“How do you define confidence? The Oxford dictionary defines confidence as: “the feeling or belief that one can rely on someone or

something; firm trust.”

Jesus Christ is our great high priest and we are to draw near to Him with confidence to the throne of grace (Hebrews 4:16a). This requires a step of faith, trusting that the Lord desires good things for us and keeps His word. This can be especially difficult when we face challenges that can test our faith.

“Let us hold tightly without wavering to the hope we affirm, for God can be trusted to keep His promise.”

– Hebrews 10:23.

Our act of obedience to draw near to His throne of grace in times of need comes with

a promise: that we will receive His mercy and find grace [to help in time of need]. I pray that the following testimonies encourage you to take steps of faith in drawing near to Christ in times of triumph and in times of difficulties. Let us be men and women of God who boldly draw near with confidence to the Lord.

We also thank you for your partnership and prayers! As we close out the year, we ask you to prayerfully consider you financial support, your commitment to serve, and purpose to pray for His work through CVM in 2016.

PrayPray that those who serve in missions will confidently rely on Christ as they serve.

Pray for students that they might draw near to the Lord during challenging times.

Pray for veterinary professionals to trust in Jesus Christ as they take steps of faith in the workplace.

Dr. Kit FlowersCVM President

In this winter issue of the Christian Veterinarian, we’re focusing on drawing near to Christ with confidence in times of triumph and difficulties. Whether you serve in missions or as a witness for Him in your practice, we must trust in His promises as we step out in faith.

Your support helps us share the gospel around the world.

2015 Financial ReportBy Dr. Kit Flowers, CVM President

“Not that I seek the gift itself, but I seek the profit which increases to your account. But I have received everything in full, and have an abundance….” - Phil 4:16-17a

We are grateful for your continued partnership in ministry and the ways the Lord has worked through your generosity to draw hearts and lives near to Him. The act of giving is a testimony of God’s work in our hearts and brings glory to Him.

Our fiscal year ends each June and the following months are an important time for CVM as we prepare for auditors and compile the reports of how God is working, that we might share those whose authority we serve under and those whom we partner with in His kingdom work through CVM. The following chart demonstrates the ministry distribution of the $5,446,000 in financial

support received in fiscal year 2015. We rejoice for the profit which increased to the heavenly accounts of those who participated, prayed, and served.

CVM staff and volunteers served faithfully in long-term missions, short-term missions, student ministry, and ministry in the workplace to show and share the love of Christ in word and deed. We seek to gather as best we can a testimony of the lives impacted through those ministry programs.

As you read this, would you consider pausing for a few moments of reflection and praise for the incredible ways God is at work? We do praise His Holy Name! Would you also, in that frame of mind, ask Him what He is asking of you as we move through our current fiscal year?

323,376 people were challenged to live a life of worship

43,574 individuals heard a purposed presentation of the Gospel

4,430 people accepted Christ

The Lord often calls us to step out of our comfort zone where we must lean on Him for the strength to do as He asks. Throw yourself into the arms of Christ with confidence that He will go before you and bless your obedience to His leading.

Every so often a man would come to my clinic with his dachshund. He drove an antique Cadillac with cowboy boots sticking out from the front bumper as if some poor guy had somehow gotten in the way and, “oh, well…”. I knew his reputation—he had his share of problems and a fowl mouth to match, yet he had never sworn in my presence and was obviously very fond of his dog.

One day he came to the clinic with his dog, and I began some small talk. I had no idea where this innocuous beginning would lead.

“How are you doing, Shorty?” I asked.

“Oh, not very well. I’m going to the Veterans Hospital tomorrow, and it’s not looking good. My lungs.”

Then from inside of me came this voice, “Ask him if you can pray for him.” That was quickly followed by my own thought, “He will cuss me up one side and down the other.” The second imperative was the same, “Ask him if you can pray for him.” “No, I don’t think so. Is this the Lord?”

With the third, “Ask him if you can pray for him,” I was somewhat sure it was the Lord, as it certainly was not me. Deciding to proceed, I asked. Shorty was sitting down and raised his head to look up at me and said, “Would you do that?” With one hand placed on his shoulder, and a bit of deepened faith and the help of the Holy Spirit, I prayed.

Three weeks later my husband and I were walking toward a restaurant when we saw Shorty quickly approaching. “Ms. Ann, Ms. Ann! You are my angel, and I told everyone at the hospital that I was better because of you! All of the nurses heard about my angel!” Of course, it was not me, nor an angel. God did what only He could do in bringing healing to Shorty’s body.

