AUTONOMOUS VEHICLES could be the next big thing in the automo-tive sector. But is it really progress?

I have to admit that I can’t see the point in spending significant resources pursuing driverless vehicles, and particularly driverless buses and coaches. There is still so much work to be done in improving vehicle drivelines, and particularly the planetary and human health impacts that result from vehicle manufacture and use, that it is difficult to get excited about driverless technologies.

Reducing carbon emissions and tailpipe pollution delivers immediate local and long term global gains, while removing a human from behind the wheel does exactly that - it dehumanises transport and travel. A smil-ing face, or even a formal acknowledgement, adds untold value to pas-senger carrying services.

Yes, I know there are many services where you are hard pressed to get a smile or even any response from a driver, although that has never stopped me routinely saying hello when I board and thanks when alighting. But autonomy could be a slippery slope that we are best simply bypassing.

There may be some particular niche operations where fully autono-mous vehicles will be accepted, airport transfers or segregated guided busways come to mind, but these are few and far between, at least until all the human drivers have been removed from the road.

None of this should take anything away from the initiative being pur-sued by Stagecoach and ADL for a trial of an autonomous Enviro200 later this year. Since it’s not possible to take an autonomous bus out on a service route, the trial will be confined to operating around the depot.

I accept the PR value of this project in being seen to be at the leading edge of technology, but as those involved point out, the real benefit may be from the assistance (semi) autonomous systems can give to a driver from the vehicle’s plethora of cameras, radars, lasers and ultrasound sensors that help them detect, and hopefully avoid, objects in their path.

Expanded services for First Bristol’s metrobus

FIRST Bristol is expanding the m3 metrobus service to seven days a week and additional evening and night journeys from next month. A Sunday service will run half-hourly between 9am and 7pm and there will be new journeys between 9pm and 4am on Mondays to Sat-urdays between The Centre and UWE.

On weekdays an additional U3 University service will be offered

between UWE and the city cen-tre, pending a further increase in capacity between these stops when the new m1 metrobus ser-vice starts early next year.

“We are pleased to announce that we are now ready to start operating the m3 metrobus service seven days a week from the start of September,” says First Bristol man-aging director James Freeman. “We’ve always said that we would

introduce a seven-days-a-week m3 service in September once we had a better understanding of the way the route works.

“We are really delighted that already, after just two months, an impressive 120,000 passengers have already used the service, exceeding our expectations in every way and we are pleased to see signs of healthy growth.”

Traffic commissioners highlight improvements in decision timesIN their latest annual report, the traffic commissioners claim that there is evidence of progress in reducing the time for processing applica-tions with the average time for a decision in the past year reduced from over 11 weeks to just over 7 weeks.

In addition, 90.2 per cent of digital licence applica-tions were granted within seven weeks.

The report says that opera-tors who apply digitally should now benefit from time sav-ings, swifter correspondence and a application process that’s designed to make sure more complete information is provided.

Meanwhile, senior traffic commissioner Richard Turfitt, re-iterated the importance of monitoring safety standards: “The vast majority of HGV and

PSV operations are com-mitted to running safe vehi-cles and working within the rules,” the regulators state.

“A licence holder is enti-tled to assume that when they bid for work, a com-petitor will not be able to get that contract as a result of cutting corners, especially where safety is concerned.”

HCT Group pledges to convert commercial operation into social enterpriseTRANSPORT social enter-pr ise HCT Group has acquired South Yorkshire bus operator Powells Bus to continue the group’s expan-sion in the region.

HCT Group has completed its first commercial acquisi-tion, purchasing Powells Bus for an undisclosed sum. Powells Bus has around 30 vehicles and operates local bus services, school buses and private hire services in the Rotherham and Don-caster areas. Powells was founded in 1996.

“We have been work-ing in Yorkshire as CT Plus since 2004 and are look-ing to expand our opera-tions,” says Dai Powell, HCT Group chief executive. “We have been looking for three things in our first acquisi-tion. The first was a busi-

ness that was a good match for our own in terms of ser-vices operated. The second was a business where there were significant opportunities for growth. The third is argu-ably the most important – we believe that local services have a real social impact for communities and we sought out an operator that felt the same way.

“We think that this acquisi-tion is a sign of things to come for HCT Group. A social enter-prise buying a commercial operator – with a view to turn-ing it into a social enterprise – is a great way of providing public services for public benefit.”

Ian Powell, of Powells Bus, adds: “HCT Group has the resources and expertise to help take Powells Bus to the next level – pursuing new

opportunities and growing the organisation.”

And Jane Powell, says: “HCT Group really under-stands the ethos we have built here at Powells. They have a genuine track record of providing local services in the communities where they work – and, like us, they know what our ser-vices mean to the people that use them; that they are vital lifelines.”

HCT Group, which now operates more than 750 vehicles from 16 depots in London, Yorkshire, the southwest, the northwest, Derbyshire and the Chan-nel Islands, with a staff of nearly 1,600, says that no jobs are at risk at Powells since it intends to expand the business.

Stagecoach to trial autonomous Enviro200 within depotsSTAGECOACH is working with Alexander Dennis and technol-ogy company Fusion Process-ing to evaluate a single-deck autonomous bus. The 12m ADL Enviro200 vehicle is designed to be completely autonomous and able to operate without a driver in an off-road environment.

Work on the vehicle is being car-ried out at ADL’s plant in Guildford and the bus is expected to be ready for trial by the end of this year.

In the short term, the bus will be used in autonomous mode only within the depot environment, to carry out movements such as parking and moving into the fuel-ling station and bus wash. Using self-driving vehicles within depots more widely could help improve safety, efficiency and space utili-sation within the depot, according to Stagecoach.

Legal restrictions mean the vehi-cle will not be used in autonomous mode in passenger service for the foreseeable future. However, when

the bus is driven in manual mode by a human driver, the sensor sys-tem on the bus, whilst not engaged to drive the vehicle, can still be used to provide assistance by warning of cyclists or pedestrians that may be in the blind spot or arrive unex-pectedly close to the vehicle.

