Since 2005, Dragonfly Designs has been sharing the joy of art and jewelry making with our community in the San Francisco Bay Area. The aim of our family business is to enable children’s creativity through holistic art education.

We believe that artistic expression is crucial to healthy development. Art should be an engaging, tactile, and rewarding experience. Our goal is to create peaceful and inclusive spaces where each child is empowered to make truly unique treasures by hand.

L ANGUAGE IMMERSION THROUGH ART

What better way for your child to engage in the vocabulary of a new language then through tactile engagement with art! Our immersion afterschool classes and camps will expose children to new vocabulary through dynamic modes of self-expression. Our class and camp options are lead by native speakers in the target language in a full immersion environment.

Because there’s no better time for cognitive retention than learning a language at a young age, we offer classes and camps taught in Mandarin and Spanish to children aged 5 to 12. An understanding of art and language expands worldviews and fosters an appreciation for cultural diversity. These classes and camps are appropriate for children who attend immersion schools and would like to practice the target language in the afternoon, or when school is not in session.

Classes

Our newly designed Jewelry Making class begins with the creation of an Art Journal where students will document new techniques learned throughout class. Students will begin with the basics by getting to know the tools of the trade and practicing jewelry making skills such as crimping, measuring and designing their own pieces and patterns. Once the basics have been mastered, students will advance to more complex techniques such as wire work, and stamping & dapping on metal. We use only the highest quality findings, freshwater pearls, and Czech glass beads and work to develop the skills to empower children to independently make their own jewelry long after the jewelry class ends. Learning an art form such as jewelry making comes with numerous benefits, such as improved concentration, mindful thinking, the capability to think about complex ideas and turn them into reality, and works as an excellent stress reducer!

This class will introduce students to the basics of textile and fiber art techniques through age appropriate, tactile textiles projects. Processes such as using scissors, cutting fabric, threading needles, sewing, color theory, dyeing, stamping and fabric painting will be introduced. Learning textiles techniques improves concentration, focus, fine motor skills, manual dexterity and hand eye coordination in a fun, engaging way.

ADVANCED TEXTILES & FIBER ARTS

This class introduces the different aspects of textiles and fiber as a creative medium. While considering the environmental and historical background of fiber arts, students will be learning techniques such as sewing, embroidery, macrame, weaving, indigo and synthetic dyeing, screen printing, wool felting, and crochet. Incorporating open studio time into the curriculum, students will learn to design, plan, and execute their ideas from an abstract notion into a tangible product by combining the skills they have learned. The cognitive benefits of learning fiber arts are plenty - not only does it promote relaxation and mindfulness, it passes on techniques treasured by generations. Students see improved manual dexterity, and practice the ability of seeing through a project for an extended time.

DRAWING/PAINTING/ACRYLIC/WATERCOLOR EXPLORATION

In these weekly hour long sessions, students will play with color & technique as they develop their artistic abilities in various fields such as drawing, watercolor, and acrylic painting. The open studio space encourages kids to bring their own imagination to life while receiving guidance when they need it. They’ll have a chance to experiment with a variety of fun tools for painting and see different techniques in each medium. Give your child a wonderful opportunity to express themselves and build skills for a lifetime of creativity!

Through mindful observation and the application of visual art skills, students are challenged to expand their imagination and express themselves creatively. MAKER’S ART L AB

The Makers’ Art Lab is a unique opportunity for students to develop their skills across a wide array of artistic endeavors focusing on each medium for four weeks. Participants will develop healthy artistic habits and learn advanced textile techniques (such as embroidery, macramé, and crochet), leatherworking and metalsmithing as well as jewelry making techniques. The creative philosophy developed is not just useful for future artists; the holistic approach to art applied in this class develops creative thinking & peer collaboration through project based learning.

Get your groove on with a creative dance class that encourages natural freeform dancing rather than step-by-step routines! Covering genres from ballet to jazz, hip-hop to world and contemporary, kids learn about music as they dance with our provided props. Not only is Creative Dance a fun class, kids are also developing their motor skills, muscle coordination and flexibility as they perform their own choreographed dances. This enriching class immerses children in the rich world of music and dance, allowing them to express their creativity in their own unique style with their peers—just don’t blame it on the boogie!

Students get down and throw down some moves to the beat like their favorite pop stars with our easy-to-follow routines that focuses on hip hop choreography, while also teaching them about the genre’s history. Get breathing with our Toppling Tree Yoga class! Tap into your creativity in a camp filled with art & beading bliss! After an opening hour of yoga poses and friendship building games campers will jump into the artistic process and come away with a brand new collection of gorgeous art & jewelry pieces and the skills to make each one of them! We teach a wide array of art & jewelry techniques not to be found elsewhere. Techniques working with clay, metal, etching, beading, patina, stamping and dapping, mosaics, candle & soap making, painting, tie dye and copper etching may be introduced.

Campers will jump into the artistic process and come away with a brand new collection of gorgeous textile art pieces and the skills to make each one of them! This camp will introduce students to the basics of textile and fiber art techniques. Processes such as embroidery, wool felting, weaving, screen printing, sewing, macrame, Shibori, Batik & tie dyeing, stamping and fabric painting will be introduced. Students will learn to design, plan and execute their ideas from an abstract notion into a tangible product. Boys & Girls ages 7 and up, all levels welcome!
