    Step 1 The blueprint

Draw a circle and mark its center. Dont push too hard with the pencil.

    Step 11

Divide the eye in three parts. Draw two half circles in second 1/3 of the eye.

It doesnt look right! Common mistakes:

Error 1: The jaw starts too high and the face looks triangular. Start the jaw a little bit lower and

make the lines soft, close to the gidelines.

  • 7/30/2019 Drawing the Model

    15/154

Error 2: The eyes are too separated. Always leave some space from the eyes outer corner to the

head outline and distance equal to about one eye between the two.

    16/154

Step 1: Draw a hairstyle outlines

Draw the outlines of the hairstyle you like.

Tip:Make sure youve marked some of the ends of the hair and you have a hair path. In case your

hairstyle doesnt need a path, the same coloring rules will be applied to the hairline around the

    forehead.

Now imagine few ellipses covering the hair. Two of them will be placed always on the top of the

head. The number and position of the rest depends on the hair length. For the example illustration

two ellipses ( at chin and at shoulder level) are just enough.

    Step 2: Draw the highlights

Having the position of the ellipses in mind, start building the highlights with a very light color.

Start your lines from outside of the ellipse and finish about its border. For best results try to makethe hairs gradually disappear as you enter the ellipse and leave its center white.

  • 7/30/2019 Drawing the Model

    17/154

Tip: Find balance in the width of each hair. If you draw too many and too thin lines they will take you

an eternity to finish; if you draw them too quickly your fashion sketch might look messy.

    Step 3: Mark the shadows

Shadows, of course depend on the light source and many other things, but in this tutorial well use

the basic shadows rule:Whats behind or in the deep is darker!

So color the area around the head using a darker shade, since its behind the face.

  • 7/30/2019 Drawing the Model

    18/154

The area behind the ear is darker too and right next to the hair path there will be some shadows.

    Step 4: Add the Basetone

Add a second layer of hairs that blend it with the highlights from step 2.

Pick a color that is darker than the highlights, but lighter that the shadow tone.

Tip: Every new layer of hairs starts further away from the ellipse and ends (blending) where the

    previous layer started.

Blend gently with the highlights from top and bottom side of each ellipse. Remember not to cover

the highlights completely- part of them should remain visible.

  • 7/30/2019 Drawing the Model

    19/154

Notice that near the path the brush strokes follow the head shape and are curving.

    Step 5: Fill it all

Use the same color from previous step to fill the empty spots of the hair. Dont worry if its not

  • 7/30/2019 Drawing the Model

    20/154

    perfect at this point.

Step 6: Draw 3nd layer of hair

Take the shadows color and the next layer of hairs.

Start from the shadow areas. The lines should cover part of the base color, but never touch the

  • 7/30/2019 Drawing the Model

    21/154

highlights. Keep the direction of the lines parallel to the outlines.

Step 7: Draw 4rd layer of hair

To make the hair look more realistic you need to add a last layer of hairs. Use a color even darker

than your shadows- maybe something greyish or even black for brunettes. Start the furtherst away

  • 7/30/2019 Drawing the Model

    22/154

from the ellipses and move carefully in.

    Step 8: Blend!

After you went through all the steps most probably you will need to blend the result in order to

make the hair appear more natural and smooth. Use the same technique filling all the gaps and

  • 7/30/2019 Drawing the Model

    23/154

uneven parts that you dont like. Work until youre satisfied.

Step 9: Glitters in my hair

This is an optional step that goes very well with most formal hairstyles. Add few white dots in

various sizes. You can even draw tiny stars here and there. Place these dots near the highlighted

  • 7/30/2019 Drawing the Model

    24/154

areas and be aware of not overworking it.

Hopefully this how to draw shiny hair technique was helpful for you. Have fun creating amazing

Step 1 Drawing the fashion face

Start by drawing the fashion face. Do everything except for the mouth. When you are drawing a

model with slightly open lips you may want to draw the eyesjust a little more closed than usually.

This way she will get this seductive expression you are going for.

    Step 2 Set the guidelines

Find the middle of the space between the nose and the chin. Mark it with a horizontal line that

should be long enough to touch the lines if pulled down from the center of the eyes. This is the

    mouth Centerline.

