“So When Do We Actual ly Start the Transi t ion Work?”

This question is one of the most frequently asked in all congregations in transition, and Christ Church, St. Michaels is no exception. In order to answer it as effectively as possible, we need to take a couple of steps back and develop some perspective.

William Bridges, the author of the widely respected “Transitions,” makes the very helpful distinction between Change and Transition. Change is something that happens (perhaps by our direct action; perhaps not) “out there,” in the multi-dimensional environment within which we collectively find ourselves. Transi t ion , on the other hand, is “inner work” of adjusting, adapting, understanding our outlooks and shaping our plans to most effectively address the

changed state within which we find ourselves.

As a longtime student of Congregational Development and Transition, I have often remarked that a congregation actually enters the condition somewhat confusingly known as “Transition” long before its members realize it -- for example, the first time that a rector or associate considers the possibility of ministry somewhere else. Viewed from this distance, it becomes clear that CCSM is already deep in the work of transition, and has been for quite some time -- certainly since the announcement of Mark’s departure -- and that state has been accelerated by my arrival, and even more so by Clelia’s recent departure.

Since my arrival in May/June, the work of transition has largely been informal and “below the radar”-- the crucial process of getting to know each other, of developing the essential foundation that one of my guiding models refers to as “Mutual Trust and Respect.” This arises as we (usually gradually) get to know and come to trust each others’ professional competencies and personal characteristics, as well as our preferences and patterns. These can only develop with experience, and with the reflection on that experience that leads to learning.

Beginning at the Forum on September 25th, and continuing through the series of workshops on Perspectives on Congregational Life (see article elsewhere in this issue of Tidings), we will move to a more formal phase of the transition process -- learning ways to think about congregations in general and CCSM in particular. This process of developing the capacity to think about our life as a congregation is an essential prerequisite to the larger work of Transition.

Still in the future are the elements of the vestry’s nomination process and appointment of a Search Committee, the challenging work of conducting and reporting out the results of a thorough self study, the development of a Parish Profile and a Parish Position Profile, to say nothing of the development of a discernment protocol, the reception of candidate information, and the very demanding work of working through the resumes, portfolios, references, interviews, visits, etc., in the process of the Search Committee’s making its final recommendation to the vestry.

So, the short answer to this favorite question is that “We already are!” -- the longer answer takes the form of an invitation to each and every one of you to participate fully, to communicate freely, to be as involved as you are willing and able, to be good stewards of all that we here at CCSM have received and continue to develop -- Time, Talent and Treasure! (You knew I had to bring Stewardship into this somehow!)

As always, if you have questions or comments about ANY aspects of this, PLEASE ASK!

Thanks!

Are We REALLY Going to Bless Animals Inside the Church? Yes! On October 2nd! In commemoration of St. Francis of Assisi (Oct 4th), we will offer an opportunity to have your favorite animals and their relationship with you blessed in church during the 10:15 am service.

The actual blessing will take place immediately following the sermon, so you can plan when you may want to retrieve your special pet.

Over the years, a wide variety of pets have been blessed in various places, including LOTS of dogs of all sizes (leashes please), cats (very few, usually in boxes), guinea pigs, guppies, tetras and

goldfish, a flying squirrel, as well as assorted snakes, turtles, and other amphibians.

Join us as we recognize the special kind of blessing that our pets so often are! Horse lovers, take heart: Interim Rector John Keydel has promised to go out on the lawn to bless any horse or other large animal that arrives for the event.

Ministries Fair and Clelia’s Farewell Were A Great Success ! – Nancy Masone The food and drink for the occasion provided by the "Event Committee" were so well received that we have included the recipes below -- with many, many thanks to the hard-working committee: Susan Armstrong, Katie Hunnicutt, Lisa Rey, Susan Vail, Susan Kane, Lin Clineburg, and John Masone. Thanks also to the many others who helped out at the event. Below: Stewart Seiple and members of the Hand Bell Choir demonstrating their ministry, and Deacon Clelia’s farewell, as seen by Jeff Hart.

Fruit Smoothie

2 cups frozen mixed berries 1 cup frozen pineapple chunks 1 ripe banana ¾ cup plain non-fat yogurt ¾ cup pineapple juice

In a blender combine yogurt and pineapple juice. Add frozen fruit one cup at a time and chop until smooth after each addition.

Serve immediately or place in freezer bags and freeze until needed. Allow 4 – 6 hours to defrost in refrigerator.

Makes 4 one-cup servings.

