L. Summary of my Activities and Future Plans
Research projects and contribution to the field
Past Research Projects + Contributions to Science:
When writing my doctoral dissertation (completed in 2003), I hose to take a
multidisciplinary approach to the subject of American law, legal history, and the
cinematic representations of how they interface. My research addressed legal, social,
religious, cultural and gendered aspects of the death penalty in the USA alongside the
history of its cinematic and other audiovisual representations. My findings showed
that reflections on capital punishment in film have, in turn, shaped real historical
developments and public perceptions by bringing the issues into sharper relief.
Such films have simultaneously shaped and reflected the spirit of their times and the
public’s consciousness of historical events. My focus on the American lawyers
involved in the Nuremberg Trials and the screening of the film The Nazi
Concentration Camps, led me to more in-depth research on cinematic representations
of the Holocaust, as part of my postdoctoral research at the Institute for Holocaust
Research, Yad Vashem. My research demonstrated that collective memory of the
Holocaust in the 20th
century is mostly structured from pictures and images from the
concentration camp liberation films distributed throughout Europe and the USA in the
immediate postwar years. This finding contributed to the research of history and film,
and the importance of film in shaping historical and social consciousness of
individuals and nations. The themes of World War I and II fascinated me, and I
continued to write about the wars of the 20th
century and its traumatic events (e.g., my
research on Australian and New Zealanders film and the representations of World
War I, especially the fighting in the Middle East).
Y. Kozlovsky Golan
[28]
My work also draws upon my many other spheres of interest, all with the common
denominator of the cinema: history, literature and poetry, digital arts, the art of film
and journalism.
Current Research Projects
Planned Projects
I am currently working on a book based on the Jewish communities of North Africa
and the Holocaust This research will be published in my next book. I have already
traveled to several of the military archives on my list, beginning in France. I will also
be conducting research in the USA, UK, Germany and Italy, and back to France,
where I have already located visual documents and audiovisual materials from World
War II relevant to the Jewish communities in those countries. (My grant from the
Payis Foundation for Culture is assisting my research).