  • 7/30/2019 Drawing the Model

    27/154

Tip:Depnding on the race and specific features of your model the size of the mouth may vary. This

is the maximum width of the mouth that will look nice. xperiment with smaller lips to see how it

    looks.

    Step 3 Draw a box

Divide the mouth Centerline in 4(four) equal segments. Find the middle of the Centerline-to-nose

    fragment and the Centerline-to-chin one.

  • 7/30/2019 Drawing the Model

    28/154

When you are ready with these guidelines they should remind a square or a box.

Step 4 Draw the upper lip

Draw an arch to indicate the upper lip. The arch should start from one of mouth Centerlines

ends, continue up until it touches the little horizontal guideline, bend, touch the guideline

again and then finish at the opposite end of the mouth Centerline.

Use the separators from the previous step to determine how wide the smaller arch should be. Try to

  • 7/30/2019 Drawing the Model

    29/154

follow the curve of the bigger one.

    Step 5 The secrets

Its time to draw the important little details that will make those lips look sexy and gorgeous.

Firstly, draw a little dip in the top of the upper lip.

Then, go to the mouth Centerline and make the upper lip overlaps the lower one ever so slightly.

Now mark the lower lip. Make sure you use the already drawn guideline and that the lower lip line

  • 7/30/2019 Drawing the Model

    30/154

doesnt go all the way to the Centerline. Just hint the form of the mouth.

    Step 6 Draw the highlights

Clean up the unnecessary lines and outline the mouth with a color slightly darker than the one, you

    have picked for the lipstick.

Indicate the hightlighted parts of the lips. Usually there is a kidney-shaped highlight in the center of

  • 7/30/2019 Drawing the Model

    31/154

the lower lip and two separate highlights placed on the upper lip.

    Step 7 Add color

Fill the sexy lips with a solid lipstick color. Carefully go around the highlights.

  • 7/30/2019 Drawing the Model

    32/154

Notice the little dash, added to hint the chin of the model.

    Step 8 Draw the shadows

Add some shadows to both the upper and the lower lips. Use a color slightly darker than your base

    lipstick tone.

For the upper lip:follo the form of the smaller arch and let the shadow reach just under the

highlights. By this dramatic contrast you give your fashion illustration fuller, sexier lips.

For the lower lip: Draw a triangle in the middle of the Centerline and a small shadow underneath the

    kidney-shaped light.

Tip: In some illustrations a light grey shadow casted from the upper lip on the teeth would look nice.

You dont need to draw every tooth the way it is in real life. Just leave it white and simple.

Drawing eyes for fashion illustration differs in various ways from drawing

realistic ones. You need to make the eye shape enlonged and with less details. Adding eyes and face

details to your sketch will not distract the viewer from your design, but keep his attention and

interest. Follow this step by step tutorial and make the presence of your designs stronger.

    Step 1 The guidelines

Divide the head in three and mark the middle of the second section.

*If you are not really satisfied with the face shape of your model check out theHow to draw fashion

face tutorial where you will see additional way to place the eyes correctly.

  • 7/30/2019 Drawing the Model

    36/154

Step 2 Finding the right place

Eyes should never be touching the outline of the face and should be of equal size each. Leave some

space from the sides to draw the temples and divide the rest in three equal parts.

Tip: According to the Golden rule between the eyes enough space for a third one should be left. This

guarantees you a pretty look. In my illustrations I prefer to leave just a little bit less. Its just my

    personal preference.

  • 7/30/2019 Drawing the Model

    37/154

    Step 3

Mark how wide the eyes are going to be. Remember that in fashion you are looking for a glamorous,

sophisticated look. Keep the lines comparatively close to each other.

  • 7/30/2019 Drawing the Model

    38/154

    Step 4

Close the eye shapes with tilted lines the way that it is shown.

In this example the right eye will be opened and the left one-closed.

  • 7/30/2019 Drawing the Model

    39/154

    Step 5

Soften the edges and find the middle of the eye.

For the opened eye draw a curved line coming down, that starts from the Centerline. These curves

will give your model a sexy cat look.

