• Do Now: Define the art elements/design principles

Still Life Assessment

• Draw the objects as you see them.• Do not re-arrange them.• Try your best to represent the object’s size, shape, texture,

value and three-dimensional quality.

• Use the full space of your paper to compose your image.• Use the full period to draw as much as you can.• Draw how ever you feel comfortable.• Use only the pencil you were given.

Wed 9-9

• Aim: How can you begin drawing from observation?

• Do Now: In your own words, describe what you think makes a “good” drawing.

Which image is more effective?

Blind Contour/Blind Drawing

• Part 1: Drawing through your senses. • Place your hand into the paper bag, feel the object in the

bag.• As you feel the object, draw it. • You can also draw from memory.

• Part 2: Take object out of the bag, place it on the table and draw it using a blind contour drawing technique. Keep your pencil on the paper, do not lift it, draw using one continuous line. Keep your eyes on the object and don’t look down at your paper!

Drawing observationally begins with LOOKING!

Thurs 9-10• Aim: How can you render a form?

• Do Now: Create a list of shapes and their corresponding 3D forms.

Homework: All supplies are due tomorrow.

Think about what simple form other forms can fit into! That’s the implied form!

Now....once you shade these in and stop using outlines your work will appear even more three-dimensional!

• Aim: How does shading create the illusion of three-dimensional form?

• Do Now: Create an example of a gradation on the provided scrap paper.

Highlight: Where light hits the object first, the lightest part

Crest Shadow: Darkest part on the object

Cast Shadow: The shadow that is cast by the object

Reflective Light: Light that bounces back onto the object

Review!

When shading it is important to recognize a few key elements:

1. The shape of the form you are drawing: is it a curved surface, or hard-edged surface?•Curved surfaces have gradual value changes•Hard edged surfaces have contrasting value changes.

2.How many different shapes of values can you see?Look for dark, medium and light areas. What shapes are they making?

3. Contrasting valuesYou are able to see edges of forms because of the contrasting values.

Try not to place the same values next to each other, or else you will not see the difference in the shape/form.

Make outlines disappear!

Graphite Pencils:

Softer pencils blend more easily

The higher the number, with a corresponding “B” letter, the softer and darker the pencil is.

The higher the number, with a corresponding “H” the harder and lighter the pencil value is.
