ConferencesThe 2007/2008 academic year was very eventful for the Department. It continued to play an active role inthe organization and delivery of the Roundtable Conferences sponsored by the Historical Society ofGhana to commemorate the Golden Jubilee Anniversary of Ghana's Independence.

The theme for the Roundtable Conferences was "Reflections on Fifty Years of Ghana's Independence:Interrogating the Past, Shaping the Future". Dr. W.J. Donkoh, Head of the Department of History andPolitical Studies presented a paper on the Progress Party (PP) Government during the RoundtableConference on "Good Governance: Institutional and Political Stability, Growth and Effectiveness" thattook place from 17th­18th December 2007 at the Organization of African Trade Unions Unity (OATUU)conference Center in Accra.

WorkshopsDr. W.J. Donkoh Participated in the launch of the American Council of Learned Societies Programme todeepen scholarship in the Humanities. The programme seeks to offer fellowships to young Faculty andresearchers in Africa. The objective is to assist African researchers pursuing doctoral and post doctoralresearch in the Humanities to write winnable proposals. The workshop was held from the 18th 20thSeptember 2008, at the Institute of African Studies, University of Ghana, Legon. As a follow­up, Dr.Donkoh and Mrs. Vesta Adu­Gyamfi of the Department of Integrated Arts and Rural Industry whoattended the programme together are planning to disseminate information and insights acquired from theworkshop among Faulty within the College of Arts and Social Sciences.

The Coordinator for the college of Art and Social Sciences Intra­College Seminar Series since 2006.Under her auspices the College organized seven seminars during the 2007/2008 academic year. Shepresented a Public Lecture on the topic "50 years of Science and Technology Education in Ghana:Interrogating the Past, Shaping the Future" on 10th October 2007.

An International Conference on the Bicentennial anniversary of the Abolition of the Trans­Atlantic Slave Trade was oganised from the 7th 12th August 2007 at Elmina. The Conference sponsoredby the US­based Umuhundro Institute of Early American History and Culture brought together a selectgroup of Africanist scholars from around the world to share ideas, knowledge and experiences about theslave trade and its abolition. Under the theme, "The Bloody Handwriting is on the Wall", Dr. Donkohpresented a paper titled, "Fantse Man from the North: The Slave Trade, Memory, Perception andConstruction of Identity in Ghana".

Mr. Kwasi Amakye­Boateng a political studies lecturer attended a seminar under the theme "EffectiveDemocratic Governance: The role of Stake Holders." It was the 3rd Daily Graphic Governance Dialogue,the conference was held on the 5th 6th of August 2008. The conference explored what role state holderscould play in the Governance of Ghana. The papers presented at the seminars covered such areas as theNational Electoral Commission, Security, women's role in enhancing governance and the contribution ofgovernance institutions as well.

ExhibitionsThe Department participated in the "Ghana @ 50 People Oriented" Exhibition sponsored by the GhanaAcademy of Arts and Sciences organized at the Ghana International Trade Fair Centre, Accra fromSeptember, 2007. The Department used the opportunity to showcase some of the scholarly publications,research findings and dissertations by its academic staff and students.

About UsThe Department of History and Political Studies is one of the departments under the Faculty of SocialSciences, College of Art and Social Sciences. The Department currently awards two undergraduatesdegrees in Bachelor of Arts in Political Studies and Bachelor of Arts in History to several number ofstudents and is one of the largest degree awarding departments of the college. The Department is in theprocess of starting two master degree programmes in political studies: MPhil and MPA.

Over several years the Department has been engaged in carrying out its fundamental responsibilities inteaching mainstream courses in History and Political Science in addition to honouring service invitationsfrom the Department of Geography and Rural Development and the Faculty of Law. Service coursestaught include Introduction to Historical Studies, History of Slavery in Africa,Historical Monuments inGhana and African Political Systems and The Political Process in Ghana to first and second year studentsin the Culture and Tourism course.

The Department also offers service courses in the History of Ghana and African Political Systems to thesecond year Law students. Lecturers and graduate students engage vigorously in research for theenhancement of academic activities in the Department.The KNUST department of History and PoliticalStudies is ranked among the best in the country. The department trains students in the fundamentals ofhistorical and Political skills that will provide a foundation for excellence in a wide range of careers andprofession.

Research expertise covers a wide range of aspects of human history, from ancient to contemporarysocieties, and political theory, public policy, media and politics, as well as History and regional politics,and further transcends these confines. These skills culminate in a range of undergraduate and graduatecourses in a stimulating research environment.  You will find on this website details about all aspects ofthe Department, including the undergraduate and graduate programs, courses, faculty, and upcomingevents.

Aims & ObjectivesHistory Programme

To help develop interest and understanding about the life of people who lived in the past todevelop a sense of identity and a cultural understanding based on their historical heritage to helpmake their own life choices today.To evaluate and appreciate significant contribution to events in the past have influenced our livestoday and also to investigate these past events and, by so doing, to develop the skills of enquiry,analysis, interpretation and problem­solving.To foster interest in the past and to develop an understanding that enables history to be enjoyed,what history has to offer and to appreciate how things have change over time.To have some knowledge and understanding of historical development in the wider world and todevelop a sense of chronology.To help society develop a sense of their cultural heritage.

 

Political Science Programme

The Political Science Programme is geared towards the development of a tradition, deeply rootedin the field of political science.To offer the undergraduate an exposure to political life in relation to the study of political theory,political processes and institutions at the national and international levels.To train students to describe and evaluate curricular reform in political scienceTo address issues and approaches regarding political science education, including teaching­relatedissues, methods and techniques.To equip students in educational assessment in political science, graduate education, andcurriculum development.