Stagecoach claims that autono-mous bus technology may be used more widely in the future, including on services carrying passengers, dependent on legal developments.

“Stagecoach has long been at the heart of innovation within the bus industry and this is an excit-ing trial that will deliver the UK’s first fully autonomous single deck bus,” says Stagecoach UK Bus engineering director Sam Greer. “We look forward to working with our partners on this project which we believe could, in time, help improve safety and efficiency within our depots, and over the longer term, help transform bus travel in the future.”

The Stagecoach bus will be fit-ted with the CAVstar®system pro-vided by Fusion Processing, which was utilised in the UK’s largest public trial of autonomous vehi-cles to date, in Greenwich earlier this year, and a number of other projects.

The system uses multiple sensor types, including radar, laser, cam-era and ultrasound, along with satellite navigation to detect and avoid objects, in all weathers, day and night, and plan an optimum path for the vehicle.

Ken Scott, ADL group engineer-ing director, adds: “We’re excited to be working with Stagecoach and Fusion Processing on this innova-tive project. In the first instance it will deliver real and demon-strable improvement to efficiency and safety in depots, while taking another significant step on our journey to bringing fully autono-mous vehicles to market.”

New operators association for Heartlands growth corridorBUS operators’ association formed for Oxford-MK-Cam-bridge growth corridor

Bus companies have formed a new bus operators’ association for the Oxford-Milton Keynes-Cambridge corridor and surrounding areas.

The association covers the same geography as Eng-land’s Economic Heartland, stretching from Swindon to Cambridgeshire, and from Northamptonshire to Hert-fordshire. It will have repre-sentation on the Heartland’s Strategic Transport Forum - an emerging Sub-national Transport Body – through the association’s chairman, Stagecoach’s Robin Knight.

The operators say that the move means they will have a strong voice on the plan-ning and delivery of stra-tegic infrastructure in the region, while also playing a role in England’s Economic Heartland’s work to improve transport users’ choice and journey experience.

The association comprises Stagecoach, Arriva, Oxford Bus Company, Thames Travel, Carousel Buses, City Sightseeing (Oxford), Go South Coast, Centrebus, Grant Palmer and UNO bus.

Strategic Transport Forum chair, mayor Dave Hodgson says: “I’m delighted to wel-come the association to the Strategic Transport Forum. Bus travel is a crucial mode of transport for many peo-ple in the region and has the potential to offer many oth-

ers access to work and leisure opportunities that they might not otherwise have.

“Having transport compa-nies represented at our meet-ings and feeding into our emerging Transport Strategy is fundamental to achieving our ambition for the Heartland, and I’d certainly encourage train operators in the region to consider forming an equivalent association.”

Stagecoach’s Robin Knight, chairman of the newly-formed England’s Economic Heart-land’s Bus Operator’s Asso-ciation, adds: “Being part of England’s Economic Heartland gives us a platform to ensure the voices of our customers are heard by regional leaders and government. As bus oper-

ators we move thousands of passengers on our roads every day, and so can pro-vide important insight into plans to improve connectiv-ity across the region.

“Setting up the bus opera-tors’ association is a real sign of intent that we want to play a leading role work-ing in partnership to support economic growth across the Heartland. We want to be at the forefront of improving the user experience, increasing use of public transport and improving journey times.”

There are 11 local trans-port authorities that make up England’s Economic Heart-land, with a total population of more than 5.1 million.

First electric coach order for UK from WestwayWESTWAY Coach Services is set to deploy the first electric coach in the UK with an order for two Yutong TCe12s which is likely to be available for opera-tion in London next year. The TCe12 is currently in service in Paris with Flixbus and Keolis, and the vehicle shares much of the electric driveline with Yutong’s E10 and E12 buses.

The 48-seat TCe12 has a 258kWh battery capacity and can be charged with either a 60kWh, 90kWh or 120kWh DC charger, according to UK sup-plier Pelican, enabling a full charge in less than two hours.

“We are delighted to be the first operator to choose the Yutong full electric coach,” says David West, Westway MD. “Other Chinese manu-facturers have recently announced an intention to supply electric coaches in the UK but in all cases the manufacturers and their ability to support their prod-ucts are as yet unknown.

“I have seen the Yutong in operation in Paris and look forward to being the first electric coach operator in London.”

Plymouth’s new Waterfront Shuttle.

Plymouth’s first ‘hop on, hop off’ open top bus launchesPLYMOUTH’S first open-top service bus has been launched to serve the Barbi-can and The Hoe throughout the summer. The Waterfront

Shuttle will run on the circu-lar Plymouth Citybus service 25 route to and from Royal Parade via the Barbican and The Hoe until Friday 22 Sep-

tember 2018. Commercially run by

Plymouth Citybus, but designed in conjunc-tion with the Plymouth Water front Par tner-ship, the open-top bus is branded as Britain’s Ocean City Waterfront Shuttle and allows pas-sengers to hop-on and off all day for £3 for adults and £2.30 for children.

The service will run

every half hour Monday to Saturday daytime.

“This is the first open-top service bus in Plymouth in a generation and our first ‘hop-on, hop-off’ service,” says Mark Collins, head of com-mercial & marketing, Plym-outh Citybus. “In nice weather it offers some stunning views of the landmarks along the Barbican and The Hoe from the top deck. We’re hoping having this bus in opera-tion will make the Plymouth waterfront, its businesses and activities more accessi-ble to residents and visitors to the city this summer.”

Transport for West Midlands reveals a new public transport identity

Andy Street, Roger Lawrence and Laura Shoaf with a tram and bus in their new West Midlands Transport livery.

PUBLIC transport in the West Midlands is being re-branded with West Midlands Transport deliver-ing a single identity to bus, rail and tram services in the region in what it describes as the first integrated transport system outside London.

