Devlin, Jr. announces that they have installed a prescription drug drop off box in their lobby at the Sheriff’s Office. The Sheriff’s Office has paired up with the National Association of Drug Diversion Investigators (NADDI) who supplied the drop box at no cost. The drop box is available year round during normal business hours for residents who would like to drop off unwanted, unused or expired prescription and over-the- counter medicines. Statistics tell us that one of the main starting points for drug abuse is unused prescription drugs kept in a home. These unused medications can also cause accidental drug overdoses in children. We also recognize these medications can lead to groundwater contamination if flushed down a toilet. One of the Sheriff’s Office major initiatives has been to curb the abuse of drugs in our community, including prescription medications. These medications can act as gateway drugs to other forms of drug abuse. By providing a convenient way for these medications to be safely disposed of, we reduce the risk of children or others obtaining these medications and potentially using them in an abusive manner. The drug drop box is located in the lobby of the Sheriff’s Office, 172 Cty Hwy 33 W Cooperstown, NY. It will be available to the public year-round during normal business hours (Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.). The Sheriff’s Office cannot accept: • Liquids and ointments • Hypodermic needles or other “sharps” • Inhalers • Aerosol cans • Thermometers • Chemotherapy medications • Any bio-hazardous materials The Sheriff’s Office will accept and store the drugs, and then arrange for the safe and legal destruction.
