number one for its academic rigour.

The Institute is known for its trans-

parency, fairness and ethical stan-

dards. It is the only institute which

does not have any Management

Quota or Institute Level seats and

believes in providing the opportu-

nity to every deserving candidate.

The Institute has an excellent infra-

structure - A/c classrooms and Wi-

Fi connectivity. It has a state of the

art library and computer center. It

also has a unique, informal and fam-

ily type culture which is congenial

for higher learning and enables

every student to blossom and real-

ize his full potential.

-Prof P. L. Arya (Director, N. L. Dalmia Institute

of Management Studies and Re-search)

N L Dalmia Institute of Management

Studies and Research was estab-

lished in the year 1997. The Insti-

tute has inculcated the competitive

spirit among its students right since

its inception. It was the first insti-

tute to organize a Marketing fair in

line with the fair of XLRI. The event

was a grand success with 25 compa-

nies participating through various management games. The Institute

had 60 students in its MMS Pro-

gramme and 30 in its Part Time

PGDBM Programme.

Prof P. L. Arya joined the Institute in

August 1998 and gave fillip to the

academic rigour and discipline. The

Institute had a small faculty team

and depended largely on visiting

faculty then. The major specializa-

tion during the first 4 years of the

Institute was Systems, followed by

Marketing, Finance and HR in that

order.

A lot changed during the subsequent

years, the Institute won its first

Dandekar Trophy organized by the

Bombay Management Association in

2001. In the year 2001 Dr. S Sadri,

Professor of OB and HR was

awarded the ‘Best Teacher of Man-

agement’ by BMA. Mr. Anurag Arya

and Mr. Amit Ahuja were awarded

the ‘Best Student of Management’ by

BMA in the year 2002 and 2003 re-

spectively.

The Institute proved its mettle in

Marketing Strategy by winning

“Comstrat” organized by FCB ULKA in 2004. With the opening up of Fi-

nancial Market, the Institute found a

large number of students opting for

Finance as their specialization and

hence additional faculties were re-

cruited in this area. True recognition

came to the Institute when it won

the ‘Equity Research Competition

Khoj’ in 2005, a competition in which

IIM-A, B, C, XLRI and SP Jain were

the other finalists.

Today the Institute has 33 full time

faculty members. Many of them have

done their Management studies from

IIM, IIT and other leading foreign and

Indian Universities.

It is now amongst the top 5 B schools

in Mumbai University in terms of the

“Never doubt that a small group of

thoughtful, committed people can

change the world. Indeed, it is the only

thing that ever has.”

- Margaret Mead.

The HR Club, under the able guid-

ance of Prof. N. Rajan, Prof. Ronie

D’Costa & Prof. Pooja Shah; from its

inception has its roots in the deep

understanding of HR and manage-

ment related issues. Its purpose is

to provide highly competent manag-

ers with the necessary exposure to

the modern concerns related to

Human Resource Management.

The platform aims at giving the

essential corporate exposure to

the students by inviting eminent

people from the industry for guest

lectures and workshops.

It also provides an opportunity to

the students for putting on their

thinking caps and translating ideas

into actions. HR Club also facili-

tates live projects, works on in-

creasing corporate interaction and

brain-storming on current issues in

the area of Human Resources.

Club activities such as Management

games, Quiz and screening of movies

are organized on a regular basis.

Two major events of the HR Club

calendar are Manusandhan- a one day

seminar where eminent people from

the HR field speak on a particular

topic and Utkarsh- a national level

paper presentation competition.

The Club will also conduct an HR

Alumni Meet – a platform for all HR

Alumni to come back to the College

and share their experiences with us.

it to completion, team skills

The rigorous schedule that

one undergoes during MBA is

a real boon as it prepares one

for the real world. Multi-

tasking, meeting deadlines,

responding quickly and accu-

rately, are all very important

and these qualities are invari-

able learnt during the grill.

It is understandable that one

may have apprehensions about

what may lie ahead and how it

The Beginning……

Our Alumnus Speaks... Hello! Dear friends….

I have to say I was delighted on

being asked to share my views

for the Newsletter. Opportuni-

ties such as these are always

nice as they give a chance to

retrospect and re-live cher-

ished memories.

Congratulations to all on being

a part of a dynamic HR team,

under such good leadership.

You are in an absolute wonder-

ful phase of learning. Please do

make the most of it. Do take

up any opportunity that comes

your way, or better still find

new opportunities that will

benefit you, your colleagues

and the Institute at large. A lot

of opportunities may come

across your way, where you

can discover certain qualities

or hone existing qualities, e.g.

speaking in public, interacting

and dealing with variety of

people/senior management,

taking up a task and executing

would be in the industry. I

would just suggest on keeping

up the learning curve. It is never

too late to learn anything new

and no kind of work is little.

Be open for any kind of work

in the beginning as it is all a

part of learning. Also, no mat-

ter how high you go, and no

matter how many equally tempting paths may lie ahead

of you, if it is not the ethical

way to go about it, you would

rather not tread it.

Lastly, I think the Alumni

Newsletter is a wonderful

initiative. When we speak

about academic-industry inter-

face, this helps in its own way.

