Assignments, Tests, Quizzes and Final Exam Schedule, with percentage/points of grade:METHODS OF INSTRUCTIONFundamental Techniques

During class, we will discuss the fundamental techniques as listed in the course objectives. Demonstrations will be followed by in-class work time where you will complete exercises using the demonstrated technique(s).

Power Point Lectures

Instructional images and examples from Art History will provide a broad array of images that will amplify and enhance student understanding of given objectives. It is important to have a substantial knowledge of imagery to create personal work with greater depth and vision.

Class Critique

After we have completed our projects, the class will gather to discuss our work. By looking and talking about our work and the way in which others perceive it, we will come to understand the essentials of visual communication.

METHODS OF EVALUATION1. Homework Homework consists of practice drawings you will execute in your sketchpads and sketch books. Practice is essential to developing your skills and you will find that progress is difficult without it.

2. Projects Drawing projects will be assigned to be completed over the course of a week or longer. These assignments will require you to apply demonstrated techniques and to think of your work and the way in which meaning can be communicated visually. We will have a few mid-sized projects and one final project, all of which we will discuss as class progresses. A complete list of class projects is found under “Tentative Schedule” below.

GRADING PROCEDURES

Each assignment will have a specific set of stated objectives that must be fulfilled upon completion.

Three primary factors determine the grade on any given project:

C-P-O=Concept/Professionalism/Originality

1.Concept: Were the stated objectives of the project realized? Did the student utilize design elements and principles to create cohesive and unified composition? Did the student demonstrate an ability to understand the conceptual requirements of each assigned project and a willingness/ability to adhere to standard guidelines?

2. Professionalism: Did the student use assigned materials/techniques to best advantage? Was the project finished completely and thoroughly in the time given? Did the student demonstrate sufficient technical skill to produce finished presentations in keeping with professional industry and gallery standards?

3. Originality: Are the designs innovative and original, or simply rote copies of the examples given? Did the student demonstrate an ability to compose design elements with a sufficient degree of originality and creativity?

GRADING SCALEA=90-100 B=80-89 C=70-79 D=60-69 F=59 and below

A: work of outstanding quality indicating a full, as well as a successful resolution. Moreover, this work challenges and even transcends the limits of the problem(s) and learning objectives as defined. "A" work is not merely competent, it is daring.

B: work exhibiting insight into and understanding of objectives and the ideas expressed, but without a full and/or polished resolution of them.

C: work gives evidence of only partial understanding and/or exhibits very little refinement.

D: work showing almost no understanding or evidence of an effort to try to understand given objectives.

F: work that appears mindless (without direction, understanding and/or any evidence of caring).

PLEASE COMPLETE ALL GIVEN ASSIGNMENTSFailure to complete an assignment will result in a 0 grade being given, which is far worse than an F of 59%. It is much preferred to hand in projects late than to not hand them in at all.

Most assignments are worth 100 points. To determine your final grade, I add all the points you have earned and then divide this number by the total number of points possible.

Grading:

4. Late arrivals or early departures count as 1/3 of an absence. Early departures in excess of 30min will be counted as unexcused absences.5. Excused absences due to extenuating circumstances or family emergencies must be verified. An e-mail the day of/before your absence explaining your circumstances is usually sufficient.6. More than 3 unexcused absences will result in a failing (F) grade. For example, this means that even 3 unexcused absences and 1 tardy will result in a failing grade.7. Family and personal vacations DO NOT COUNT AS EXCUSED ABSENCES. I will NOT administer make-up tests for these absences. 8. STUDENTS WHO DO NOT ATTEND THE FIRST CLASS THEY ARE ENROLLED IN WILL BE DROPPED FROM THE COURSE. Unless they have proof of extenuating circumstances and/or call or e-mail me prior to the class meeting.9. Our final class meeting, is…..our FINAL CLASS MEETING, and no work will be accepted afterwards. Ever. No matter what the circumstances* (*unless you have arranged for an “incomplete” grade)

Electronic Device Use and Email Policy: Cell-phones, laptops, electronic devices, must be turned off during class time NO TEXTING !!!!!! NO EXCEPTIONS!!!!!!

Page 6: Drawing 1 Syllabus

Palm Beach State CollegeCourse Syllabus – Classroom Course

1. Figure Ground

Utilizing pencil, and then pen, an assignment in which basic shapes and space are isolated to produce a representation of negative space. Special attention to compositional issues including balance and form.

DATE: tba

2. Contour Line Still Life

Utilizing pencil and pen, students create a contour line drawing of a simple still life. Special attention is paid to line weight, composition, shape, and methods for creating spatial depth. Additionally, line quality and professionalism are emphasized.

DATE: tba

3. Pareidolia

Utilizing pencil and pen, this project deals with generating patterns and gestures with multiple approaches to pen drawing. Students are encouraged to experiment with various methods for creating value and pattern using hatching, cross-hatching, repetition, and other techniques. Additionally, compositional unity and design theory are explored by forming a "face" from the line experimentation.

DATE: tba

4. Pattern and Boxes

Utilizing pen and pencil, this project deals with first exploring methods of approaching compositional/spatial issues in the representation of simple box shapes placed at varying angles. Once compositional/spatial issues have been solved using basic linear perspective strategies, students apply pattern and design to selected planar areas to create a richer more vibrant composition.

DATE: tba.

5. Stippling

The stippling project uses a pre-plotted "map" of a face in which students must fill in corresponding areas of value by stippling or cross-hatching in pen in order to create the illusion of shading/chiaroscuro.

DATE: tba.

6. Charcoal Value Studies

Switching to charcoal, students produce several "value" scales with each type of material in order to master the blending techniques and to become familiar with the properties of each type of charcoal. Additionally students produce an 11 square scale of value from white to black as gradually and convincingly as possible.

DATE: tba

7. Simple Still Life

Using charcoal, students first create a rough sketch in vine, and then fill in the highlights and shadows of a simple still life. Special attention is paid to the role of light and shadow in creating the illusion of volume. Students are encouraged to stay away from "cartoon" lines and produce convincing representations by indicating subtle shifts in value.

DATE: tba

8. 2-Ppint Perspective "Floating Modules"

Template Date - July 2013 6

Page 7: Drawing 1 Syllabus

Palm Beach State CollegeCourse Syllabus – Classroom Course

Using charcoal and tape masking techniques, students employ 2-point perspective to create fanciful/futuristic shapes floating in the compositional space. Complex architectures are explored as well as atmospheric effects. Charcoal is used methodically along with taping in order to produce crisp architectural lines that articulate the various planar surfaces of the students imaginary creation.

DATE: tba

9. Advanced Still Life

Using charcoal, students explore more complex still-life strategies in order to achieve the illusion of texture, fabric, glass, transparency, reflection, complex organic shapes, and complex man-made objects. Special attention is given to composition, lighting, and professionalism.

DATE: tba

10. Old Master Painting Re-interpretation

Using the "Grid" method, students enlarge and copy in charcoal a selected work from the cannon of art history. Creative "interpretations" are encouraged to update the composition in some way and to explore content and meaning within an artwork.

DATE: tba

11. Surrealism and Automatism

Using surrealist de-collage and frottage techniques, students create randomly generated expressionistic works in pen, ink, and charcoal. Additional conscious additions and subtractions are made in order to create fantasy landscapes/compositions based on the flow of unconscious ideas and the imagination.

DATE:tba

12. Tiling Project

Working together, the entire class enlarges 2-3 squares of a large mural style reproduction of an artwork. The finished piece is assembled using a grid method and the entire composition becomes visible.

DATE: tba