A few years later, I got a call from Shorty saying he needed my prayers again. I silently asked God for wisdom as I said, “Shorty, I need to ask you a question.”

He said, “Yes, Ma’am, anything.”

“Do you know Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior?”

“Yes, Ma’am, I absolutely do.”

A few months later he passed away, forgiven and redeemed.

Before the funeral I received a call from the gentleman presiding at the service, who was his brother in-law and a pastor from a town 3 hours away. He said that he had

heard a story, but didn’t want to share it at the funeral unless he could verify it. It was the story I just shared with you. As it turns out, Shorty’s brother in-law had witnessed to him for many years and had no idea that he had become a Christian.

After our conversation, I wondered who Shorty had told, and if there was fruit in his life. God graciously answered that question. After the funeral, his daughter, whom I had not met previously, came to me and said, “I just want you to know my dad came to me and asked me to forgive him for not being

a father to me and for not providing for me when I was growing up.”

The story continued—this remarkable woman and her husband have since become very close friends to my husband and I. Last year, her husband also accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior.

Who knew the wonderful ramifications of one scary act of obedience? What is God asking you to do that will require you to trust Him completely and step out of your comfort zone?

During my vision/scouting trip to Bolivia in 2011, I had a dream. I dreamt that I had fallen asleep in a recliner in a simply furnished room and that the door to the house had been left open. In the dream, I woke up feeling that something was in the room with me and I had the uncomfortable feeling that I was being watched. As I wiped the sleep from my eyes, I saw a large, black wolf circling the recliner. I attempted to scream for help but no sound left my mouth. The wolf continued to circle the recliner, yet never attacked or harmed me

– he simply circled the chair. It appeared as if he was unable to get any closer. Suddenly, I woke up.

The next night I had the same exact dream, except this time the wolf tried to get closer, but he couldn’t. Instantly, after the second night’s dream, I began to ask God what these dreams meant. I felt the Holy Spirit telling me that the Lord was going to take care of me in Bolivia as a long-term missionary. The devil would try to hinder the work and cause harm or injury to me while I worked to proclaim the Gospel, but the attacks and plans of the devil were limited because God was, is, and would be my Protector. I received a great amount of confidence in Him and boost to my faith from the dreams and it helped solidify my calling to Bolivia.

From the very moment I arrived, I have been confident that the Lord called me here. I am

actively engaged proclaiming the Gospel as a missionary while fulfilling my passion of teaching veterinary students. Serving as a long-term field staff member with Christian Veterinary Mission has helped me to grow in my faith and use the gifts and strengths He has given me to make an impact in this remote part of South America, all the while growing in reliance and faith in Him. It has not been an easy, completely joy-filled two-and-a-half years since I moved to Bolivia, but Christ has been faithful. I can walk in confidence while serving here, or wherever God may call me next, knowing that I serve a faithful God. His promises truly are forever and He completes that which He says He will complete.

In this, I am reminded of the calling of the prophet Jeremiah. He was a young teen when he was called to be a prophet to God’s chosen people. He was not

schooled in the theories debate, did not attend seminary, he did not have vast life experiences upon which to call, and he did not have a place of influence within his culture. Yet, God used him despite these and other limitations. In many ways, before entering the field, I saw myself in

His promises truly are forever and He completes that which He says He will complete.

Coalson has been serving with CVM in Bolivia for 3 years where he partners with VETRED-CVM’s Latin American associate organization.

He teaches courses in veterinary medicine and technical English at the Universidad Autonoma del Beni which is located in Trinidad. His heart and passion is to work with university students to see them excel professionally and spiritually.

Coalson was initially introduced to CVM through the student ministry Christian Veterinary Fellowship (CVF) at Texas A&M University. During his time in veterinary school he served on missions trips which planted the desire to serve overseas long-term.

the shoes of Jeremiah. I was a relatively recent graduate from veterinary school, single, and still building my knowledge of veterinary medicine and how to walk out my faith as a Christian veterinarian when I embarked on the journey to Trinidad, Bolivia. We find the story of Jeremiah in the first chapter of his book, verses 4-10:

“I knew you before I formed you in your mother’s womb. Before you were born I set you apart and appointed you as my prophet to the nations.” “O Sovereign LORD,” I said, “I can’t speak for you! I’m too young!” The LORD replied, “Don’t say,