Each mode has its own livery, red for buses, and are centred on the WMT diamond logo.

Transport for West Midlands, part of the West Midlands Com-bined Authority, has introduced the new look to spearhead the drive towards a comprehensive and inte-grated system for the region.

“Branding is not merely dress-ing, it is about more people using public transport in an easy way,” says mayor of the West Midlands Andy Street. “Think of the iconic red London bus – it is recognised the world over and the capital is rightly proud of it. This is our chance to inspire a similar sense of pride and identity for people in our

region and the transport links that connect their lives.

“For the first time we will have trains, trams, buses, and cycles with one uniting identity which is enduring and, over time, becomes something which defines the West Midlands.”

Through the West Midlands Bus Alliance, TfWM says it is working with operators on the use of the new regional branding. Buses operated in Coventry by National Express are expected to retain their sky blue livery but will carry the WMT logo.

‘Road to Zero’ strategy challenge by campaignersTHE Government’s long-awaited ‘Road to Zero’ strategy on reducing emissions from vehicles is head-ing in the right direction, but at the wrong speed, according to the Urban Transport Group.

The group criticises the failure to bring forward the date for the end of the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles, currently set at 2040, and has pointed out that the strategy relies on a voluntary agreement with the HGV industry to reduce emissions.

“We need to act far sooner than 2040 to ban conventional vehicles if we are to improve air quality within our cities,” says Jon Lamonte, chief

executive, Transport for Greater Manchester and Urban Transport Group lead Board member for air quality.

“The lack of incentives to dis-courage people from using con-ventional cars – particularly diesel vehicles – will also make it more difficult to reduce emissions.

“Government must go further and faster if we are to reach our desired destination of clean road transport.”

Campaign for Better Transport also describes the plan as “dis-appointing” and echoes UTG’s comments on the weakness of the voluntary nature of the HGV emis-sion reduction plan.

Bridget Fox, sustainable trans-port campaigner, Campaign for Better Transport, adds: “While the commitment to invest in and promote electric charging points is welcome, overall the strategy fails to match the urgency of the situation.

“This means another generation will pass before we have real action on cutting harmful CO2 emissions and cleaning up deadly vehicle pollution.

“Interim 2030 targets for zero emission cars and vans are a small step forward, but not good enough.”

Opportunity-charged Volvo electric buses arrive in Harrogate

Volvo7900e launched in Harrogate.

TRANSDEV Blazefield has unveiled its new full-electric buses for Harrogate which it says will transform it into ‘Britain’s first low emission bus town’.

Transdev has invested £1.7million in eight new Volvo 7900e single-deck buses, together with £2.25million of funding from the Govern-ment’s Low Emission Bus Scheme. The vehicles are now being prepared by Har-rogate Bus Company to start services this month.

The new Volvos represents the first commercial applica-tion of opportunity charging which has been pioneered by Volvo and other manufac-turers in Europe but to date has not been used in the UK.

“It’s the technology which powers these new buses – using ‘opportunity charging’

via masts on three departure stands in Harrogate bus sta-tion – which really sets these buses apart from anything seen before in this country,” says Alex Hornby, Trans-dev Blazefield CEO. “We’re immensely proud to be first in the UK to introduce these amazing new buses and in the process, achieve our vision of creating Britain’s first Low Emission Bus Town right here in Harrogate.”

The operator is working with Harrogate borough council and North Yorkshire county council and Northern Power-grid to install the infrastructure for the new buses. Charging masts are in place above three departure stands in Harrogate bus station, each fitted with a transformer which converts uprated power at 1,600v AC into a 600v DC supply, deliv-

ered via a pantograph on the roof of the bus.

In addition, each bus will receive an overnight charge at the depot every two days to maintain peak performance, according to Transdev.

“Each bus will receive a rapid power charge at the bus station as customers board the vehicle, providing enough power from a seven minute charge to complete 35 miles,” adds Hornby, “which is ample to support the three routes on Harro-gate’s urban bus network where these buses will run.

“The infrastructure pro-viders will go live with the uprated power supply in mid-August, at which time we’ll introduce these superb new vehicles to Harrogate.”

BYD is to deliver 42 articu-lated electric buses to Norway’s capital, Oslo. Orders have been placed by Nobina, the first Euro-pean operator to put Chinese-produced BYD 18m ebuses into operation, for a total of 42 units of the BYD 18m. BYD has had two artics running in Oslo since last year December which are Norway’s first electric artics.

The 42 ebuses will have pan-tograph charging and are sched-uled for delivery in the second quarter of 2019 for routes in the east of the city, replacing a cur-rent fleet of diesel vehicles.

“Over the next ten years Oslo

Norway

is planning to run a zero emission public transport system and we, together with BYD, are making a big contribution to make this plan come true,” says Jan Volsdal, man-aging director, Nobina. “We have good experiences with the two BYD artics that have been running in Oslo for half a year, including the challenging winter months, and we have confidence that the new fleet’s performance will meet our expectations.”

Isbrand Ho, managing director, BYD Europe, adds: “We are very

delighted that Nobina has chosen BYD again to run their routes in Oslo and to demonstrate the effectiveness of BYD’s 18m artics in delivering an intensive, high capacity service. We offer vari-ous charging solutions, such as pantograph charging, to our customers to meet their require-ments on operational mileages.”

Nobina has also ordered 24 BYD 12m ebuses for the prov-ince of Södermanland on the south eastern coast of Sweden.www.byd.com

Toronto to take BYD 40ft electric busesBYD has signed a deal to deliver ten 40-foot, full-electric buses, with an option for an addi-tional 30 buses to the Toronto Transit Commission, Canada’s

largest transit operator and the third largest transit operator in North America. BYD Canada vice president, Ted Dowling, says: “We applaud the decision of TTC to purchase these buses as part of their goal to be a zero-emis-sion f leet by 2040. TTC is lead-ing Canadian transit agencies to a brighter, cleaner future. These first ten buses alone will mean a

carbon reduction of 700 metric tons every year.”