  • 7/30/2019 Drawing the Model

    40/154

    Step 6 Drawing the pupil

If she is looking straight forward your models pupil will be situated in themiddle 1/3 of the eye.

Draw two overlapping circles and hide about half of them under the upper eyelid. Fill the inner one

with black, leaving a tiny white dot to make the eye come alive.

Tip: If your are looking for more drama and mystery in the face expression of your girl try to hide

small part of the circles under the lower lid too.

  • 7/30/2019 Drawing the Model

    41/154

    Step 7: The eyelashes

Bold the outline of the eye trying not to change the original form. This will serve for eyeliner and

eyelashes. Notice that the bolding of the lower side ends at the eye Centerline and that the upper

    lashes are a bit longer.

Mark the eyelashes of the closed eye.

In the inner corner of the eyes draw small ellipses ellipses for the tear ducts.

  • 7/30/2019 Drawing the Model

    42/154

    Step 8

Add very delicate eyelid detail, draw the eyebrows and finish the rest of the features. Note the lines

that mark the temple- you can skip them, but they are a nice finish touch if youd like.

Many times when drawing a male figure it turns out looking like a

female one. The habit of drawing only female models in the fashion sketches can make it difficult to

draw a male body and face features. In this tutorial you will learn the basic differences between

male and female body and face.Keep them in mind and your sketches will improve for sure. Have

    fun!

Step 1: Draw the Head and Face

Lets take a look of the differences between male and Female fashion face.

While females have more rounded head shape with small, delicate chin the gentlemen need bigger

    and more rectangular forms.

Men have larger brows that are placed closer to the eyes.

Their eyes are less rounded and the nose is more defined (often times bigger ). The ears are larger

and the upper lip is not as full as the female model. Notice the edge of the chin and the slant in the

    outer corner of the eye.

Step 2: Draw the Neck and Shoulders

The differences in the neck and the shoulders between men and girls are very visible. Men have

shorter and wider neck. The shoulders are considerably wider. Really a lot wider! Plus the men have

this Trapezius muscle, which forms a bulge between the neck and the shoulder.

    Step 3: Draw the Torso

The tricky difference between male and female torso is in the body outline. Men have no waist. The

torso is like a rectangular shape with an inverted triangle at chest level. Never give hips to men

figures too. The hourglass shape will make the figure look like a female one. Inspect the "How to

draw female torso" tutorial and make the changes needed.

    Step 4: Draw the Arms

When you draw the men's arms you need to be more aware of the muscles underneath the skin. The

arms are more massive and so are the hands. The arms of your male figure should be at least twice

bigger than the female ones youre used to draw.

    Step 5: Draw the legs

Men have bigger, more muscular legs. While youre seeking elegance and finess when drawing thefemale legs, in men body you want to make them look stable, massive and strong. Notice how bigger

the knees are and how close together the thighs are near the crotch. In the small illustration you can

wider the shoulders are. Compare the waists and the size of the arms. Notice how much more

Step 1: Wrist and hand base

From theHow to draw arms tutorial you already know how to reach to the point of the wrist.

Indicate it by drawing a horizontal ellipse and right underneath place a trapezoid for the palm.

The size of the trapezoid is about half of the face length.

Make sure that the palm shape is greater in length, than in width hands in fashion sketches are long

    and delicate.

    Step 2: The thumb

Draw a guideline for the thumb. This line should start a bit below the top of the trapezoid and end

below its base. Try not to draw the thumb too close or too far away from the palm.

    Step 4: Fingers guideline

To mark the fingers draw inverted trapezoid under the knuckles. This one should be the same sizeand the palm, but the bottom end will be heavily bended (almost like a triangle).

Tip: The palm + fingers length is about the same as the face of your model.

  • 7/30/2019 Drawing the Model

    55/154

    Step 5: Middle knuckles

Starting from the big knuckles draw 4 straight lines to mark the fingers. Make sure they fit in thenarrowed trapezoid shape and that the little finger is shorter than the index finger. The middle

finger should be the longest one.

