European Shark Week 2010
This is a unique opportunity not just fordivers but all European Union citizens
and shark advocates around the worldto show our support for sharkconservation and start to effect realchange before its too late!
During this years European Shark week, Project AWARE, wants to radivers and shark enthusiasts to demand that members of the EuropeaParliament (MEPs) vote to secure the health of shark populations andto strengthen the EU Shark Finning ban.
Why is this Necessary
The EU banned Shar
Finning in 2003, butusual loopholes in thregulation seriouslyhamper all attemptsat enforcement.Nearly four years agthe MEPs asked theEuropean Commissioto Strengthen the EUShark Finning Ban.TEUs Plan of Action f
Sharks was released
February 2009. Yet today this ban remains filled with loopholes, putting sharks at risk.In 2011, the European Parliament will vote on a new regulation thatthe Commission is currently drafting. We need to ensure that MEPscontinue to push for the closure of these shark finning loopholes.

What is Shark FinningShark fins are by far the most valuable part of a fished shark andare in high demand for the Asian delicacy shark fin soup. Shark"finning" refers to the removal of shark fins and the discard at sea
of the much less valuable shark carcass. The finless and often stillliving sharks are thrown back into the sea to save room on boardfor more valuable species like tuna and swordfish. Please visithttp://bit.ly/SharkFinningfor more information.
So what can we do? Visit the Project AWARE website