TTC’s purchase is BYD Can-ada’s seventh electric bus order in the last two years. Last month BYD Canada delivered four buses to St Albert Transit and two to Grande Prairie Transit, near Edmonton.www.byd.com

Tall Ships Sunderland backed by Go North EastGO North East supported the Tall Ships Races 2018 which attracted a total of 1.2 million visitors with dedicated bus services involving 54 vehicles and 175 staff providing park-and-ride and shuttle buses alongside services on its Wearside routes.

A fleet of 55 tall ship vessels was welcomed into Sunderland Port for the Tall Ships Races 2018, where they sailed around the River Wear before embarking on the first leg of their spectacular race. They will be travelling over 300 miles to Esbjerg in Denmark, before calling at the city of Stavanger in Norway, fin-ishing in Harlingen in the Neth-erlands. In total, they will cover more than 1,000 nautical miles over three weeks.

“This was a big event in Wear-side’s calendar and our team all pulled together to make sure visi-tors could get there with ease,” says Barry Perryman, assistant service performance manager, Go North East. “Huge crowds turned out and thanks to the positivity, comradery and team spirit we had overwhelm-ingly positive feedback from visi-tors. Everyone did a brilliant job.”

John Kelly, portfolio holder for communities and culture, Sun-derland City Council adds: “We are delighted with the success of The Tall Ships Races, which show-cased Sunderland at its best. It wouldn’t have been possible with-out the support of a huge number of individuals and organisations, all working together.

“An efficient public transport network is vital to the smooth run-ning of all of our major events, and the additional support provided by Go North East for The Tall Ships Races, in the form of extra buses, staff and management of the park and ride service, was greatly appreciated.”

Sixth formers design marketing campaign for First West YorkshireFIRST West Yorkshire worked with students from Parkside School in Cullingworth and Hanson Academy in Bradford to design a marketing campaign to encourage more teenagers to travel by bus.

First West Yorkshire partnered with local social enterprise Ahead Partnership to deliver a challenge to get students thinking about how to encourage more young people to use public transport. Sixth form students were asked to pre-sent a marketing campaign which promotes the benefits of using bus services in a way that would appeal to transport users aged under 19 years old.

The competitions are part of the FutureJobs programme, backed by Leeds City Region LEP and the European Social Fund.

Students attended an interactive

competition in each school, taking part in workshops based around perceptions of bus travel, market-ing channels and the chance to review previous travel marketing campaigns. They then had time to work on their ideas before pre-senting them to a panel of First West Yorkshire representatives in a school final.

The finalists pitched their ideas at Bradford City Hall on 4 July to a ‘Dragon’s Den’ style panel of judges

made up of councillor Sue Duffy, Oliver Howarth, First West York-shire and Sharon Presley, West Yorkshire Combined Authority, who chose the ‘Bus Winners’ cam-paign from Parkside School.

The winning student campaign will be piloted by First West York-shire using social media this sum-mer and the winning students received £100 in shopping vouch-ers.

Poems launched on Go North East buses as part of the Great Exhibition of the NorthPOEMS based on Newcastle Uni-versity research into ‘getting out’ and well-being in later life have been launched on 100 Go North East buses as part of the Great Exhibition of the North. The poems are penned by Newcastle-based poet Anna Woodford, who is writer in residence at the Co-

Motion project at the Universities of Newcastle and York, a three-year study looking at the link between mobility and well-being of 96 older people in Northumber-land, York and Leeds.

The study found that people’s attitudes to their mobility was a key factor in determining their well-being. Researchers also found that the wider attitudes and behav-iour of the public greatly impact on the mobility of older people in the area.

“The poems are about encour-aging people to be kinder to their fellow travellers,” says Woodford. “I’m thrilled to have them on local buses and in my new book Chang-ing Room which is available in the Baltic shop as part of the Great Exhibition of the North.

“It is great for poetry to be out and about and hopefully the poems will encourage people to think about the person sitting next to them and the difference a kind word or action can make to their day.”

Stephen King, commercial director, Go North East adds: “Inclusivity is extremely high on our agenda, with all our driv-ers trained on how best to ensure our 175,000 daily passengers feel comfortable, safe and happy on the bus. Anna’s poetry reinforces our commitment to ‘ journeys taken care of ’ and we hope the influx of new and existing passengers using our buses during the Great Exhibi-tion of the North, enjoy the read.”

Success for Galloway’s driver academySUFFOLK-BASED coach operator Galloway Coach Travel has intro-duced five new drivers who suc-cessfully completed their training and passed their PCV licence tests last month. All five will now be regularly driving local buses and National Express coaches across the company’s routes.

Galloway has been training the next generation of bus and coach drivers for many years but this is the first time five have passed within days of each other.

“We recognised the industry is facing a shortage of qualified PCV drivers, there simply aren’t enough to go around, so we regu-larly recruit potential new drivers into our academy and are very proud of the five who have recently passed,” says Marc Button, Gallo-

way staff manager. “It is a career for life. These drivers can progress their professional driving careers with us and I look forward to sup-porting them as they take on new routes, potentially even driving across Europe on school or coach holidays.”

Dan Rogers, Galloway general manager, adds: “We continue to invest in our drivers and value their expertise in delivering excellent customer service. Having taken the test myself, I understand the com-mitment these individuals have shown to get this far. I hope they are rightly proud of their achievements

and look forward to watching their careers develop with us.”

The five recruits - Anthony Dea-bill, Andrew Bailey, Dan Challis, Elizabeth Phillips and Suzie Sands - come from all walks of life. Two have previous driving experience, the others include a horse trainer, event worker and a fast-food res-taurant manager.

Michelin agreement extended by LothianLOTHIAN will continue to use Michelin tyres after the largest municipal bus company in the UK renewed a three-year Effitres con-tract with Michelin solutions.

