Ewing AutomotiveSnellville, Georgia, is the home to

Ewing Automotive. With a primaryfocus on general maintenance, Ewingspecializes in engines, transmissions anddifferentials. They also take on the addi-tional duties of foreign and domestichigh performance work and restorationof classic cars and trucks.

Ewing Automotive was founded inthe back yard garage of co-owner, BillyEwing, in 1976. Billy’s interest in theauto industry started with his love ofdrag racing. He was a top driver in theNHRA and IHRA Pro Stock divisionsfor several years. When he was notrepairing cars in his garage, Billyworked after hours, and on weekends, preparing his car for the race.

Ewing Automotive was a home-basedbusiness for 14 years before moving toits present location on Lenora ChurchRoad in Snellville in 1990. The shophas ten service bays in 5,000 square feetof work space. The company hasexpanded by a small amount over theyears, with their biggest focus on retain-ing the current customer base for repeatbusiness.

There are four employees at EwingAutomotive, with two technicians thatare ASE-Certified in several fields, including General Maintenance, TuneUps and Engine Diagnostic and Repair, among others. Ewing offers pay incen-tives to encourage its technicians to fur-ther their automotive education. BillyEwing says to be an auto mechanic, ortechnician, “You have to know more than

a doctor because the human body hasn’tchanged since the first one was created. We in the automotive field cannot staythe same. The automobile has, and willconstantly change.”

Ewing Automotive does a lot of in-house work instead of being just partchangers. They do all of their own in-house certified cylinder head, surfacelathe and mill port work. They alsorepair certain items on vehicles byrepairing existing parts when possible.

“Ewing Automotive goes in-depth torepair vehicles that other shops couldn’tbecause of the competitor’s lack ofknowledge,” says Billy Ewing. “Ittakes years of experience to become agood mechanic, seeing and hearing dif-ferent problems that you can’t get in theclassroom.”

For the past three years, Ewing hasbeen an installer of JASPERRemanufactured gas engines (withinstallation kits) transmissions and differentials. “JASPER’s products areready to install,” says Billy. “They havean excellent, friendly staff of inside andoutside personnel, and a warranty thatyou can depend on, especially whenyou need it.”

The business philosophy at EwingAutomotive is a simple one: ‘You’reonly as good as the work you do, andthe products you sell.’ “Customers arespecial because they picked EwingAutomotive,” added Ewing. “Theycould have gone somewhere else butthey chose to come to us.”

Diesel Dynamometer TestingIn 2005, JASPER started the installa-

tion of four new diesel engine dyna-mometers. Two of the rooms use waterbrake dynamometers, while the other tworooms have new eddy brake systems.Water brakes use water to create a resist-ance to the engine’s movement, whileeddy brakes use electricity. Eddy brakeshave several advantages over waterbrakes, including less maintenance, quicker response, and smoother opera-tion. Over the past year, JASPER hasinstalled many sensors and programupgrades to all four dynamometer roomsto better determine how the engine anddynamometer are running. We alsodesigned and installed a software pro-gram that automatically gathers and sortsall the information from each engine wetest. Each engine’s performance is com-pared to a standard for that engine type, and passes or fails the run test.

Each room has a computer that gath-ers information while the engine is run-ning. It also controls the engine throttleand dynamometer load, and creates a dis-play for the operator to monitor all oper-ations of the dyno. Readings taken fromthe engine include cooling water temper-ature, oil temperature, engine RPM,

torque, horsepower, smoke emissions, fuel pressure, oil pressure, turbo boostpressure, cooling water flow rate, dynamometer bearing temperatures, andengine and dynamometer vibration lev-els. Air temperature, air pressure andhumidity are also monitored to con-stantly calculate SAE corrected horse-power readings.

Each engine tested on thedynamometers has a run profile. Thisprofile tells the computer what RPMand horsepower the engine should berun at, and sets safety limits. The oper-ator simply enters a 6-digit identifica-tion number, starts the engine, andbegins the test. The computer takesover from there, automatically increas-ing RPM and horsepower levels. Mostengines are run at 50 horsepower for 10minutes, then at 100 horsepower for 10minutes. The run finishes up with a fullpower pull, finding the maximumtorque and horsepower output of theengine. If any safety limits are crossed, the operator receives a warning on thecomputer screen. If the problem is notcorrected, the computer automaticallyshuts the engine down according towhat the problem is. For example, ifthe cooling water is too hot, the engineis shut off, but an external pump contin-ues to circulate the water to cool theengine. If an engine exceeds its RPMlimit, the ignition power is shut off and

the dynamometer is fully loaded to stopthe engine. The engine will also be shutdown if there is insufficient water flow,or if it has unusually high vibration lev-els. There are over 200 different pro-files with different run levels and safetylimits.

