Academic Profile Dr. WASIM AHMAD
Ph. D., D. Sc, FNASc, FNAAS, FLS (London), JSPS Fellow (Japan) Professor & Ex-Chairperson Department of Zoology Aligarh Muslim University Aligarh – 202 002 INDIA Director
Academic Programmes Committee Aligarh Muslim University Aligarh- 202 002 Contact details: Telephone (O). +91 571 2720921‐23 Ext. 3430, 3431, 3441 Mobile: +919897397412 e-mail: [email protected] , Prof. Wasim Ahmad is an Internationally acclaimed Nematologist with about four decades of research experience on soil nematode fauna of different geographical regions of India and over twenty different countries of the world. He has described over three hundred new taxa of nematodes and made detailed Scanning Electron Microscopic observations and molecular characterization of several nematode species. His ecological studies using nematodes as ecological models for food web diagnostic studies in soil ecosystem and the effect of pollutants on the nematode food web is highly appreciated world over. His SEM studies led to the discovery of several hitherto unknown morphological features in nematodes, whereas, the molecular studies using 18s rDNA sequence has given new insight into phylogenetic relationships. He has also contributed significantly to the functional diversity and food web diagnostics of soil inhabiting nematodes in natural forests as well as polluted crop fields. All his work has been published in top Nematology Journals of the world, such as Nematology (The Netherlands), Fundamentals and Applied Nematology (France), Journal of Nematode Morphology & Systematics (Spain), Japanese Journal of Nematology (Japan), International Journal of Nematology (U.K). Journal of Natural History (U.K.), Zootaxa (New Zealand), Jounal of Nematology (USA) etc. His monumental books entitled “Dorylaimida; Free-living, predaceous and plant parasitic nematodes” (1992) and Mononchida: Predaceous Nematodes (2010), both published by E.J. Brill, Leiden, The Netherlands are unique world-wide reference for study of dorylaim and mononchid nematodes. His other books include “Plant-parasitic nematodes of India : An Identification Manual”, a monograph on Alaimina, a book on management of gram pod
2
borer (Helicoverpa armigera), and a book entitled Nematodes as bio-indicator of soil ecosystem published from Germany. He has recently (2018) edited two volumes: entitled “Termites and Sustainable management” Vol I. Biology, Social Behaviour & Economic Importance and Vol. II. Economic Losses and Management, published by Springer, Switzerland under its Sustainability in Plant & Crop Protection series. He has visited many countries as visiting Professor/Scientists on prestigious visiting fellowships from Royal Society (UK), DFG (Germany), JSPS (Japan), Erasmus Mundus Scholar (European Union), CAS (China), KOSEF (Korea), SNU Singapore, INBio Costa Rica and many others. Dr. Ahmad is recipient of E.K. Janaki Ammal National Award on Animal Taxonomy by Ministry of Environment & Forests, Government of India (2009), the Vigyan Ratan Award of the Uttar Pradesh Department of Science & Technology (2010), S.P. Gupta Gold Medal of Zoological Society of India (2011) and the Recognition award of the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Ministry of Agriculture, Govt. of India (2013). He is Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, India (FNASc), the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences (FNAAS) and a Fellow of the Linnaean Society of London (FLS).

Some International opinions on the Research work of Dr. Wasim Ahmad
Dr. Ahmad is a taxonomist of best sense, he has a true taxonomic vena. His studies on ecology and morphology of nematodes are, however, remarkable as well. We have to thank Dr. Ahmad for new definition of several inexactly known species of nematodes as well. The top of his publication is the book “Dorylaimida”. Every thing we can and must know on that large and so important group of nematodes is to be found in the splendid monograph. It is a manual that may not be missing on the desk of any Nematologist, A monumental work indeed. I estimate Dr. Ahmad a Scientist of high value. He is a true expert. Dr. Ahmad’s scientific life is a great profit to science. By his work and results India has become more known and appreciated in every country where science exists.
(Late) Prof. I. Andrássy Emeritus Professor, Eotvos Lorand University, Budapest, Hungary
Dr. Ahmad is an all-round taxonomist of free-living nematodes. The number of
new taxa that has been described by him is impressive. He has successfully followed the footsteps of his teacher Prof. M. S. Jairajpuri. The department can be ascertained that excellent taxonomic tradition will be continued through researchers such as Dr. Wasim Ahmad

Professor Wasim Ahmad is a vastly experienced nematode taxonomist who enjoys a world-wide reputation for his work, which has been particularly focused on dorylaims, mononchids and entomopathogenic nematodes. He has made major contributions to our understanding of nematode systematics and biodiversity. He has also contributed to other areas of nematology such as ultrastructure, molecular taxonomy and functional morphology. He publishes extensively in peer reviewed nematology journals and is a regular and trusted peer reviewer of papers submitted by other scientists.
Dr. David J. Hunt Principal Nematode Taxonomist &
Editor-in-Chief, Nematology CABI Bioscience
Egham, UK
In 1997 the Dutch Government funded a project at the Instituto Nacional de Biodiversidad aiming at describing the nematode fauna of Costa Rica. Being International Coordinator I realized that many international taxonomists would follow the development with interest. Therefore I asked one of the most acknowledged taxonomists to contribute to that project. The participation of Prof. Ahmad made this inventory successful; his visit to the INBio in June-July 2001 resulted in a valuable series of high quality papers. Dr. Ahmad is an outstanding nematologist. Although Dr. Ahmad is usually seen as the expert of the dorylaim taxonomy, his studies on the ecology and morphology of nematodes are, remarkable as well. Besides his knowledge on Dorylaimida taxonomy, Dr. Ahmad has also built a good reputation regarding the taxonomy and ecology of entomopathogenic nematodes; a group of nematodes which were usually described by non-taxonomists.
Dr. A.M.T. Bongers Formerly Head, Deparment of Nematology
Wageningen Agricultural University, The Netherlands
Dr. Ahmad is an internationally acknowledged expert in the taxonomy of certain nematode groups. Dr. Ahmad’s opinion will enhance the value of our collection and advance nematode systematics generally.
Prof. P.J.D. Lambshead Natural History Museum, London
Dr. Ahmad has performed an outstanding contribution in the field of Nematology, very particularly in the taxonomy and morphology of the members of the order Dorylaimida. He is co-author of the major available monograph on this group, published in 1992, which was and is still today, an unique world-wide reference for the study of this nematode taxon. As a consequence of his extraordinary career, he has obtained the respect and the best consideration from other nematologists and colleagues.