Find the half way of the finger lines and draw 4 circles to indicate the middle knuckles. Note that

  • 7/30/2019 Drawing the Model

    56/154

they are not aligned, but rather placed on a curve.

Step 6: Draw the fingertipsThe fingertips are one of the most tricky parts of drawing the hands. Make sure that they look like

theletter Uand are not spiky or too thin.

The same applies for the thumb.

Double check if all the fingers are with different lengths and the thumb reaches just below the big

    knuckles.

Mark the half of the distance between the fingertips and the middle knuckles. This is the place for

    the little knuckles.

Tip:You wont actually draw the little knuckles, but the marking will help you keep the right

proportions when moving the hand in different positions.

  • 7/30/2019 Drawing the Model

    57/154

    Step 7: Finish the outlines

Now its time to finish the outlines of the hand. One of the things you should keep in mind is to stopthe line every time you reach a knuckle (even the little knuckles that we marked only via a curved

    line).

Also it is important to draw the joint between the fingers nicely curved, not pointy. This joint is right

    next to the big knuckles.

Step 8: DetailsErase all the unnecessary lines and add the details. Hint ever so slightly the knuckles with short lines

    and draw the nails.

Note that only half of the thumb fingernail is visible, because its twisted to the side. Always mind

It doesnt look right! Common mistakes:

  • 7/30/2019 Drawing the Model

    61/154

Error 1: Make sure the fingertips are not too pointy. Nor should be the place where fingers meet at

    the big knuckles.

Error 2: The fingers are all the same length and it looks like Mcikey Mouse hand. The middle finger

should be the longest one and the pinkie- shorter than the index finger.

  • 7/30/2019 Drawing the Model

    62/154

Error 3: Drawing a simple arch isn't enough to mark the nails. Leave a tiny bit of space between the

finger outlines and the nail, so that it looks more natural.

  • 7/30/2019 Drawing the Model

    63/154

Now that you understood the structure of the hand lets have some fun with different hand poses

1.You can tilt the palm and the fingers in all the directions you like.

    2. Try to bend the fingers in the middle knuckle.

    3. Cut the trapezoids in half and you can easily create side view for your models hand.

    4. Feel free to separate the little finger from the rest. It looks elegant and very fashion.

    5. Drawing the hands on the waist is no longer a problem. The index is pointing up, while the rest of

the fingers are resting. Be careful with the proportions between the fingers.

In this tutorial you will learn to draw arms in a few easy to follow steps.

Understanding how to properly draw the arms and the legs can dramatically improve your fashion

sketches and give you a big advantage in the presentation of your designs. This is a simplified tutorial

on arms, because you do not need to know how to draw anatomical arms for fashion sketches. I

hope youll enjoy and have fun!

    Step 1 Draw the guidelines

Begin with fully prepared torso. Check out theHow to draw female torsotutorial if you have issues

    drawing it.

Mark the shoulders with circles. Add a center to each circle and pull horizontal guidelines. One

where the waistline is and one at pelvis level. These are needed to determine where to place the

    elbow and the wrist.

Tip: The guidelines will help you find the exact length of the arms even when they are not in relaxed

position. The arm and the forearm are always more or less the same length.

  • 7/30/2019 Drawing the Model

    66/154

Step 2 Begin drawing the arms

Once you have marks to guide you, its time to add straight lines to indicate thedirection of the

arms. Start from the center point of the shoulders. You can play and change those lines however you

want, as long as you keep the proportions.

Tip: Notice that when the arms are relaxed the forearm goes slightly away from the body.If you draw

them perfectly aligned the arms of your model will look stiff.

  • 7/30/2019 Drawing the Model

    67/154

Step 3 Draw the elbow and the wrist

Having the size of the shoulder circle in mind, draw a smaller one for the elbow and another, even

smaller, for the wrist. Be careful with the sizes- the arm should taper gradually. Use the guidelines

youve already set to place the circles correctly.

  • 7/30/2019 Drawing the Model

    68/154

Draw an ellipse bellow the wrist circle to indicate the hand.

    Step 4

Connect via straight lines the shoulder, the elbow and the wrist circles.