‘I’m too young,’ for you must go wherever I send you and say whatever I tell you. 8And don’t be afraid of the people, for I will be with you and will protect you. I, the LORD, have spoken!” 9Then the LORD reached out and touched my

mouth and said, “Look, I have put my words in your mouth!”’ (New Living Translation)

This passage has served as one of the foundations of my faith as a young long-term field staff member with CVM and has helped me live out my faith in many ways. First, it helps me remember the starting point in our faith journey is always God

– He is the bedrock and foundation of our faith. It is true that living overseas has its stresses outside of the normal stress of living in the United States. The stresses of living in a cultural context that is often dramatically different than the U.S. is not easy. Many times I do not have the words to speak or know what actions to take in a given circumstance. The only reliance I have is the promise of God that He “will be with [me] and will protect [me]!”

Sometimes it is hard to believe words on a page and doubt can quickly come in and disrupt our thinking—causing us to doubt whether God is real and will do what He has promised.

But, not only does God promise to be with us and protect us, He also desires to share His plans and purposes with us. Amos 3:7 says, “Indeed, the Sovereign Lord never does anything until He reveals His plans to His servants the prophets” (NLT). God has great plans— plans much bigger than anything I could ever dream of for the lives of the students and veterinarians here in Bolivia. It is up to me to communicate with God through reading His Word and spending time in prayer and communion

with Him. Through these things I not only come to know the heart of God, but He also shares with me how I can participate in His plan here in Bolivia. This gives me confidence as a missionary serving the One, true Living God. I am not serving overseas aimlessly wandering here and there; God has plans and purposes for me here and I get to participate in those! What other god is there who actively invites the participation of his or her followers? As Christians, we should gain much confidence in our daily walk and the expression of our Christian faith, knowing

that God desires to give us the blue prints to expand His Kingdom here on earth.

One of the greatest confidence boosters I have is watching my colleagues, both here in Bolivia and around the world, serving with CVM and other mission agencies. I am able to see missionaries, not perfect, but persistent in sharing the love of God with others in different cultural contexts. Here in Bolivia, I have learned much from Bill and Heidi Janecke who have served with CVM more than 15 years. Their solid faith and perseverance gives me confidence that I can overcome the cultural hurdles and obstacles I have and continue to face. Their knowledge of the culture and people give me confidence that I can reach my friends and neighbors for Christ. Hebrews chapter 12 talks about the great cloud of witnesses that have gone before us. The Janecke’s are just one example of the “great cloud of witnesses” that I am blessed to call friends and mentors and from whom I glean confidence to keep persevering.

These are just a few of the things that help me walk in confidence while serving as a long-term field staff member with CVM. This is a journey that I could not accomplish on my own; however, with God by my side and my daily reliance and dependence on Him, I know I can live out Philippians 4:13, “For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength” (NLT). I can be an effective witness for Him here in Trinidad, Bolivia while showing the love of Christ through veterinary medicine to veterinary professionals in this corner of the world.

But, not only does God promise to be with us and protect us, He also desires to share His plans and purposes with us.

“Let us then draw near to the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.” -Hebrews 4: 16

Our daughter Jodi is certified as a river rafting guide on the Deschutes River. She had to learn all the rapids by name, memorize the best approaches, study which routes through each rapid were the safest, and which routes had resulted in serious danger or even death.

She diligently trained until she was qualified for certification. Part of her training was to learn how to throw a rope bag at a small target so that she could throw a rope to someone who fell out of the raft. She had to learn how to grab them by the shoulder straps and heave them back up into the raft. She learned the

commands she’d use as a guide, such as “all forward!” when she wanted everyone to row forward to hit a rapid at just the right angle. “All back” means everyone rows back to catch an eddy out of the current.

“Hit the deck” means duck; maybe that hornets’ nest is best left undisturbed, or that “sweeper” (low branch) could scrub you right off the raft.

Perching high in the back, she steers, calls commands, sometimes rowing, digging deep—depending on the skills, trust, and cooperation of the people in her raft that day.

Approaching Box Car Rapids, they can already hear its ravenous roaring as they round the last corner on the river. Headed straight for opposite the cliff wall, Jodi nevertheless shouts, “All forward!”

Christian Veterinarian | Winter 201514 15Draw Near | cvmusa.org

People in the raft have to trust her. It looks like they should be rowing “all back!” to avoid a crash. They have to believe that she knows what she’s doing, despite appearances. But she’s been there before; she knows the current will sweep their raft safely to the side, that it’s the right approach for the best way to navigate Box Car’s roaring, foaming, and turbulent waters.

