How will DRA2 help you guide your
students to become
proficient, enthusiastic readers?
DRA2 provides:
A method for assessing and documenting
students’ reading development over time.
Help in determining each student’s
independent reading level
Help in identifying what the student needs
to learn next
![Page 8: Dra2 online course slide show](https://reader034.fdocuments.net/reader034/viewer/2022042816/559830361a28ab2b178b47e7/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Overview
Given three times a year (BOY,
MOY, EOY)
Assessments are conducted during
one-on-one reading conferences
Students read specially selected
texts, as teachers record data
Student writing component for
levels 28 and above
![Page 9: Dra2 online course slide show](https://reader034.fdocuments.net/reader034/viewer/2022042816/559830361a28ab2b178b47e7/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
Rationale
DRA2 assesses student performance in
the following areas of reading
proficiency:
Reading engagement
Oral reading fluency
Comprehension
![Page 10: Dra2 online course slide show](https://reader034.fdocuments.net/reader034/viewer/2022042816/559830361a28ab2b178b47e7/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Implications for Teaching
Provides teachers with information to:
Find appropriate books for students at their independent reading level
Group students for guided reading instruction
Monitor and document change over time in each student’s reading
Identify students working below proficiency that need intervention
![Page 11: Dra2 online course slide show](https://reader034.fdocuments.net/reader034/viewer/2022042816/559830361a28ab2b178b47e7/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
Good Readers and DRA2
DRA2 was designed with a focus on
the characteristics and behaviors of
good readers
(Detailed information about these
characteristics and behaviors can
be found on pages 7-9 in your DRA2
Teacher Guide)
![Page 12: Dra2 online course slide show](https://reader034.fdocuments.net/reader034/viewer/2022042816/559830361a28ab2b178b47e7/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
Assessment Guidelines
Comprehension is checked orally for levels 4-
24
Comprehension is checked from written
responses for levels 28 and above
Oral reading is timed for a fluency check for
levels 14 and above
Responses to predictions are recorded:
by the teacher for levels 18-38
by the student for levels 40 and above
![Page 13: Dra2 online course slide show](https://reader034.fdocuments.net/reader034/viewer/2022042816/559830361a28ab2b178b47e7/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)

Preparing for Assessment
Select the DRA2 benchmark books needed
Make copies of each assessment form needed
Assemble assessment materials
Review or learn how to take and analyze a running record
Read all the Benchmark Assessment Books that you will be using

ASSESSMENT
Steps for conducting the assessment:
Give the student a choice of books
Ask student the reading engagement questions and record responses
Introduce book and observe picture walk (levels 4-16)
Introduce book and show student where to stop reading before making predictions (levels 18 and above)
Time oral reading (levels 14 and above)
![Page 23: Dra2 online course slide show](https://reader034.fdocuments.net/reader034/viewer/2022042816/559830361a28ab2b178b47e7/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
ASSESSMENT When oral reading is finished, have student
close book while you record oral reading time on chart. Then calculate the number of errors and record on chart.
Select descriptors on continuum that best describe student’s oral reading expression and phrasing
Read prediction prompt and record responses (levels 18-38). Students record predictions (level 40 and above)
![Page 24: Dra2 online course slide show](https://reader034.fdocuments.net/reader034/viewer/2022042816/559830361a28ab2b178b47e7/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
ASSESSMENT Read prompt for student to finish reading book
Read retelling prompt and record responses (levels 4-24)
Read interpretation and reflection prompts and record responses (levels 4-24)
Students record their responses after reading (levels 28 and above)-book can be open
Use information from Teacher Observation Guide (all levels) and Student booklet (levels 28 and above) to choose descriptors on continuum.