Notice the arrow? It shows where the arm should begin from so it doesnt look separated from the

    torso in a weird way.

    Step 5 Drawing realistic arms

If you leave the arm drawn like this it wont look believable. Separatethe forearm in 3 equal parts.

In the section closest to the elbow add some volume (more to the inner side and less to the outer).

Blend gradually with the second section and leave the 3rd section the way it is.

You can also hint the knuckles of the outer side of the wrist.

clothes you create, giving them the needed grace and style to show the best of

    your designs.

    Step 1

    the middle of the body.

    Step 2

Divide the Centerline in 5 and a half sections each of which with the size of models head. Rememberthat drawing them the same size is fundamental for the final result. Dont overlap them and make

sure they are situated right on the Centerline.

Mark the ground where the five heads and a half end.

Tip: Some fashion illustrators prefer to draw the legs even more enlengthened. Following the steps

in this tutorial guarantees you elegant results, but if you are looking for exaggerated proportions feel

free to experiment with the number of the heads located on the Centerline.

  • 7/30/2019 Drawing the Model

    75/154

Step 3 Knees and ankles guidelines

Just where the second head ends draw two circles for the knees. Each circles radius is half the size

of the heads radius. Mark the center points.

Draw slightly smaller circles in the bottom most part of the last full head. These are for the ankles.

Mark the center points of the circles for the ankles as well.

All the guidelines you made should touch the Centerline.

  • 7/30/2019 Drawing the Model

    76/154

Mark the middle if the 4th head with a horizontal line.

    Step 4

Womens legs are known that have the silhouette of the letter X, and mens- of the letter O. Here is

    how you get this impression:

Separate the hips heads in two with a horizontal line. Connect the outer most point of the heads

with the center of the corresponding knee.

Draw a line from each knee to right next to the widest points of the 4th head.

  • 7/30/2019 Drawing the Model

    77/154

Connect back to the center of the ankle guideline.

    Step 5 Directions

If your figure is standing still the knees wouldnt be perfectly straight.

Close the circles form the sides with lines inclined from the inside to the outside. Do it for both the

    knees and the ankles.

Tip: Note that the inner inclined lines of the ankle start higher than the outer. This is a golden rule

for a good fashion illustration- always find a way to mark or even underline it.

  • 7/30/2019 Drawing the Model

    78/154

The thumb is (in most of the cases) the longest toe. Mark the feet outline with respect to this.

    Step 6 Thigh outlines

Connect the hips most external points with the knees outer side.

The inner side of the knee connects with the crotch by a straight vertical line.

Following the guidelines and draw the calf leaving just a little space between the guideline and the

actual outline. Soften the edges, as human body is curvy, not edgy.

    Step 7 Calfs

Connect the inner parts of the knee and the ankle by a straight line.

  • 7/30/2019 Drawing the Model

Finish the outline of the feet.

    Step 8 Details

To finish the calfs make the inner side curved from the knee to the half ot the 4th head.

The inner side of the calf being more dramatically curved and higher is a very essential part of

    drawing a successful fashion illustration.

Finish the rest of the details: Define the ankles and the toes, draw delicate dashes to hint the knee

Drawing a proportional, well-shaped body may look challenging to you. In this

tutorial you will discover the steps needed to make it look right quickly and easily with no effort.

    Have fun!

    Step 1

Draw an egg-shaped ellipse that will be the head of your model. Leave enough space for the body.

Once you have it, pull down a vertical Centerline for the torso.

    84/154

    Step 2 Shoulder line

Draw a horizontal line half-head below the chin. This is the shoulder line and also marks the length

    of the neck.

Tip: One of the reasons fashion illustrations look that graceful is the long necks of the models. Dont

be afraid to draw a neck longer than half the head size, but avoid making them shorter. A shorter

neck will give your model a masculine look.

  • 7/30/2019 Drawing the Model

    85/154

    Step 3 Torso guidelines

First, make two ellipses one next to another right under the shoulder line. They should be same sizeas the head and touch the Centerline. Make them one from each side.

Then, draw a third head between and under the latter two. The torso Centerline should separate it

in the middle. It is essential that you draw all the ellipses the same size in order that your model

    does not result unproportional.

