Everyone is in synch with the yoga instructor & the cats had a great time!

Favorites among AHS animallovers are the Yoga classes held atour shelters. Weather permitting,we do have classes within PopcornPark. The AHS Tinton Falls facilitydecided to hold a CAT YOGA forenthusiasts in our free-roaming catarea. Thanks to Beth Anne Tinklerfrom the Bradley Beach RecreationCenter, it was well attended ….

and obviously the cats enjoyed a little diversion from their cat naps! STAYTUNED FOR THE NEXT CLASS DATE!!!

Kenneth I. Leigland:“I first heard of Popcorn Park Zoo in 2018 in a book I found at a thriftstore titled "New Jersey Day Trips". When I visited, I was immediatelyimpressed by the great care all the animals received. I brought my girlfriend Michelle, an avid animal lover, and she fell in love with the place, especially that all the animals have names and each one has a story to tell.In fact, she is sponsoring Seven the horse. What better place to ask thelove of my life to marry me. On November 3rd, 2018, with Seven as ourwitness, I proposed and she said yes. We both cried a little and then gaveSeven some extra popcorn.”Michelle Narmour:“Ken couldn't have chosen a better place to pop the question. We considerall the animals to be our family and I am so happy that we got to sharethis life-changing moment with them. Seven knew exactly what was happening because she looked right into my eyes when Ken began hisunrehearsed speech. Seven then gave us privacy by slowly walking away.We then gave her some popcorn and she was pleased. Thank you PopcornPark for making this day so special.”

On the day she arrived, she was givenfood, warmth, and care. The video willshowyou her spa day!

She was starving as her caretaker left her tied to a banister in adarkened, unheated hallway.

We cannot imagine theanguish that this emaciateddog felt – she once had a loving home & through cir-cumstances she couldn’t comprehend, was kept tied toa banister in a darkened, unheated hallway in what isalleged to be a drug addict’sresidence. When the AHS was alerted tothe situation, Animal ControlOfficer Louise Ward was dispatched to the scene. Sheimmediately took the dogand gave her some dog foodas soon as she got into theambulance. When broughtback to the AHS Newark facility, a microchip was dis-covered! We immediately contacted the owner who had

lost her in 2011. It is not known if she had been stolen, lost, or had strayed, butsince her owner had spayed her, she could not be used as a breeding machine. The pathetic dog weighed only 26 pounds; she now tips the scale at 45 pounds. Her owner moved to Florida & due to present circumstances, is unable to take“Lyric” who is about 8 years old. Their daughter came to visit Lyric & wasshocked at the condition in which she had become. Lyric’s video shows the loving dog who enjoys people, a spa day, belly rubs, and meeting another dog.Her exuberant enjoyment of life is so heartwrenching when we think of howlong she was kept in a solitary situation - starving for food & love

Peggy came in missing a partof her right front leg. Whetherthis was due to a congenitaldeformity or an old injury, we

We had no idea what happened to this girl, but she was emotionally spent – exhausted and withdrawn. When this female dog arrived at the AHS Newark shelter, she had obviously been abused, neglected, and emotionally traumatized and was withdrawn from our staff. It was a slow warm-up for the grimy

stray to convince her of how much we cared and were concerned for her health. On the 7th day of herstray hold, the AHS received a call from a man who said it was his dog and he did not want her

spayed. It was obvious to us that this lass was kept ---as an outside dog & used as a breeding machine. We waited … and waited … and thankfully, he never showed up to physically identify the dog. We

then moved the female dog to our Tinton Falls facility for a more peaceful area to allow her to gain amore tranquil composure. After a few more weeks, wespayed her and that worried, beaten look has disap-

DENIED INTAKE BY HUMANE SHELTER, MAZI BROUGHT TO AHS

USED, ABUSED, EXPLOITED, AND EMOTIONALLY SPENT

Mazi is an 8-year-old waiting tolive his sunset years with a loving family.

It was obvious that there were untreatedhead wounds that have now healed.

This adorable 8 year old senior boy is Mazi. Mazi wassurrendered to us when his owners could no longer carefor him. Although Mazi’s owners live in Hudson County& are not residents of the towns we contract with, theyneeded help. According to Mazi’s owners, Liberty AnimalShelter informed them they wouldn't have room for Mazifor approximately 4 months. His family wanted to beresponsible and surrender him to a shelter instead of trying to rehome him online. Trying to rehome a pet canbe a dangerous decision as animals can be used as bait,

for breeding, etc. What if an animal is placed for adoption & there is an allergy in the family? Or thelandlord says no pets allowed? It becomes a revolving door for an unwanted dog. They told us Mazi was dog, cat, and kid friendly. They also let us know he has food allergies and chronicear infections. We are glad they brought Mazi to us where he can be checked out by our medical staff, neutered and placed up for adoption.Mazi is extremely affectionate, friendly and people focused. He sat and offered paw for a treat, which heaccepted softly from our fingers. He loved chasing the tennis ball around our evaluation room and hadno issues sharing either his toy or bone whenever asked. Mazi was relaxed at his food bowl and comfortable meeting a female dog outside. This handsome boy is up for adoption and eager to find aforever home for the remainder of his golden years. For more information on Mazi, call AHS at 973-824-7080 or e-mail Jennifer at [email protected] refer to File 36270.Check out Mazi on YouTube: https://youtu.be/bxPIhzZwOIc

Have A Heart this Valentines’ Dayand make one (or more) of the animals

pictured here your sweetheart. Why? For reasons we don’t understand, each hasvery few or no sponsors. We don’t have

the heart to tell them; we only know howexcited they get when they hear someone

wants to sponsor them. Could that be you?