The new agreement will see Michelin supply, fit and manage tyres across Lothian’s fleet of more than 800 single- and double-deck

buses, which serve Edinburgh and the surrounding areas of Midlo-thian and East Lothian.

Michelin Solutions will support the f leet with a team of its own tyre technicians working in-house at Lothian’s three bus garages. Together, they are responsible for fitting Michelin tyres onto rims, as

well as conducting detailed fleet-wide tyre inspections to optimise replacement intervals and both spot and rectify potential issues before they result in downtime.

Michelin solutions will manage all Michelin tyres through a multi-life process including regrooving and retreading. This supports Lothian’s own environmental tar-gets by extracting the maximum performance from every tyre on its f leet, in turn reducing raw mate-rial usage.

“Lothian is a very progressive fleet and they know precisely what they want from a strategic sup-plier,” says Stewart Pooley, sales manager bus & coach, Michelin solutions. “Everything we do for them is geared around maximising safety and guaranteeing mobility.” www.michelin-solutions.co.ukThree-year Michelin agreement for Lothian.

Multi-currency ETMs from TicketerTICKETER has processed its first contactless euro and sterling transaction for First Aircoach in Dublin. The new multi-currency electronic ticket machines (ETMs) were installed two months ago for the two million passengers travel-ling between Dublin city, Belfast and Dublin airport each year.

Four of the services are based in the Republic of Ireland and only use the Euro, but one crosses the border between Belfast city centre and Dublin Airport, so Ticketer had to tailor the solution for the ETMs to accept payments in both euros and sterling.

The ETMs accept all types of payments, with contactless f lexi-bility offered through the payment service provider Littlepay.

“The team at Ticketer have come up with a solution that fits our cross-border operation perfectly and our customers are seeing the benefits with over 6,000 contact-less transactions taking place within two weeks of launching,” says Dervla Mc Kay, managing director, First Aircoach.

“At Aircoach, we are committed to providing our customers with high quality public transport ser-vices and the launch of contactless further delivers on this commit-ment.”

First Aircoach is the first cus-tomer that Ticketer has enabled euro payments for, and the ETMs will switch between currencies as required, showing the ticket price in both. It was a necessity for First Aircoach because journeys can start or end on either side of the border.

As wel l as the on board ETMs, Ticketer is also supplying machines for the travel shop in Belfast and mobile retailers based at Dublin airport.www.ticketer.co.uk

Scheduler training from OmnibusTRAINING within the industry is a key concern, according to Omni-bus , to ensure the next generation of schedulers and planners come forward. Omnibus has acquired TransACT, which includes a man-ual scheduling course from Jim Hulme.

The first course was recently held by Omnibus and delegates described it as ‘a very detailed first look into scheduling’ and ‘a strong introduction to an area where the learning never ends’.

The course recognises that in order to get the most out of any scheduling software, employees need to understand the principles of scheduling, to understand the data that they are inputting and what they expect to see as a result. The course has been developed to cover manual bus and crew scheduling, without the need for delegates to have any previous knowledge of Omnibus software products.

“It is just not possible to cre-ate viable and efficient timetables, drivers’ duties or rosters without an understanding of basic sched-uling principles,” says Omnibus MD Peter Crichton. “They are the cornerstone of being able to make

sound commercial decisions on service changes.

“We are committed to continu-ing the excellent courses and ser-vices that TransACT offered, as we bring all the training into the Omnibus portfolio of products and services.”

The first delegates on the man-ual scheduling course agreed that it encouraged ‘improved human input’ to assist any computer soft-ware to produce better results, particularly for anyone with lim-ited or no previous knowledge of bus scheduling.

“You simply wouldn’t give someone accounting software and expect them to come up with a set of accounts, and the same applies to scheduling,” adds Crichton. “You need to understand the data that you are inputting and why. The quality of the results depends entirely on the data that is being entered so in untrained hands the results are meaningless.

“The aim of this new manual scheduling course is to place these tools in trained hands and at the same time invest in training the schedulers of the future.”www.omnibus.uk.com

focus on UNIFORMS

Making employees proud to wear the uniformHAVING created uniforms for Eurostar, Arriva and First Group, Jermyn Street Design says it knows not only how to design a uniform that employees are proud to wear, but also what works in the challenging passenger transport sector.

It claims that creating a uniform that employees want to wear instils a sense of pride and loyalty to the brand.

“Uniforms for bus drivers have two unique chal-lenges,” says JSD sales director Ann Dowdeswell. “Firstly, drivers sit for most of their working day, and secondly they are exposed to the elements every time the doors open. The uniform therefore needs to be not only comfortable to wear but also

work in changing temperatures and throughout the year as the seasons change.”

Tachographs

Smart tachos coming of age

30 August 2018

A new range of smart tachographs is about to be launched in line with new EU legislation.Steve Banner reports

continued page 32 ➜

TACHOGRAPHS are about to undergo major changes that should make it easier for them to resist fraudulent tampering. The administrative burden their use imposes on operators should be reduced too.

However it may be some time before these developments begin to have an impact on the majority of coach and - where relevant - bus operators.

While the next generation of digital so-called smart tachographs will have to be installed in all newly-registered in-scope vehicles from 15 June 2019 onwards, there is no retrofitting requirement. As a consequence, older digital tachographs are likely to be around for some time to come given how long so many coaches remain in service, cascading down through a succession of owners.

The new-generation tachograph is coming about as a consequence to changes in European Union legislation - Annex 1C (EU 2016/799) - which were introduced in June 2016.

Any idea that this will become irrelevant when Britain leaves the EU next March should be dismissed. Even if it were to be abandoned so far as domestic work is concerned - which seems unlikely - it would still apply to coaches travelling from the UK to an EU country.

If a coach is fitted with a smart tachograph then enforcement agents standing at the roadside and armed with the necessary communication equipment - a secure short-range radio device - will be able to detect irregularities as it goes by, says tachograph manufacturer Continental Automotive.