Pound Cake

One-Step Pound Cake: 2 1/4 cup flour 2 cups sugar 1/2 tsp. baking soda 1 tsp. grated lemon rind 1 tsp. vanilla 1 cup soft butter 3 eggs 1 cup sour cream

Cream sugar and butter very well, 4-5 min. Add eggs, one at a time, Mix flour, soda, and salt Add alternately with sour cream. Pour into one large loaf pan or 2 small loaf pans. Bake @ 325 degrees for 60-70 minutes or until done. Cool on rack. Remove from pans.

Chef’s Note: I use a bit less than 2 cups sugar, about 1 3/4 cups, as I find more is too sweet. You may also pour a lemon glaze over top of the cake when it comes from the oven.

Author’s Note: Lin Clineburg prepared this in a 9 x 13” pan for the church event, and it disappeared.

Preserving the Architectural Heritage and Structural Integrity of Christ Church, St. Michaels; Work Beginning Sept. 12th – Ray Wasdyke In 2014, the Christ Church vestry property liaisons initiated a major survey of repairs needed to preserve the architectural heritage and integrity of Christ Church. In 2015, the parish retained the firm of Noekler and Hull Associates, Inc., to conduct a survey to assess the structural integrity of the building. John D. Hynes & Associates, Inc. conducted a subsurface and geotechnical engineering survey as well. The results of these efforts identified three priorities: the need to (1) underpin the exterior stone buttresses with concrete footings; (2) repair the tower and belfry louvers, flashings, and to repoint stonework, modify copper flashings throughout the church, repair snowbirds and inspect the slate roof; and (3) install interior tension cables and associated structural steel at roof framing with wood millwork to conceal the structural steel.

A competitive bid process resulted in Yerkes Construction Company being awarded a contract to address these priorities. Yerkes began work on September 12th to make the necessary repairs, and the work is expected to be completed by the first of the year -- weather and unforeseen contingencies permitting. Yerkes will work Mondays through Thursdays, and the church will generally be open during the week as well as be available for weekend services. However, the church may be closed at times during some phases of the work to ensure the safety of clergy, parishioners and visitors. Periodic progress reports on the renovations will be published in Tidings .

(Still) Looking For a Few Good Students! -- Julie Hart

Yes! I would love to have some new students for our Fall Icon Workshop--people (men and women) who have little or no experience with a paint brush. You don’t even need to have painted a wall. I take you step by step

in the process of “writing” (painting) your icon. It is called writing, because each brush stroke is a prayer. You Can Do This . Bel i eve me!

The Fall Workshop will be the week of October 24th, Monday through Friday, from 9:00 am - 4:00 pm, with an hour at noon for lunch. We meet in The Nursery in our lovely, well-lighted space. The limit for persons attending is eight. New students will be starting with the Face of Christ. Intermediate students will be doing St. Francis. The cost of the workshop, which covers all materials and instruction, is $170. If you have any questions, please see me, Julie Hart, or call me at 717-433-0801. Feel free to drop by the house, 105 West Chew Ave, to see my many icons.

The two icons shown here will be on view in the back of the church for a few Sundays in October.

Perspectives on Congregational Life - A Series of Workshops - John Keydel On several Saturday Mornings this Fall (see below), there will be a series of workshops addressing a number of different ways of viewing and understanding some of the many dimensions of congregational life and dynamics.

These workshops are an integral part of the formal clergy transition process and fulfill at least two very important functions: -- First, and most importantly, they introduce proven common language for talking and thinking about many of the things that happen in congregations everywhere, including Christ Church St. Michaels. Because of the importance of this shared language, ALL SESSIONS ARE OPEN TO EVERYONE! -- Second, they give potentially interested individuals an opportunity to see if this type of inquiry is appealing to those who may wish to consider nomination for the Search Committee (most likely to take place sometime in the winter). Attendance and enthusiastic participation in all of the sessions may be a good indicator that you might be a valuable member of the Search Committee, but much more will be communicated about that later.

On Saturday, October 1st, we will consider the interrelationship of Congregational Size and the various and related cultural characteristics -- something along the lines of last month’s Tidings article on “How Things Get Done.” In addition to the characteristics of the several different size/culture configurations, we will also look at what happens as congregations change from one state to another.

Congregations, like individuals and like all organizations, experience different stages of the Life Cycle, and evolve different cultures and behaviors at each step. On Saturday, October 22nd, we will explore two different Life Cycle models, both of which have proven to be very valuable in thinking about congregational life, and (especially) the type of leadership that is necessary as we think about the possibilities that the future holds before us.

On Saturday, November 19th, we will explore a way of thinking about the different expressions of ministry that every church does in varying degrees, and we will create a graphic depiction of the Images of Ministry that may be prevalent at Christ Church in the Fall of 2016.

On Saturday, December 3rd, we will explore the History of Christ Church, St. Michaels, with particular emphasis on how that history has been experienced by different people entering at different points in their personal and our corporate lifetime. This workshop will focus more heavily on the lived experience of the members of the congregation than on specific events, although those, too, are very important and will be captured on a large scale.