All the Very Best!

reduced

And then the events began to

unfold,

As everyone had their hearts’

stories told

I heard them all, with an in-

credulous look

Coz they were reading pages

from my life’s book

And then it all started to make

sense

Understood life and its essence

Life’s like a movie, I have to say

Where we all have different

roles to play

Group of twenty five divided

into two

What laid ahead none of us

knew,

We entered the room in t-

shirts and jeans

We giggled and laughed as girls

in their teens,

We spoke of fear, film and

song,

Anything we could to get along,

But the facilitator did not allow

As he yelled “Here and Now”

We looked at each other, to-

tally confused,

All excitement gone, all fun

Our scripts are similar ; our

stories are same

How we enact is the name of

the game

One, two, three as the days

went by

Made 14 new friends,

including I

At the end of it all

I have something to say to sum

it all

It’s only at the end of something

That you realize how beautiful

was the Beginning…….

‘The Secret’ Revealed P A G E 3 V O L U M E 1 , I S S U E 1

The HR Club was kick started by the first event which was the screening of the movie ‘The Secret’ based on the novel by Rhonda Byrne. Prof. Rajan, Prof. Khedkar, Prof. Mohite, Prof. Pooja Shah, Prof. Ameet Dubey and Prof. Ronie D’costa marked the start of the Club with us students.

The Secret talks of The Law of Attraction. The process is broken down into three steps: ask, be-

lieve, and receive. The underlying theme is: you are the creator of your own destiny. Your thoughts have the power to manifest your desires. The Law of Attraction goes beyond positive thinking. The book empha-sizes the use of visualization tech-niques, gratitude, faith and affirma-tions to help focus your mental energy. The overall concept re-quires that the individual believes strongly in the process. Believing is

defined as “acting, thinking and speaking as if you have already re-ceived what you are asking for.” The book describes The Se-cret through the voices of many highly successful experts from many different fields including philoso-phers, psychologists, life coaches, motivational speakers, and business professionals. Each explains their understanding of the Law of Attrac-tion and how it affects reality. - Ms. Sonali Kapadia ([email protected])

Mr. Vijay Kumar Mahajan, an expert

on the subject Compensation &

Benefits visited HR students. .The

session was an interactive & enlight-

ening experience. His profound

knowledge on the subject was evi-

dent throughout the session.

Sir gave a detailed explanation of

The Hay Method of Job Evaluation

which is the most widely used in the world. It is perhaps best known for

its application to management, pro-

fessional and technical jobs. It is

also extensively used for clerical

and manual jobs and when a

single top-to-bottom evaluation

method is required as the basis

for integrated pay and grading

structures.

This can be represented by the

simple model:

INPUT - Know How PROCESSING- Problem Solving

OUTPUT–Accountability

Raju, Central PF Commissioner (West zone) clearly pointed out the harsh realities of public life in India. With 4400 Acts in place, flouting rules is rather easy. India ranks 2nd with respect to Natural Resources, Technical, Scientific & Managerial skills, yet we lag behind when it comes to strive for perfectionism in our public life. Corruption is seen as an essential tool to “get things done” and poli-tics is termed as a dirty game by the youth. Professions like Doctors, Engineers, CA, are over and above preferred to politicians (only 1-3 percent choose politics). It is essen-tial we posses holistic knowledge

over and above the confines of the management curriculum. Leadership in public life is manifold. Such qualities cannot be acquired merely with qualifications. We must leverage on our knowledge resource and use it to contribute to the better-ment of our country. We must aim to resolve conflicts between preaching and prac-ticing. Be it something as simple as civic sense and maintaining public hygiene. It is high time we made a start. -Ms. Deepika Rao

([email protected])

Leadership is the ability to take initiatives rather than choosing to be a spectator. Mocking the governing body for its follies, the corruption engulfing our system and more importantly criti-cizing our leaders for their inade-quacies is easy. But what does it take to enter the muck to clean up the filth? The Youth today, the Generation X, are termed as ‘Leaders of Tomorrow’. But can they truly live up to these expecta-tions when they fail to display lead-ership in the simple nuances of public life? Our esteemed guest Dr Mahendra

Other highlighting points from

the session were Mr. Mahajan’s

views that the only objectives

of compensation are attracting,

motivating & retaining employ-

ees & that compensation needs

to be used strategically because

it is not the panacea to all the

organizational evils. -Ms Deepika Amesar ([email protected])

The HR Batch of 2009-11 is one of the

most unique batches one would ever

come across. The class comprises of

twenty six girls and a very lucky boy. It is

highly unlikely for someone to be on

campus and not notice the ever ener-

getic batch.

The students come from diverse educa-

tional backgrounds like Engineering, Psy-chology, Management, Science, Com-

merce, Economics Honours and even

English Literature .The batch comprises

of a blend of freshers as well as experi-

enced students, with their experience

ranging from Banking, IT right up to Me-

dia.

The class is always bustling with enthusi-

asm and creativity, which is highly evi-

dent even if you happen to peep into the

class right from the door to the class

notice board. Everyone in the class adds

a new hint of freshness to it. In the class,

breakthrough moments can happen any

time.

A place where every idea sees the light

of the day because every ‘can we do

this?’ transforms into ‘let’s do it’ and

soon to ‘done!’

It is a place where everyone has a syn-

onymous feeling – ‘Proud to be a part

of the HR Batch 2011’.