A driver may have failed to insert his or her digital card for instance or the tachograph may have malfunctioned.

“It will be more important than ever that transport operators ensure that their drivers are properly trained to operate tachographs correctly and compliantly, and that there are robust policies and processes in place to manage and record tachograph data,” says Derek Broomfield, chairman of transport training and compliance expert Novadata. “We also recommend that holders of a management CPC qualification undertake some refresher training, and restricted operator licence

Tachographs

holders attend an operator licence awareness course before this legislation comes into force, as this will represent a significant shift in detection practice and the policing of transport compliance. Of course, vehicles with older tachographs may still be subject to roadside inspections, so the correct use of all tachographs will still be of paramount importance.

“Smart tachographs may take some getting used to at first, but ultimately, this level of transparency and compliance will make our industry more compliant and our roads safer for everyone.”

Continental's smart DTCO 4.0 tachograph transmits information to the device through a small antenna attached to the vehicle's windscreen. Rather than install the technology required for DSRC - Dedicated Short Range Communications - in the antenna as is usual, Continental's engineers have integrated it into the tachograph itself.

Any infringement that pops up will be contained in a small packet of data. Think of it as a flag indicating that something may be amiss, suggests rival tachograph maker Stoneridge, which will be introducing its own smart unit.

Only a small amount of data can be extracted because the detection device may only have a range of 50m and the vehicle could be travelling at 90kph, points out Continental vice president of segment tachographs, telematics, and services Dr Lutz Scholten. As a consequence there isn't the time to obtain more data.

If no issues are found then the coach will be able to continue on its way unimpeded. If the agents detect something is amiss however then they can contact their colleagues a few miles down the road so that they can pull the vehicle over for further investigation.

From the viewpoint of both the operator and the enforcement authorities it means that less time should be wasted on unnecessary roadside checks. Fewer checks should be needed anyway of course as the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency's Earned Recognition scheme gains traction.

It should be stressed that the tachograph can

only transmit certain types of information. Ever-tighter privacy legislation means that it will not be able to disclose personal details such as the driver's name and address.

Recognising that it will be some time before smart tachographs become widespread, the EU is allowing the authorities plenty of time to acquire the roadside detection kit they need. "They've got 15 years," Scholten remarks.

A new-generation tachograph will be equipped with a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) module which will automatically record the vehicle's location at the start and finish of each journey says Stoneridge, with position updates every three hours. Drivers will no longer need to adjust or set the time in the tachograph as this will be done automatically too.

"We've updated our website with useful information on how this new legislation will affect our fleet and workshop customers," says Stoneridge tachograph systems product management director, Mikael Johansson. "We will make sure that appropriate training material is available in our website's support and training sections," adds marketing executive Olga Goryntseva.

So far as tampering is concerned, an area that has had to be addressed is the link between the tachograph and the speed sensor. Continental has developed the KITAS 4.0 sensor with this in mind and with tighter security as a priority.

"Bear in mind that the level of encryption used in current tachographs dates back to 1997," Scholten remarks. From now on however there will be a lot more stress on keeping encryption levels regularly updated, he adds.

A smart tachograph will be capable of transmitting and receiving a variety of other data securely thanks to its new encryption protocols.

In some countries this could enable the vehicle to talk to the road tolling system without the need to fit other devices. This could include the transmission of weight data from axle-mounted sensors to make toll charges more equitable, Continental suggests.

Complete Compliance Control

For peace of mind and complete compliance control of your fleet, call us today! 024 7669 [email protected] www.trutac.co.uk

We use CPT Tacho Analysis, CPT Daily Checks and TruLicence. TruTac’s remote downloading solution delivers all vehicle and driver information direct from the tachograph. In just 3 months we have seen a 50% reduction in driver infringements and an overall increase in compliance control.Bryan Maddern. Transport Manager, Daish’s Holidays.

We are talking50% Fewer Driver Infringements!

Smartphone apps could use data from DTCO 4.0 to guide drivers to an empty parking space at a suitable stopping place or to the nearest fuel station, Continental says. Information from the unit could also be used to help work out insurance rates, it adds.

"Telematics data streams can be compared to uncut diamonds," muses Scholten.

"They have great potential but in many cases they simply aren't available in a form on which you can build business relationships because they are not sufficiently trustworthy and authenticated.

"However the tachograph is now becoming a comprehensive, authenticated data source for all telematics processes," he contends. "It brings new opportunities for fleets, and for their service providers."

DTCO 4.0 will get its official launch at this year's IAA Hanover Commercial Vehicles Show in Germany in September.

Stoneridge makes the point that – as with the current generation of digital tachographs - data from smart tachographs will still have to be downloaded, stored and analysed. Drivers Hours legislation and the Working Time Directive will remain in force.

Smart tachographs will also record new types of information, including GNSS data and data relating

to certain events and faults. All this will require downloading at regular intervals too.

Coach companies that acquire vehicles with smart tachographs will have to check that their download tools can either receive the new information or be easily upgraded to enable them to do so.

It is a point made strongly by Chris Cuffe, sales and marketing manager at Tachosys, which offers a range of download tools. Stoneridge markets them all over Europe and they are handled by a number of other resellers, including Novadata, TruTac, Road Tech and Tachodisc.

All of the Tachosys handheld download tools are capable of being upgraded automatically through the associated digiconnect desktop application, says Cuffe. The digipostpro depot-based data collection terminal can be upgraded too he says, as can the digiDL remote tachograph download tool.

"Operators buying tachograph tools and other download solutions should ensure they are upgradeable via the internet in the same way that ours are," he says; otherwise they will not have the capabilities a smart tachograph requires.

Stoneridge is updating its web-based OPTAC3 tachograph analysis system to accommodate smart

tachgraph data. Existing driver cards can be used in the new

smart tachographs.Continental has adapted its download tools,

its VDO TIS-Web tacho analysis package, its test equipment and its workshop training courses in line with DTCO 4.0's requirements.

