Competitive athletes have known for years that better nutrition can help them achieve their top performance. Today appreciation for sports nutrition is spreading to a much wider circle of people who exercise to keep fit4. At the same time, the science of sports nutrition is revealing new insights into the measurable benefits of nutrients, their optimal intakes and times of con- sumption. According to a recent state-ment by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), food supplements can boost athletic performance. The IOC advised athletes to be aware of their needs for calcium, iron and Vitamin D5.

Encouraged by governments, health professionals and the media, many people

are embracing regular physical activity as an essential part of a healthy lifestyle.

By 2008, the percentage of physically active Americans had increased to 88 %

of the population1. Similarly, in Europe, the percentage of people who engage in

physical activity increased by 22 % from 2002 to 20062. Sports participation

in China continues to climb, with 35 % of adults now engaging in sports at least

once a week3. As the number of people who exercise and understand the role

of nutrition in sports performance increases, many specialist products are now

gaining prominence with sports enthusiasts.

ery and supporting muscle development. Whether niche or mass market, sports nu-trition products need to pro-vide a discernable benefit for the target consumer.

Right time, right placePeptoPro® 7 is a protein hy-drolysate that contains all 20 amino acids in the same natural balance as casein, a milk protein, but with virtually no lactose or fat. It provides amino acids in the form of di-peptides and tripeptides, molecules so small they do not need further digestion in the body and can be de- livered straight to the mus-cles. This efficient amino acid delivery is especially important during intense physical activity when the body's digestive capacity is heavily compromised. Instant delivery of these amino acids protects the muscles during exercise and kick-starts the recovery process after ex-ercise. Efficient delivery of amino acids is important after exercise because there is a limited time frame, called the post-exercise "window of opportunity", before the muscle cells' capacity for nutrient absorption slows down8. During post-exercise recovery protein works in synergy with carbohydrate to boost the insulin response in trained endurance ath-letes and help replenish glycogen stores. In trials, PeptoPro has been shown to improve endurance and performance, stimulate mus- cle growth, accelerate recov-ery and reduce muscle

soreness9, 10, 11, 12. PeptoPro is completely and instantly sol- uble in cold water and is available in forms suitable for a variety of sports nutrition products.

Powerful formulationsThe antioxidants vitamins C, E, ß-carotene and Co-enzyme Q10 (CoQ10) protect cells against oxidative dam- age from exercise13, 14. Anti-oxidant supplementation has also been found to reduce muscle soreness after ex-ercise. Natural levels of CoQ10 can be increased with supplementation to re- duce exercise-induced mus- cular injury15 and improve endurance16, performance and recovery time17 in trained athletes. In un-trained individuals, it has been shown to improve the participants' energy levels during exercise18. B vitamins participate in en-ergy production and amino acid metabolism, and play many other important roles in the body19. Because rou-tine exercise increases the turnover and loss of B vita-mins, athletes may require twice the amount currently recommended for the gen-eral population20. Plus, ath-letes who participate in sports that limit body weight, such as gymnastics, ballet and wrestling, may be at risk for vitamin B deficits due to limited food intake21.

Vitamin D acts directly on the muscle to increase protein synthesis22. Sufficient intake of Vitamin D is associated

with muscle strength and physical performance, and has been shown to improve muscle function and bal-ance in seniors23. Leading experts believe the current recommended intake for vitamin D is too low to compensate for the lack of formation of vitamin D from sun exposure24.

Minerals such as calcium, iron, zinc, magnesium and chromium are equally suit-able for use in sports drinks as they are likely to be deficient in the diets of many athletes25. Iron is essential for carrying oxygen to working muscles, and inadequate intakes coupled with injuries can produce iron deficiency. Poor zinc levels may result in decreased heart and lung function, as well as reduced strength and endurance. Inadequate calcium intake

increases the risk of low bone mineral density and stress fractures. And lack of magnesium in a diet may lead to muscle cramps26 and decreased muscle per- formance27. Chromium may support the action of insulin at the cellular level and thereby stimulate glucose uptake by muscle28. Supplementation with omega-3 polyunsatu-rated, long-chain fatty acids (PUFAs) has been shown to reduce heart rate and oxygen consumption during exercise29, improve aerobic capacity30 and help relax the air passages in elite athletes31.

Incidentally, the sales of softdrinks has been falling in recent years as wiser consumers look for healthier alternatives such as juices, teas or otherwise while saving cash by limiting purchases.

Native pacific islanders referring to coconut use the name "coco" as early as 1500. Then this word was perhaps first mentioned in print as early as 1555. It is a Spanish word meaning "face like monkey" due to the three round marks in coconut shell resembling eyes. In earlier times, in some tropical islands, natives used it in exchanging and purchasing some goods. Coconuts