Serving in missions is similar in nature. The rapids have names like: Terrorism Vortex, Persecution Drop, Ebola Chute, Desert Kiln, Demonic Twister, Insect Entrée, Homesick Falls, and Co-worker Narrows.

God knows how to approach them; He gives the right commands for navigation. He’s been there before and He knows the best way through any obstacle. He’s steering, sometimes digging deep to make up for our weaknesses and He promises, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” When we fall, He knows how to toss us the rope and how to heave us back aboard the raft.

So what happens in missions? God calls us away from the shore then He bids us to get out of our boat—to leave behind our illusion of safety, our comfortable life,

our familiar culture, and our family and friends. He sends us, as He sent Jesus.

“Come! Follow me! All forward!”

But where is He? Where’s He headed? He’s walking on water with nothing apparently holding Him up and He’s walking straight toward the cliff to His death—or so it appears.

Then He explains, “He who seeks to save his life will lose it. He who gives his life for My sake and the Gospel’s will find it” (Luke 9:24). It only looks like you’re heading for the cliffs and rapids; He knows the currents. He brings us out the other side, shouting for joy, resurrected with Him.

To even begin to serve in missions, we need to draw near to God with confidence. This is the confidence that He knows what He’s doing, He knows the way; that He’s been there before and that He will never leave us. The confidence that He doesn’t change and that He loves the lost; that He understands our weaknesses—and gives us mercy instead of what we deserve, and grace for every rapid beyond our own resources.

We know space (length, width, height); but God is outside of space – immeasurable and infinite. We know time; but God is outside of time—eternal. Yet Jesus, infinite and eternal, comes to our time and space and He understands our weaknesses. He

“was tempted in every way, just as we are—yet was without sin” (Hebrews 4:15).

Kate McCord writes, “When we go to a dangerous place, we give up the comforts, affluence, and relative safety of our lives at home. We lose our treasured supports: the presence of families, friends, and church communities; our clothing, language, and lifestyles; access to privacy and rest. The sacrifices are real. The losses leave us disoriented and grieving. Yet in our losses, weaknesses, and extreme vulnerability, we lean into Christ and know Him in ways we couldn’t have if we had held onto all our small securities. ”

Through Jesus, God draws close, like a father. “Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you” (James 4:8). A little Ethiopian child may fear to approach any big person, but that same child will run to their father crying, “Abiyae!” with confidence. Our Father loves, understands, and gives grace to help in time of need.

While my family and I served in southwest Ethiopia, we were not frightened when the Bunna took a whole week to discuss whether to kill us. It should have been a panic-inducing experience! But the Lord gave grace to help in time of need: His inexplicable peace and even joy in the crisis. His vast resources were sufficient, not ours.

“Jesus calls us to dangerous places because He loves people who live in dangerous

places. He loves the perpetrators of vio¬lence and the victims of violence. He loves the children and the old, the men and the women, the rich and the poor...the world is full of frightened and frightening men and women whom God loves with a love so rich and so deep that no matter what they do, He still wants to bring them home. ”

Only through Jesus, the Son of God, can we draw near to the throne of grace with confidence! What a message to take to the nations! We can trust Him as our Guide. He’s been there before, knows the safest ways through any obstacle. As we obey His commands, we can rest in the confidence that He is unchanging, sovereign, merciful, good… and gives grace for every Box Car Rapid we’ll ever face.

“All forward!”

Where is the Lord Leading You?“And then he told them, ‘Go into all the world and preach the Good News to everyone.’” –Mark 16:15

Is Christ calling you to step out in faith and serve Him through veterinary medicine cross-culturally?

We have an incredible opportunity for you to be in true partnership with an indigenous church in northeast India, and to reach out to their Hindu and Buddhist neighbors through your skills in veterinary medicine.

Would you prayerfully join a CVM long-term field staff and a small team of national Nepali speaking Indian believers as they carry out this mission?

There is a need for assistance in three of their main areas of ministry: animal health training, the sustainable livelihoods program, and a training and demonstration farm.

The goal of the animal health training is to develop and implement a curriculum, and train women and farmers in animal hus-bandry. The church would also like help in expanding their current livestock revolving loan distribution program, and establishing a small training and demonstration farm to utilize as a vocational training center.

