How the KTN can assist the Polymer Community,

the National Polymer Centre,

UK Elastomer Strategy and routes to funding.

Manchester Polymer Group, 16 May 2016

IntroducingThe Knowledge Transfer network

— KTN Ltd is the UK’s innovation network.

— KTN Ltd connects people. To speed up innovation,

solve problems and find markets for new ideas.

What we do:

ktn-uk.org @KTNUKktn-uk.org @KTNUK

solve problems and find markets for new ideas.

— KTN Ltd brings together businesses, entrepreneurs,

academics and funders to develop new products,

processes and services.

The Knowledge Transfer Network

Connecting people to accelerate innovation

ktn-uk.org @KTNUKktn-uk.org @KTNUK

Interdisciplinary

Bringing together

businesses and

researchers from different

sectors.

Commercial

Introducing innovators to

public and private

funders and investors.

Strategic

Connecting people who

wouldn’t usually meet to

solve innovation

challenges.

Entrepreneurial

Linking people with new

ideas and technologies to

partners and customers.

Clustered communities, groups and business programmes

Focus is on bringing together groups that would not normally meet

Goal:

Supply business and

technical support to the

elastomers, polymers and

soft matter community.

Why:

Plastics, Elastomers, Soft materials

ktn-uk.org @KTNUK

Why:

Plastics industry –

turnover £19 billion

180,000 employees,

7500 companies (British Plastics Federation)

• Elastomers and rubbers industry -

turnover of £4 billion

• 23,000 employees, 500 companies (Office of

National Statistics).

• Diverse and manufacturers supply to all

sectors in the UK from household goods,

healthcare, defence and transport, oil &

Elastomers

WMG - National Polymer Processing Centre

WMG at the University of Warwick has established a

new National Polymer Processing Centre (NPPC)

which will provide a national hub for innovation and

research in plastics processing.

The new NPPC brings a fully integrated approach to

plastics design, manufacturing and disposal,

Prof. Tony McNally,

Director of NPPC

ktn-uk.org @KTNUK

plastics design, manufacturing and disposal,

encompassing multifunctional design and low

environmental impact.

The new centre will have its own bespoke building by

2017 with facilities for training, research and

development, and will also house a fully equipped

elastomer technology laboratory.