  • 7/30/2019 Drawing the Model

    86/154

    Step 4

Begin by drawing a feminine neck that is slightly curved towards the Centerline in the middle.

Then, touching the upper two ellipses draw two smaller circles. The size of those is about of thehead. Make one from the left side and one for the right.

The circles in the lower half of the upper two ellipses mark the breasts of the model.

  • 7/30/2019 Drawing the Model

    87/154

    Step 5 Nice curves

Shape the shoulders. Try to make them slightly narrowed and follow the outline of the small circles

in the end.Next, shape the breasts as shown in the picture. Make sure to leave enough space between the

    shoulder line and the chest.

To draw the waist find the middle of the head frame and make two narrow lines. Follow the

    guidelines of the ellipse.

  • 7/30/2019 Drawing the Model

    88/154

    Step 6 Rib cage

Connect the waist and the breast by curved lines. These are for the rib cage.

  • 7/30/2019 Drawing the Model

    89/154

Step 7 The details make it work

Follow the circle guideline of the breast and add short lines from the opposite side of the outline you

already have.Mark the belly-button close to the bottom of the last head frame.

For the breastbone draw a small circle where the shoulder line and the torso Centerline cross.

Connect it with the shoulders by narrowed (up) lines.

  • 7/30/2019 Drawing the Model

    90/154

    Step 8

Soften the line of the collarbone.

Draw two circles from both sides of the Centerline again. These are the frame for the pelvis.Mark the crotch.

  • 7/30/2019 Drawing the Model

    91/154

    Step 9

Find the middle of the last ellipses and connect the waist and the crotch forming a diamond-like

shape.Just below the waistline draw two circles with the same size as those used for the shoulders.

  • 7/30/2019 Drawing the Model

There are many techniques of how to draw shadows for the skin of the fashion

sketches. This is my preferred method, because it is quick and easy to do and the final result is a very

nice mix between realistic looking skin and the manner that fashion sketches need to be done- not

too overworked. Enjoy this how to draw skin tutorial and pick the best of it to apply to your personal

    style.

    Step 1: Color the skin

The first thing you need to do is to fill your fashion figure with a solid skintone color. It could be

brighter or darker, depending on your personal preferences. Just make sure the rendering is flat,

    with no gaps.

This coloring technique can be applied to almost every type of drawing media. You only need to get

a skin color that you like and to follow the steps.

    107/154

Step 2: Draw the face shadows

Fill the area between the eyes and the eyebrows with a darker shade of the skin color. Make the

same with the space below the nose tip, the lips, cheekbones and the inner part of the ear if it is

    visible.

Notice the tiny shadow that is left at the side of the forehead and the very important shadow that

the hair casts, because it is overlapping the face of the model.

Tip: For fashion illustrations you dont need too dramatic shadows. Usually runway shows and

magazine photo sessions are very well lightened and only the most essential shadows are kept

    visible.

  • 7/30/2019 Drawing the Model

    108/154

    Step 3: Face highlights

Once you are done with drawing the skin shadows its time to make some highlights. Take a white

pencil or gauge paint and fill the areas shown. These are: the most bulged parts of the cheeks and

the chin, a tiny circle of light on the tip of the nose and a dash of white on the bridge. Dont forget

the forehead area over the brows.

All the highlights should be gently blended with the skin color if they look like having very sharp

    boundaries. Make it look natural.

Step 4: Draw the neck shadows

The shadows underneath the head is a must. Make sure you follow more or less the form of the chin

and make this shadow wide enough. Draw some shadows around the collar bones of your fashion

figure- this will make her look more skinny. However, if you overwork this area it is going to look not

  • 7/30/2019 Drawing the Model

    109/154

healthy and scary. Try to find the proper balance.

    Step 5: Neck highlights

Emphasize that the neck is a cylindrical shape by putting a highlight by one of its sides. Finish the

collar bones and highlight the shoulders.

Tip: Close your eyes slightly and look at your drawing. Check If the main color you see is the one of

the skin. If its not, and you still can see a lot of the shadows and highlights- you have overworked it.

