2013 junior national hereford expo daily news — tuesday JrHereford.org DRIVE magazine is a youth livesock publication that launched in 2010. It covers four species; cattle, sheep, swine and goats. It’s content is youth based. DRIVE representative, Taylor Walker said, “We focus on youth to keep them involved and interested in the industry.” Another avenue used to “drive the passion” of our industry’s youth is social media outlets. In using tools like Facebook, Twitter and Instagam, DRIVE staff are bulding the future advocates for agriculture. This week, DRIVE will be assisting with the mentor program. There are more than 60 members participating who will learn how to and when to use social media and understand their audiences. The participants will be split into five different groups. Each group has a specific topic area and will be focusing their social media posts and educational video on those topics. These five topics include: advocacy, Hereford lifestyle, Hereford beef, advertising and marketing and production. DRIVE the Passion The National Junior Hereford Association (NJHA) would like to welcome Luke Bolin to the team as our 2013 summer intern. Luke hails from Harrison, Ark., and is a senior at the University of Arkansas, majoring in agricultural communications. Luke and his family raise and show Shorthorn cattle, and he is very active in the American Junior Shorthorn Association, serving on its junior board of directors as well as serving a term as president of the Arkansas Junior Shorthorn Association. Luke also has some experience in the Hereford breed. He was a part of our 2012 JNHE ambassador team, helping coordinate show office activities as the operations assistant ambassador. Luke manages the JNHE ambassador team and helps the National Junior Hereford Association (NJHA) board with the organization of the contests and events. He also worked closely with the entry process and assist with marketing, social media and communications to the exhibitors, state advisors and all JNHE attendees. What are you looking forward to the most with the internship? Getting to experience the Hereford breed and all of the juniors and a chance to play a part in the behind- the-scenes work that goes into the production of the JNHE. Did your time as an ambassador last summer influence you to apply? Absolutely! Last summer was a blast and the ambassador program was such a great experience. What is the best piece of advice your parents/mentor ever gave you? Never let a bad day be enough to talk you into giving up. The National Junior Hereford Association (NJHA) would like to welcome Luke Bolin to the team as our 2013 summer intern. Luke hails from Harrison, Ark., and is a senior at the University of Arkansas, majoring in agricultural communications.

Things to Do in KC

Taryn Adcock is the 18-year-old daughter of Jim and Jan Adcock of Assumption, Ill. Taryn will be a sophomore at Illinois College, majoring in business and economics with a marketing minor. Having been an NJHA member for 11 years and the current president of the Illinois Junior Hereford Association, Taryn believes in the opportunities that the NJHA provides to its members. If elected to the NJHA board of directors she would encourage juniors to jump in and take advantage of every opportunity, especially PRIDE. Taryn knows that her goal of obtaining a maroon jacket would just be the beginning.

Bridget Beran of Claflin,Kan.,isthe19-year-old daughter of Craig andMichelleBeran.AsophomoreatKansasStateUniversity, Bridget is majoring in journalism and mass communications. Upon completing her degree, Bridget hopes to work for an agriculture-based publication, advocating the cattle industry and Hereford breed. Bridget is a memberoftheKansasJuniorHereford Association, past state Hereford queen and was the 2nd runner up in the national queen contest. If elected to the board she would like to encourage leadership and involvement outside of the showring, and help juniors build relationships with others from across the country.

Amanda Bacon of Siloam Springs,Ark.,isthe19-yearold daughter of Craig and Debbie Bacon. A sophomore atOklahomaStateUniversitymajoring in agricultural communications and animal science, Amanda hopes to pursue a law degree in the agricultural law program at the University of Arkansas. Amanda served as the 2012 National Hereford Queen, and is president of the Arkansas Junior Hereford Association. “Being able to give back and be a leader of the NJHA has always been a goal of mine,” says Amanda. Giving back to the association that has given so much to her is a goal that Amanda has if elected to the NJHA board.

Aleesha Howe is the 18-year-old daughter of Doug and Jenny Howe of Wagontown, Pa. She and her family own and operate Deana Jak Farms, a cow-calf operation, where they run90registeredcows,70recipient cows on 200 acres of land. Aleesha has been extremely involved in the Pennsylvania Junior Hereford Association and is currently serving on the executive planning committee for the 2014 Junior National Hereford Expo, which will be hosted in Pennsylvania. Aleesha’s future plans include working in the livestock photography industry and she hopes to bring NJHA awareness through technological advances in social media, such as implementing an NJHA application for smart phones that would expand communication efforts.