All Sessions will run from 9:00 am until noon; refreshments will be available shortly after 8:30.

Talbot Cluster -- Martha Austin

In 2015, The Discernment Committee of the Diocese of Easton presented a report to the Standing Committee answering the question, “What is the best way for the Church to proclaim the gospel of Christ, to celebrate the people’s ministries and to grow the church on the Eastern Shore of Maryland?”

One of their first recommendations was to establish clusters of neighboring parishes, to organize and then find opportunities to share and collaborate in various areas such as worship, youth ministry, evangelism, outreach and Christian formation.

Hence the Talbot Cluster consisting of Christ Church Easton, All Faith Tunis Mills, Holy Trinity Oxford, St. Paul’s Trappe, Trinity Cathedral Easton and Christ Church St. Michaels has been organized. Two to three lay and one or two clergy persons are parish representatives and meet every 4-6 weeks. Clelia, who will be leaving soon, John, David Frantz and I represent Christ Church St. Michaels. Right now, the cluster parish representatives are in the “getting to know you” stage -- meeting at each others’ churches for a tour and overview of differing programs, worship styles, challenges and personalities. We have discovered there is an abundance of energy in Talbot County, and good works are happening all around us.

Lori Ramsey shared with the group how our community programs such as “Mommy, Me and Music” and “Shared Table” work, and there has been real interest shown. “TheOnes” program Lori started here in St Michaels seemed particularly interesting to the group, so going forward, all Talbot Cluster churches will receive notices of TheOnes happenings. Looking much further into the calendar, we will again host the Great Easter Vigil here at Christ Church, and the Talbot Cluster will be the sponsor. Our worship space is perfect for this beautiful service and we want our whole Talbot community to have the chance to experience it.

We are feeling our way through this Cluster idea of neighboring congregations being mutually beneficial. But I can say for sure that I have enjoyed meeting and getting to know other Talbot County Episcopalians who are on the same road as, I think, we are.

Docents’ Guild – Linda Makosky Soon after the completed renovation of the Christ Church Parish House, the Christ Church Librarian, Lyn Barrett and her husband Bob unpacked the library contents which had been safely stored for three years in the church basement.

“We packed the books following the order of the Dewey Decimal system, and numbered the boxes,” Lyn said. “We put away thirty-nine boxes, and when we brought them out there were forty!” When Lyn opened the fortieth box she found not neatly stacked library books but a mass of very old newspapers. Removing the newspapers, she uncovered the main contents of the box: one very large leather-bound volume about 5 inches thick. Across the spine in gold letters were the words “HOLY BIBLE” and lower down, in smaller gold print, “ST. MICHAELS PARISH.” “This was an old pulpit Bible,” Lyn thought,

“probably made right after the revolution.” Carefully examining the huge book, she found between the pages one loose sheet of fragile paper, the color of weak tea, covered with very regular lines of slanting script.

“A connection to our parish past,” she commented, “The vestry obviously used the Bible.”

Subsequent study revealed that the Bible had been printed in Philadelphia and was composed of separate Old and New Testaments bound together. Lyn arranged to have the leather binding professionally restored and was given archival material to enclose the delicate letter page. Parish Secretary Mary Thomas undertook to create a current version of the elegantly penned script, which was addressed “To The Vestry of St. Michaels Parish, Nov. 5th 1804,” from John Goldsborough. (See a photo of the letter above, made by the author.) The opening paragraph reads: “Mr. Nice has (paper torn) begged me to write a few lines to you respecting this suit against him. He says he is perfectly willing to submit the dispute to any two or three respectable and impartial persons; and as he was innocently drawn into his present dilemma, I mean, as he cut the trees (without knowing better-words deleted) under an impression that Mr. John Jones was authorized to give him the liberty he did, I think it would be admissible to leave the matter to reference.” Lyn and Bob inquired among the church members for an explanation of the appearance of the historic Bible. The mystery was never solved. A glass-topped display case to house the Bible was commissioned by the Docent’s Guild and built by Tom Norris. You may see the Bible there today, along with other historic bibles. The letter page will be stored in an archival box, and the transcription will be available in the Lea Library. Our thanks to our fellow docent, Lyn, for sharing her interesting experience.

Men’s Club – George Dixon

The next Men’s Club meeting will be Saturday, November 12th, at 8:00 am in Etherton Hall for breakfast and another Gentlemen’s Conversation. Don’t worry; we’ll be finished by 9:00 am. With a hearty breakfast under your belt, you’ll be all ready for a full day at the Waterfowl Festival. Stay tuned for the topic of the November 12th Gentlemen’s Conversation.