Step 6: How to draw chest shadows

One of the most frequent mistakes when drawing the chest is to cast the shadow under, while

shadows are actually placed on the breasts. There is still a small amount of shadow underneath, but

if you want to draw them looking real the shadows should be drawn more or less like shown on theexample illustration.

Darken the area of the armholes and blend it with the rest of the skin.

You can also cast delicate shadows on the torso details if you like to have them in your fashion

    drawings.

    Step 7: Chest highlights

Draw the highlights only at their upper half of the chests. Keep the shape of the highlights rounded,

    curved and relatively small.

Add light to the torso details as shown.

Step 8: Shadows on the arms

Arms in fashion are not very detailed when it comes to rendering the skin. Just cast a shadow

following the outline of the arm from its part closer to the body.

Tip: Try not to touch the outline with your shadow tone, but still keep the shadow very close to it.

This will help you build more 3D look of your drawing. Goes the same for legs and arm.

Make the same as in the previous step, but with the opposite side of the arms. Make sure you have

enough base color skin between the shadows and the light.

Step 10: Draw the legs shadows

Next comes drawing shadows on the legs. Look how they kind of repeat the outline of the leg, but

the shadow gets a little bit thinner when reaching the knee area. Cast tiny, short shadows in the

highest inner part of the tights and around the bone of the calves if you like to have it drawn.

    Step 11: Legs highlights

In order to make it look realistic you need to add highlights too. Work on the inner part of the tights,

the knee and a little bit on the calves. Dont touch the outline.

Step 12: Draw shadows to the hands and feet

Hands and feet in fashion illustrations are very specific. They have very few detail. Cast shadows to

    Why outlines?

Fashion illustrations need outlines, because without them drawings often look somehow undefined

and unfinished. Outlines help the drawing stands out and keep viewer s attention.

    How to begin?

One of the worst things that can ever happen to your illustration is to have it perfectly sketched and

at the moment you begin to colour it the pencil laid below smudges. Ordinary pencils smudge (if you

use markers) or are visible in not a very pleasant way (if you use aquarelle). Thats why I recommend

you to trace the fashion sketch using a tone that even if it smudges it will still look all right like light

brown shades- you still can see the sketch while you render it, but after youre finished there is no

ugly, non-erasable grey lines below .

First to color or first to outline the sketch?

Generally speaking, it depends on the case and the media you prefer to use.

I use markers and more frequently its easier to lay down the fill color then to outline the shapes,

compared to trying not to cross the boundaries you have set.

Except for the times you want to be really, really precise with small details for instance, I

  • 7/30/2019 Drawing the Model

    116/154

recommend you to colour the shape and to outline it later.

What colour should the outline be?

Look around you- is anything outlined in black? Black outline should be applied only to dark grey or

    black objects.

For any other case use a colour that is few shades darker than your fill colour. Take a piece of the

same paper you use for the illustration and try on different options before applying the outline to

    your original image.

    I miss the right colour?

Use the old trick with the greys. A light grey and a dark grey pens are must have for the cases you

lack proper outline colour. The first goes perfectly with white, light blue and green , pink and yellow.

The second one can save you when you miss purple, dark blue and green, brown shades.

Use those wisely and always try the results on a separate piece of paper before applying the colour

    on your illustration.

What to use when outlining white?

  • 7/30/2019 Drawing the Model

    117/154

The best solution that Ive come to is to use a light grey pen. It seems more natural on the paper and

you dont lose the whites lightness as it happens when you outline it with black.

    Step 1: Draw your design

need it soft and semitransparent when drawing white fabrics.

    Step 2: Define the shading

Decide where are the places you will draw the shadows and wrinkles of the clothes when using the

Clay method. In this case this is under the breasts and at the torso outlines. The shadows will also

    contour the skirt folds.

Tip: "Clay method" is when you close your eyes and imagine you were creating the dress out of clay.

The places where you move your handsAWAY from you are the shadows and those places where

you move your hands IN - are the highlights.