Percy the peacock may be snowwhite, but he’s feeling a littleblue. His colorful cousins, Pierreand friends, seem to have all thesponsors, but Percy? Not somuch. He’s not one to complain, but we see he looks a littledown. This handsome fellowroams quietly about PopcornPark and would just love toknow you care.

How cute is this little guy?Apparently not cute enough, because he, too, is lacking in

sponsors. His name is North, andhe and his brother South wereborn to a sheep we rescued off

the Garden State Parkway(Reeba) along with her daughter,

Sheeba. The little family stays veryclose together at Popcorn Park,

but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t want to be loved.

Just look at that face ... he’s allbut begging you to give him

a little sponsorship love. OK, we’re not proud - we’ll say it ... please?

We’ll admit it- the tortoises

are not themost drop-dead-gor-

geous animalsat PopcornPark, but ...underneaththat hard shell is a soft interior, and a very soft heart that quietly yearns for a little love. Each of our 8

Newark's Branch Brook Park has a shamefully bad reputation for being aplace where creeps who no longer wish to take responsibility for theirunwanted, sick, and injured dogs and cats abandon them. It is sadly incomprehensible that so many people have lost the love and reverence forlife, and so quickly toss aside helpless animals. The Chihuahua type, who is about 8 years old, was rescued from this park, then sent to the AHS shelter in Tinton Falls. After a veterinary examination,he was found to have two tumors which were then removed. A biopsyrevealed that one tumor was malignant. We didn’t know if Ferragamo hada month, a year, or more ... but on his bucket list was a great home forwhatever time he has left. A special call went out to Ready for Rescue about this older guy & newstravels fast. Soon he was off to his new home & we hear he is doing so well! He’s cuddly, happy, friendly, & loving life. This adorable kitten came in as a homeless, sick, debilitat-ed stray that needed immediate care. She was brought toAHS Tinton Falls shelter and Dr. Emily Marion took overthe care of the patient pussycat who just meowed, cravingfor attention. Alexandra had a horrible eye infection and itwas found that the eyes could not be saved and both eyeshad to be removed. Her photo and story were featured onFacebook in the hope of finding a loving purrrson toadopt her. Jamie Nichols of Asbury Park came in, met Alexandra, andwent home to read about sightless cats before she wouldmake that important decision. What she found was thatblind kitties are just like “normal” cats as long as they aregiven a safe, indoor environment. According to Jamie,“losing her sight has only enhanced her other primal sens-es … meaning she hears every little sound & senses move-ment around her.”Jamie (and Alexandra) had a banner day when Jamieadopted the adorable loving lass & named her Theia afterthe Titan Goddess of sight. In just a week, Theia has navi-gated in her new home & could get from point to point asany other sighted cat. She has even memorized how toclimb up & down her 72” cat tower. Feeding time is thesame – a few light taps on t he ground & she’s munchingon her food in no time. Litter box training is no problem– as long as you don’t plan on moving the box or herbowls. Enrichment & playtime are essential – just look fortoys with sounds, smells, balls, & wands with bells or catnip toys. As Jamie has found out, Theia continues torove that her abilities are not limited. “Adopting a blindkitty is the best decision I made in 2018 & would highlyrecommend it to anyone that has room & love in theirheart!”. It will providehealthier meals to thousands of students while also promotinghigher welfare living conditions for farm animals. Currently, thevast majority of farm animals are raised in industrialized, unsanitary warehouses where they are so packed together, theycan barely move. Those involved hope to transition the food procurement systems away from the status quo toward farmingmethods where animals are able to roam, forage, & socialize. Gracie inspired us in numerous ways. After adoptingher, we kept thinking about all the other dogs that werestill unfortunately in a shelter, without a home. Wewanted to do something to help these animals, but wewere only fifteen at the time, and most shelters had aminimum age of eighteen. This is when we discoveredAHS Tinton Falls, where junior volunteers only neededto be fourteen.

Eager to make an impact on the lives ofthese animals, we went through orienta-tion, and immediately started to volun-teer. We spent time with the animals, took the dogs on walks, brought downsupplies, and even introduced the ani-mals to potential adopters. We evenadopted our second little furry friend,Charlie, from AHS Tinton Falls afterfalling in love with him. After manymonths of volunteering here, we decidedthat it was time to do more. We wantedto make a bigger impact and help theshelter in any way we could. So, we start-ed an organization called Gracie GivesBack.

This name was inspired because of ourown dog, Gracie. We saw it as a way ofour rescued dog to be “giving back” toher other four-legged friends at the shel-ters. We set up clothing drives, baggingevents, and donation bins. Everything wereceived went right back to the shelter.

