Early Life

Theodor Seuss Geisel

He credited his mother for his love of rhymes and his ability to create the rhymes that he has become known for.

Why the name Seuss?

He attended Dartmouth College and he was involved in the campus humor magazine Jack-O-Lantern.

He would sign his articles “Seuss”, which was “both his middle name and his mother’s maiden name.” (All About Dr. Seuss).

What happened after Dartmouth?

He went on to Oxford University to please his father.

It was here that he met his wife, Helen Palmer.

Life Back in the States

After touring Europe, he returned and became a cartoonist.

His early career was “devoted to creating advertising campaigns for Standard Oil, which he did for more than 15 years” (All About Dr. Seuss).

WWII Involvement

Began contributing political cartoons to a liberal magazine called PM Magazine.
