AMENDMENTS OE: THE COURSES AND DEGREES (DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY) RULES
32528/1981 22.2.82
Rule 1 of the Courses and Degrees (Degree of Doctor of
lhilosophy) Rules is amended by omitting the definition of
'candidate" and substituting the following definition:
" 'candidate' means a candidate for the degree;".
t:.. Rule 3 of the Courses and Degrees (Degree of Doctor of
Fhilosophy) Rules is amended by omitting sub-rule (1) and
substituting the following sub-rules:
"(1) Subject to sub-rule (2), a ~erson shall not be
a:imitted as a candidate unless he holds a degree of the
U1iversity or of an institution approved by the Committee.
" ( 1A) Where a person wishes to pursue a full-time course,
tie prescribed authority may aamit him as a candidate.
"(1B) Where a person wishes to pursue a part-time course,
t1e Committee may admit him as a candidate.".
"(1C) Where a person who does not hold a degree wishes to
p;1rsue a full-time course the prescribed authority may admit
him as a candidate, subject to such terms and conditions as
the Committee thinks fit.".
[~;ub-rule (1C) may overcome your query. However it only :rncceeds on the assumption, which is also made i. 1 your 'omnents, that sub-rules ( 1A) and ( 1B) are also the sub-rules under which a person who does not hold a degree is admitted. :: would argue that he is admitted under sub-rule (2). If you agree with my last comment then perhaps sub-rule (2) ahould be amended to make it clear that admissions for a person who does not hold a degree may be made for a fulltime or part-time course. Alternatively it may be necessary to repeal rule 3 and substitute two new rules, one covering entitlement to admission with or without a degree (and who grants that admission) and the other covering admission to full-time or part-time degrees].
3. Rule 5 of the Courses and Degrees (Degree of Doctor of
Pt.ilosophy) Rules i~ amended -
(a) by omitting paragraph (l)(b); and
(b) by omitting sub-rules (3) and (4).