    119/154

    Step 3: First layer shadows

Put a second layer of very light gray over the spots you defined in step 2. This shade layer should

make the pencil outlines much thicker - as shown in the picture below.Shadows will be similar as

    Step 5: Last shadows layer

This is the darkest layer. The color should be medium gray. If you go darker the final result may look

as a gray dress, instead of white one. Be very delicate with this layer and make only few short lines

Learning how to draw boots might be very useful for designing your winter

collections and developing some great-looking fashion sketches. Follow this step-by step tutorial andfind out an easy way to give your models warm and beautiful footwear for the season.

    Step 1 Setting the guidelines

Before drawing the shoes you should leave enough space to draw the foot correctly. From the floor

up pull about one head height line, that (if continued) would serve as a Centerline of the leg. Mark

the middle point of this segment.

  • 7/30/2019 Drawing the Model

    136/154

Step 2 Shoes in profile and front view

If you see the shoes from the front: just surround the Centerline with an ellipse.

If you see the shoes from the side: draw a tilted line with the same length, that crosses the leg

Centerline in the middle. The closer to Vertical you draw it, the higher the heel of the boots will

be.Surround the line with an ellipse.

    Step 3

If you see the boot from the front: Draw an horizontal ellipse in the bottom of the first one. It should

be slightly wider than it and inclined as shown in illustration. This ellipse marks the toes.

Tip: When drawing feet and shoes always make sure you give a slight tilt of the toes from the little

toe towards the largest toe, which is the thumb.

  • 7/30/2019 Drawing the Model

    137/154

If you draw the boots in profile draw a circle in the upper side for the heel and an ellipse in the

bottom for the toes. Connect those with an "S"curved line.

    Step 4: The ankles

If you see the shoes from the front side: draw two little circles that will hint the ankles and connect

them with the toes. Notice how the inner side of the instep is more convex that the outer one.

Tip: The ankles should not be drawn at the same level. An important detail for successful fashion

illustration is to draw the inner ankle higher than the outer.

To draw the profile boot: Mark the ankle close to the Centerline of the leg and connect the calf with

the foot. The most bulged part of the instep is the one that is at the same level ad the heel.See

necessary if the model of the boots is without zipper or laces, to be able to be put on. Note that the

boot seen from the side has this lineinclined from the back towards the front side.

Step 6 Add realism and volume

Crinkle the boundaries of the boots making the wrinkles bigger at the higher and smaller at the

lower end. Make sure they are with various sizes and fullness, so the illustration looks natural.

Curve the line of the upper end and make it wrap around the leg the same way as was shown in

From the ground up draw a Centerline thats a half-head long. If you are not drawing a whole figure,

but just the foot it should be 4x the width of the leg just over the ankle.

Use a small point to mark the middle of the line.

    Step 2 2:35

Imagine the clock. If the Centerline was its arms the time would be 12:30. Right?

Now draw a second guideline with the same length as the first and make it show 2:35. Close it within

an ellipse as shown in the illustration.

Tip: This tutorial is about drawing really high stiletto heels. If you want some more flat, comfortable

ones all you have to do is move the clock arms to 3:40 or whichever height you prefer.

  • 7/30/2019 Drawing the Model

    146/154

    Step 3 Heel and Toes

In the upper corner of the ellipse draw a circle. Use the ellipses size as reference.

In the lower corner draw an ellipse that touches the Centerline. The 2:35 oclock line should pass

through the middle of the ellipse. This is for the toes.

  • 7/30/2019 Drawing the Model

    147/154

    Step 4

Connecting the circle and the ellipse draw the foot arch. Note that under the heel the curve is

    straight.

Mark the place of the ankle. Its situated closer to the Centerline than to legs outline.

  • 7/30/2019 Drawing the Model

    148/154

    Step 5

Draw the ankle and join the heel with the leg. Under the heel draw a triangle that will be used as

    guideline for the spike heel.

Pull a horizontal line from the heel circles midway and mark the middle of the toes ellipse.

  • 7/30/2019 Drawing the Model

    149/154

    Step 6

Draw the heel. Use the little triangle to help you with the arch and make sure the heel is

    perpendicular to the ground surface.

Use the lines from step 5 to build the instep curve. The line pulled from the circle should mark the

most bulging out section of the instep.