When an engine is tested, thedynamometer program takes readingsfrom each sensor every tenth of a sec-ond, then creates a spreadsheet contain-ing all the information from the run. Each engine is run for about a half-hour, so each run file contains over15,000 lines of data, 15 columns wide. That’s more than 225,000 numbers. Asyou can imagine, it is difficult to lookthrough this information and see howthe engine performed, so a programdesigned by JASPER’s computer depart-ment reads the spreadsheet and picksout the vital information. The programlooks for maximum horsepower, enginespeed at max horsepower, smoke emis-sions at max horsepower, oil pressure atmax horsepower, oil pressure at idle, and fuel and turbo boost pressures. These numbers are automatically com-pared in the program to a standard forthat engine type, and the engine ispassed or failed. If the engine passes, itis sent to be painted and shipped. If theengine fails, the operator must deter-mine what the problem is, correct it,and re-test the engine.

A Cummins diesel engine is checked out on one of JASPER’s four dynamometer stands. This dynamometer uses a water brake to create the resistance.

JASPER Associate Heath Eckerle pours overthe numbers while the diesel engine under-goes dynamometer testing.

Newman’s appearance at South Bendovershadowed a dramatic victory byLafayette, Indiana’s, BrandonWagner who won the featurerace beating 16-year old BryanClausen to the stripe by lessthan a foot as the two carsraced side-by-side down thefront straightaway on the finallap.

Newman did make his pre-liminary heat race exciting, however. After qualifyingfourth out of 31 entries, hestarted sixth in the fourth heatand quickly picked off a pair ofcars to take fourth. Then onLap 4, with just enough roomto fit two cars in the turn,Newman found enough roomon the track to make it three-wide and squeeze past two oth-ers, almost taking the lead fromSteve Thinnes at the exit ofTurn 4. He settled for secondbehind Thinnes, one of fourheat winners during the event.

Look at any PowerMAX Spark PlugWire Set found in a JASPER installationkit, and you’ll find “SAE Class F” print-ed on each wire. But what does it meanand why is it important?

The SAE Class F rating indicatesthat the cables used in PowerMAX wireshave passed the full range of tests speci-fied by the Society of AutomotiveEngineers (SAE) under Standard J2031,the standard for ignition cables. The let-ter classification denotes the severity ofthe test conditions. Class F comprisesthe most severe conditions and is theSAE’s highest classification. The ClassF rating means the wire has been sub-jected to, and passed, numerous tests, including the accelerated life test, whichmeasures the cable’s ability to withstandexposure to salt water, oil and fuel, aswell as high and low temperatures. Thistesting is designed to make sure thewires can handle the cold of winter, theheat of summer and the chemicals foundin confined engine compartments.

An important part of this test is theThermal Overload Test. This testinvolves exposing PowerMAX wires to

PowerMAX Spark Plug Wires and SAE Class F (SAE J2031)

high temperatures, simulating as closelyas possible an engine compartment on ahot summer day. To pass the SAE J2031Thermal Overload Test and earn theClass F designation, the wire is exposedfor an extended period to 250° C (482°F) heat and is then rotated on a mandrelto stress the wire and to check fordefects. The wire must not show anysigns of cracks, fractures or other fail-ures. The resistance of the wire mustalso stay within a specified range tomake sure it is still capable of deliveringpower.

Based on the results of the test, thewire is assigned a Class from A to F.Even though Class F is the highest SAEclassification, PowerMAX engineerswere not content with merely meetingthis rigid standard. To further demon-

7

strate the superiority of PowerMAX overthe competition, a “heat ramp” test wasdeveloped and validated by an independ-ent third party. This test was designed tostress the cable by successively rampingup the temperature for an extended peri-od, then wrapping the wire around amandrel to check for signs of damage. Each time the wire passes, the tempera-ture is increased, until the wire reachesit’s maximum limit. In this testing,PowerMAX cable far exceeded the ClassF temperature rating and achieved a“Best in Class” protection index ratingvs. the competition.

Wallace, the 18 year old son of for-mer NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Serieschampion Rusty Wallace, earned thepole position with a new track record forARCA Series cars with a lap of 177.509mph (30.421 seconds), scorching theprevious record by 2.244 mph, or .390 ofa second. Wallace went on to dominatethe race, leading 63 of 103 laps on therainy Kentucky day.

In fact, just about the only thing hot-ter than Wallace that weekend was hisvictory lane burnout, which left an actu-al trail of flames in the infield grassafter some rubber he put down caughtfire.

The race was lengthened by two lapsto accommodate a green flag finish aftera spin on the frontstretch on lap 96.

When the race resumed on lap 101,Coleman got within a half-length ofWallace’s rear bumper, but could notfind a way around the eventual winner.

Braid or Monofilament?A lot of anglers ask: “When do I use braided

line over monofilament line?” The answer is:“Whenever the need arises.”

To better answer the question, I use Maxima’sUltragreen monofilament (mono) line the majorityof the time. Mono is very strong and abrasive-resistant and this is the main reason I like to use it.I think mono is best used when fishing around woodbecause it’s slick and tends not to get hung-up.

However, braid has its place, too. I use braidedline in situations such as flipping into heavy vegeta-tion mattes with large weights. Braid doesn’t stretchand is unmatched in sensitivity and strength.Bottom line, braid will cut through vegetation wheremono will not. I also prefer to use braid when mak-ing long casts with heavy blades and frogs.

Braid is a line that must be matched with the cor-rect rod. If not, you will more than likely lose fish.Be patient because it will take practice to find theline/rod combination that works best for you.