We brought mountains of beds, food, toys, towels, treats, and many more supplies down to theshelter, and we continue doing so today. It makes our hearts so full that we are able to makesuch a difference in the lives of these animals!

To attain as many outreaches as possible, we also started the Manalapan Animal Club (M.A.C.)at our school. We have monthly meetings, and one of our main goals is to spread awareness ofthe importance of adopting a shelter animal opposed to purchasing one from a breeder. Weonly started the club this year, but we plan on doing many fundraisers to help various sheltersin Monmouth County, and we can’t wait to see what the year has in store for us. We have manymembers enrolled in our club, and they are all excited to help shelter animals, just like we are! This spring, we plan on doing fundraisers specifically for the kittens’ special food that they needto thrive, and we are very determined to help as many kittens as we possibly can.

We cannot thank Ronnie and AHS Tinton Falls enough for their dedication and hard-work to thecommunity. These animals’ lives have changed for the better. We know it may not always beeasy, but it will always be worth it! “

“Our names are Megan and Shannon Josephs, and we are currently juniors at Manalapan HighSchool. We have been involved with helping shelter animals for well over a year now, lovingevery minute of it. Our inspiration for everything started with a scared, innocent shelter animalnamed Gracie.

Gracie was a special dog not only because of her loving personality, but because of her trauma-tizing past. She was an adult dog transported up fromSouth Carolina, and out of pure fate, she was given thelast spot on the transport. She was in rough shape, withmange, heartworm, kennel cough, ringworm, traumato her spine, and a shotgun pellet lodged into her rib. And, even after all of this, she still came up to humanswith a beaming smile, wagging tail, and her big, brownpuppy dog eyes. We fell in love with Gracie, and weknew we wanted her to be in our lives. This is when wedecided to adopt her from Cuddly Creatures, Inc.

GRACIE IS THE INSPIRATION FOR MANALAPAN SISTERS WHOORGANIZE FUND RAISING EFFORTS!

NEW YORK CITYDuring mid-December, someone abandoned sealed buckets with catsinside. A security camera footage shows a man leaving two cats, at sep-arate times in two different locations, each in the same type of sealedbucket. The buckets were placed in areas hard to find; one was left on acity street with trash to blend in. The cats are now at Animal Haven.

Amara is one lucky girl .....not lucky in that she wasabandoned by her heart-less owner in a Newarkpark in her time of need, but lucky in that somegood people took noticeof the struggling dog, andflagged down animal con-trol to help, rather thanturning away from thispoor soul. Had Amara notreceived help that fatefulday, she surely would havedied. She was sufferingwith severe pyometra andwhen our AHS-Newarkveterinarian spayed her,

her terribly infected uterus weighed seven pounds! Since that day in October2018, Amara's life has completely changed, for the better. Now at AHS/PopcornPark the senior girl lives in peace and comfort, and gets so much love and attentionthat she must think she's in heaven! Besides the life-threatening pyometra, Amaraalso had several masses that required removal, and she has some crickety, arthriticlegs, which we treat with adequan injections and pain management. Amara is one ofthe nicest, sweetest dogs you will ever meet and while she awaits that special familythat will welcome her home, she's been added to our Share-A-Pet program so shecan get extra love and attention from some wonderful sponsors. Harmony and Joey are the sweetest little cat couple and have beenthrough such a trauma in their young lives. In November, 2018, theirheartless owner took them to an RV park that was closed for the season, and abandoned them along with their kittens. They were leftwith a thin, crocheted blanket, which did nothing to protect themfrom the cold, wind, and rain they endured before they were rescued. Our ACO, Maria, went to great lengths to rescue the little family andwhen she brought them all to safety, they could not be happier ormore grateful. Joey and Harmony are so very friendly, sociable, easygoing, and love to get attention. They are extremely bonded with eachother and need a home where they can stay together forever. Untilthen, they've been added to our Share-A-Pet program so they cancuddle up with some great sponsors! (Forked Rover)

She underwent severalmonths of treatment to cure thedeadly disease and now she ishappy, healthy, and heartworm-free! She is such a love, makingfriends easily with both peopleand other dogs, and is so deserv-ing of a great home. Until then,Pepper has been added to ourShare-A-Pet program. (Newark)

The Share-A-Pet program is a unique program that we established in 1978 as a way tohave you, our compassionate and caring supporter, get closely involved in the life of an ani-mal in our care. As a Share-A-Pet parent, you can choose to sponsor an animal in need andwill receive updates and photos from them three times per year, via regular mail or email.

Most dogs on the program reside in our Animal Haven Farm, a beautiful and peaceful area, and you can take them for a walk or spend some time with them. Cats live in either Kitty

City or another free-roaming area where they are loved and well cared for, and you can visitthem and get up close and purr-sonal with them, too. Sponsorship of an animal is just a$10.00 monthly donation, which goes directly toward the care of your Share-A-Pet. Anyfunds exceeding the needs of your sponsored animal will go toward the care of another

Share-A-Pet. Sponsorship also includes a membership card and free admission to PopcornPark Animal Refuge. You can view animals available for sponsorship in our Share-A-Pet