No matter whether it is digital or analogue, as indicated earlier, the data a tachograph generates need analysing. Ideally that should be through the use of a dedicated bus and coach analysis package rather than one designed primarily for hauliers that has been tweaked.

There are important differences between the two sectors, TruTac points out, especially when it comes to European work. Transport companies that send trucks across the Channel tend not to double staff them in the way coach operators do and the latter may have to take the 12-day rule into account.

Coach firms may also need attestation reports. Hauliers do not.

TruTac continues to work closely with the Confederation of Passenger Transport. As a consequence it has developed CPT Tacho Analysis.

Taking into account the Working Time Directive as well as EU and domestic Drivers Hours legislation, it offers web-based digital and analogue tachograph analysis.

Users include Daish's Holidays which has enjoyed a 50 per cent drop in driver infringements since it introduced it at the start of this year. Operating 23 coaches, the business employs two other products developed by TruTac as well, CPT Daily Checks and TruLicence.

The former enables drivers to carry out daily walk-around checks using an app on a smartphone or tablet. The latter allows a company to check the licences of its drivers to ensure they are still valid.

Daish’s transport manager Bryan Maddern is clearly pleased with the packages the company is now using, pointing out that it now has all the key information it requires at its fingertips.

"The Daily Checks app keeps us informed right away of any repairs that are required or any other vehicle-related issues which need attention," he says. "It's a massive improvement."

Road Tech’s Tachomaster can be used on a standalone basis or integrated into an operator’s systems which means that a traffic planner can see the status of the driver’s licence, and whether a daily walk-around check/damage report has been done or not and it is also possible to have a data feed from its Falcon Tracking system or, a third party tracking system.

“By integrating a customer’s tracking system, planners are able to see exactly, down to street level, where a driver was when an event or infringement occurred,” says a Road Tech spokesperson. “There is no need for a traffic planners to spend time viewing multiple screens or, dipping in and out of different systems to get a complete real-time view of your two most expensive assets, your vehicles and your drivers.”

DCRS, Driver Compliance Reporting System, has also now been added to Tachomaster free of charge and Working Time Directive analysis and a free Driver App are also included.

With the release of the DVSA standard for its Earned Recognition Scheme, there is now a new Tachomaster module available which allows the software to query its customer’s data against the benchmark. This means that Tachomaster customers can assess their overall company, sites and driver performance, without the need to send the data to DVSA, until they feel they are ready. The Earned Recognition Scheme module is available on a twelve-week free trial.

Four Volvo B8R SB3s for Reays Coaches

CUMBRIAN operator Reays Coaches has returned to Volvo and taken delivery of four new Volvo B8R SB3s.

“We have heard some great things about the B8R, so when we needed four new coaches for our expanding new school contracts, we decided to turn to Volvo, which offers vehicles that have served us well in the past,” says Chris Reay, man-aging director, Reays Coaches. “From our under-standing of its fuel consumption and reliability, the Volvo B8R is the perfect solution for us. We also needed a vehicle that would be robust due to the high footfall the vehicles will see on a day to day basis.

“Besides daily school contracts, the 72-seat

capacity allows us to take two classrooms per vehicle making this an affordable choice for head teachers when planning school outings.”

Volvo points out that the B8R SB3 suits school contract work with two-plus-three seating con-figuration and three-point seatbelts.

Chris Reay adds that it has also ordered a fur-ther two 72-seat capacity Volvo coaches for deliv-ery in September.

Reays Coaches provides dedicated coaches for school operations, home-to-school transport and day trips, as well as offering full packages for adventure or skiing holidays both in the UK and Europe.www.volvobus.com

Panther pair and follow-up order from Horseman

HORSEMAN Coaches has taken delivery of two Plaxton Leopards and placed an order for 10 Pan-ther Executive coaches that will be delivered dur-ing November and December this year.

These latest introductions and new orders rep-resent a further £3million of investment by the Berkshire-based family business ahead of the introduction of the Ultra Low Emission Zone in London in April 2019.

“These latest vehicles form part of our consist-ent, ongoing programme of investment in f leet improvements and underpin our determination to stay at the forefront of the sector,” says director James Horseman. “We have a successful partner-ship with Plaxton that goes back many years, hav-ing bought well over 30 vehicles from them in the past six years alone, including Cheetah, Leopard, Elite and Panther models.

“Our new Leopards are 12.2m, 70-seat, B8R Euro6 models with Volvo DK8 engines and I-Shift transmission, while our Panthers will be 12.8m 53-seat luxury executive coaches, complete with parallel lift lockers, kitchenette/servery, fridge, toilets, sophisticated entertainment and eight-camera CCTV systems. They too will be powered by DK8 engines and I-Shift transmissions, and will benefit from real-time tracking and telemat-ics.

“The Leopard-Panther combination is ideal for our business, enabling us to offer a wide variety of options for private hires, corporate work, school contracts, special events, day trips, tours, airport transfer services for Heathrow, Luton, Stanstead and Gatwick, and holiday packages in continental Europe.”www.alexander-dennis.com

Second high-spec Enviro400 for Hams TravelHAMS Travel, based in Flimwell, Tunbridge Wells, has taken delivery of a second high-specifi-cation Enviro400 from Alexander Dennis Limited following the introduction of a similar vehicle 12 months ago.

In common with its predecessor, the latest 11.5m 85-seat double-deck has LED interior light-ing, CCTV, DVD, PA and radio systems, under-seat lighting, seatbelts and wood-effect flooring.

“We are delighted to be adding another Enviro400 to our f leet of 20-plus vehicles,”says Paul Ham, managing director of the family-run business. “It has real street presence and is ideal for a whole raft of jobs, ranging from private hire to contract work, day trips and special events such as weddings. It definitely endorses the growing trend towards premium vehicles and the increased expectations of today’s passengers.