Could the Lord be leading you to be a part of the ministry in northeast India?

We are looking for veterinarians, vet technicians, agronomists, and horti-culturalists—both singles and families are welcome to join the team! There are opportunities for both long-term (two or more years) service; as well as for some volunteers who can serve from 3-6 months.

If you feel that the Lord may be leading you to join this team and serve in northeast India, please contact [email protected].

Give a gift in memory of a client’s or friend’s beloved pet. The grieving owner receives a beautiful sympathy card, acknowledging their loss and announcing your gift. Comfort those who are grieving with the knowledge that their loss will allow veterinarians to help others in need.

How to Start a Christian Professional FellowshipBy: Dr. Steve Swaim & Dr. John Nelson

Professional Christian Veterinary Fel-lowship groups (PCVF) are a great op-portunity to connect with other Christian professionals in various regions to grow deeper in faith, encourage each other, share ideas on witnessing to clients, serve together in the community, and challenge each other to grow.

In early 2014, Dr. Steve Swaim, a retired veterinarian professor, and Dr. John Nelson, a private practitioner, felt called to develop a local PCVF group in South Central Kansas. They reached out to Dr. Melissa Cheeks, CVM’s North Central Regional Representative, who provided contact information for close to 20 veterinarians in the area who may be interested in meeting and fellowshipping together.

Everyone was interested, but the group initially had no place to meet. Securing a regular place to gather would prove a challenge in the months ahead, with the group moving from its first location in a colleague’s church, to a more central location at the Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Hospital in Wichita—a far more central and convenient location. However, due to some scheduling conflicts, the group found themselves on the move again, this time to another church. Although all of these were acceptable meeting locations, the PCVF group found the best atmosphere for fellowship was at a restaurant. So the

group meets regularly for discussion, prayer, and to share a meal.

Early on in the course of the group, the direction and purpose was regularly dis-cussed—what would they do? How would they serve? In those first few months,

the group learned more about CVM and the opportunities within the organization, going deeper into the purpose of student ministry, and even hearing from a prac-titioner involved in short-term missions. After much prayer, it was decided that the PCVF would serve as a support group for its members: encouraging and chal-lenging each other to solve veterinary medicine/practice issues from a Chris-tian perspective.

Right now they have a “core” group of 7 or 8 veterinarians and technicians. Some people have come to 1 or 2 meetings over the past 1 ½ years, and some have never attended any meetings. However, each month the invitation goes out to the original list of about 20 people. They

gather together and have food, fellowship, laughter, and a time of praying together. This has presented the best and most relaxed atmosphere for the group to get to know each other better.

As the group has grown, it’s actively found ways to support its members and serve the community in South Central Kansas. These include having adopted a

CVM long-term missionary, presenting at CVM student groups, and most recently participating at the 2015 North Central Real Life/Real Impact.

…encouraging and challenging each other to solve veterinary medicine/practice issues from a Christian perspective.

1. Contact Christian Veterinary Mission, and get in touch with your Regional Rep-resentative to discover opportunities to serve fellow professional Christian vet-erinarians, missionaries and those in your community.

2. Pray for those attending, and that God would have present the people He wants to be present. Don’t be discouraged with a low attendance.

3. Involve the group in planning; pray, talk, and see together where the Lord leads.

4. If you are starting a group, nominate a few people to champion the group’s purpose and direction and to uphold it in prayer.

5. Stay positive and keep persisting, even if attendance or interest is low. Keep send-ing meeting notices and invitations, and trust in the Lord to provide.

6. Pray always!

Perhaps the Lord is calling you to be missional through your profession, and to start your own Professional Christian Veterinary Fellowship. If so, here’s six ideas to help you get started, and draw near to the throne of grace with confidence:

CVM’s mission is to challenge, empower and facilitate veterinary professionals to serve others by living out their Christian faith.

Our purpose as an organization is to walk alongside Christians in the veterinary com-munity whose desire is to bring glory to God through the use of their professional skills. It is our honor and privilege to pray with, talk with, encourage, equip, mentor and pro-vide resources and opportunities for men and women to follow God’s call in their life, whether serving in their own community or cross-culturally.

Animals are a bridge to relationship. Whether at a clinic in urban America or, the country-side of Mongolia, a veterinary school in Bo-livia or the Cherokee Nation, relationships are formed over the care of an animal. Trust is built, hearts are shared, and a seed is planted for the Kingdom of Christ.