“Our aim is to give passengers the best possible experience and the Enviro400 provides exactly that, combining a real quality finish with high capacity, factors that maximise opportunities for both operators and clients. It also projects the right image of our company, which is another important factor when it comes to winning repeat and new business.”

Mark Taylor, ADL regional retail sales man-ager for London and the south east adds: “The Enviro400 is class-leading in terms of style, capacity and comfort. As Paul Ham has indi-cated, expectations are simply higher today, hence the reason his business and others like Go Goodwins, Swans, Westway, Tappins and New-bury & District, have all gone down a similar route.” www.alexander-dennis.com

New Lanark Mills offers new refreshment option

New Lanark Mills World Heritage Site, the 18th century Scottish cotton spinning mill village set alongside the River Clyde, has introduced a new refreshment option giving

groups the opportunity to eat, drink and enjoy a World Heritage Site.

‘Meal Stop - New Lanark Mills’ has been designed to appeal to group travel organisers, coach operators and tour planners on a tight schedule by offering an alternative to the motorway or other refreshment and meal stop-offs.

Pre-booked groups will be able to choose from an ‘Express’ one-hour meal option, a longer 90-minute option, or a more leisurely visit. The options compliment New Lanark Mills’ existing catering options for groups visiting for a day or a half-day.

The new ‘Meal Stop’ options can be taken in the Mill One restaurant at the 4-star New Lanark Mill Hotel, or in the Mill Café, depending on specific requirements.

“While ideally we would like more groups to come and spend a day or a half day with us, we recognise that many tour itineraries simply don’t have the time to spare,” says Lynne Cooper, group travel trade manager. “Our ‘Meal Stop - New Lanark Mills’ offers a convenient way for groups to come

New Lanark Mills.

and have lunch or afternoon tea, and see a little of what makes New Lanark Mills World Heritage Site such a special place. We’re only 20 minutes from the main M74 motorway, going north or south, so we’re inviting coach operators travelling between England and Scotland to consider us as a rather special and memorable alternative to the usual meal stops.”

Joe the Quilter’s cottage opens at Beamish Museum

Beamish, The Living Museum of the North has opened Joe the Quilter’s cottage as the first building in the museum’s £18million Remaking Beamish project. The newly-opened

cottage is a recreation of the home of renowned Georgian quilter Joseph Hedley, who was murdered in 1826, in a crime that shocked the nation.

The cottage features stones from Joe’s original home, after the remains of the building in Warden, near Hexham, Northumberland, were uncovered during an archaeological dig by Beamish staff and community members.

The exhibit, which tells the story of quilting and the growth of cottage industries in the early 1800s, has been recreated by skilled museum staff. A drawing on a postcard that was produced after Joe’s murder gave details about how his home looked before it was later demolished in 1872. A crack in the front wall of the original cottage, clearly visible in the 1820s drawing, has even been reproduced.

“After years of planning we have finally opened the first of many new exhibits that are part of Remaking Beamish, a major £18million development that is currently underway at the museum,” says Richard Evans, Beamish director. “This beautifully-crafted, heather-thatched cottage gives us a rare chance to understand what everyday life was like in the North East during the early part of the 19th century.

“The quality of this latest addition to Beamish is outstanding – the result of many years of research, painstaking craftsmanship and the involvement of local community groups and schools. It is a real credit to the dedication and talent of our staff and volunteers, who have created this fascinating new experience for our visitors.”

Groups can explore Joe the Quilter’s cottage during a visit to Beamish Museum and the site offers free coach parking and free admission for coach drivers and group organisers (minimum 15+ paying visitors).

Wine Garden of England Festival at Rochester Cathedral

Rochester Cathedral is to host The Wine Garden of England Festival in November to celebrate Kent’s wine producers and to honour one of the county’s very first producers – a monk

who championed viticulture at the cathedral more than 1,000 years ago.

The event is organised by the Dean and Chapter of Rochester and the newly-formed Wine Garden of England partnership, and will take place in the cathedral crypt on Saturday 17 November.

The ticketed event will be the first public outing for the Kentish wine partnership, with the producing wineries offering tutored tastings and talks about their wines in sessions throughout the day.

There will be three, two-hour sessions on the day, and attendees will receive their own branded wine glass and have the chance to meet the producers and sample 30 wines. Tickets for one two-hour session will cost £50. Spaces are limited, and tickets go on public sale during the first week of September.

“We are delighted that our first public event will

be one celebrating the unique story of Rochester Cathedral’s history of wine making,” says Charles Simpson, Simpsons Wine Estate. “Not only are we giving people the chance to learn more about Kent’s outstanding range of wines, from the people who make them, but we can also raise a glass to Kent’s incredible wine heritage, stretching back more than 1,000 years.”

The event will be held in memory of Gundulf, bishop of Rochester from 1077 to 1108. Gundulf was a monk who came to England following the Norman Conquest and is renowned for building several castles and cathedrals, including those at Rochester. He was also Kent’s first known wine producer, overseeing the care of the vineyards in the grounds of the Priory and the production of wine for the monks.

The Wine Garden of England is made up of seven Kent wine producers: Biddenden, Chapel Down, Domaine Evremond, Gusbourne, Hush Heath Estate, Simpsons Wine Estate and Squerreys.

T he f irst National Tour Guiding Conference will take place on 9 November 2018 in Drapers Hall, in the City of London. The conference aims to support the development

of the tour-guiding sector across England, by sharing best practice, research and insights, innovations and enabling tour guides to network.

“Our f irst national conference will bring together tour guides, businesses and individuals working in the tour guiding sector to share innovation, knowledge and best practice, supporting them to evolve guiding products that will specifically appeal to this target market.”

The National Tour Guiding Conference is also dedicated to providing tour guides with tips for making their tours ‘bookable’ and accessible to international audiences, as well as facilitating a myriad of networking opportunities for all types of tour guide – from Blue, Green and White Badge guides, to ancestral guides, driver
