PERSONAL HISTORY

Born in Madurai, Tamilnadu, India on March 27, 1960 to Dr. J.K.B. Chandra and J.C. Jayalakshmi.

Late Dr. J.K.B. Chandra, MD was a general physician, Honorary Professor of Medicine at Madurai Medical

College, Rajaji (Erskin) Hospital, and Madurai. Served for nearly 27 years in government service as an honorary

physician.

Mother, J.C. Jayalakshmi is a housewife and mother of four. I am her second child. She was instrumental in

guiding all the four kids in professional courses – 3 in medicine and 1 in law.

School:

St. Joseph’s School, Madurai – 1965 to 1970

I to V standard (Tamil Medium)

Sourashtra High School, Madurai – 1970 to 1975

VI to XII standard (English Medium)

Artist, Sportsman:

Even at VI standard, used to play competitive cricket with senior boys in school team.

Got selected to Madurai School District Cricket team in 1975, captained the school senior cricket side in 1975.

Shear hard work earned me a place in first division Madurai Cricket League and played for Chamundi Cricket

Club in 1975.

College:

In 1976 I got admission in the prestigious American College Madurai for my PUC exams. I selected

second section Biology, Chemistry and Physics. French was my second language that time. Studied hard for

medicine and at the same time pursued my carrier in cricket. Selected for college team and contributed a lot to

college, Districts and first division League. The more I played cricket the better I studied. Got good marks and

was selected for medicine.

Medicine:

MBBS 1977 – 1983 at Madurai Medical College, Madurai.

Had keen interest in anatomy and surgery.

Completed house surgeoncy in 1983- 84.

During this period I was playing high standard cricket and was selected to play for Madurai Kamaraj University

and senior Madurai District team. Played for S.S. Rajan trophy. Still hold the record for highest run for the last

wicket 69 runs in S S. Rajan trophy, since 1981. Off- spinner and middle order bat contributed a lot for the team.

Incidentally I played my debut District match at forest college ground in CBE in 1978-79 against CBE District

team. Considered as one of the promising youngster by V.V. Kumar, the Legendry Leg spinner of

Tamilnadu and India now heads the SPIC spin foundation.

Medicine finally succeeded sports in my carrier. Joined Neurosurgery department, Madurai in 1985 as a special

trainee and later became full-fledged Neurosurgeon in 1991.

Between 1991 and 1998 worked in one of the best hospitals in cochin – MEDICAL TRUST HOSPITAL where

major brain and spine sugeries were done. Around 2000 such surgeries were performed.

Invited to JAPAN IN 1995 and worked under DR.KANNO who treated our ex CM Dr.MGR.

Renowned surgeon in SPINE SURGERY – KEY HOLE OPERATIONS and MICROSURGERY of

BRAIN.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Between June 1991 and December 1998 -- for DNBE students in Neuro surgery.

The Department of Neurosurgery, Medical Trust Hospital, and Kochi is recognized for training candidates for

Diplomate of National Board Examination, India since 30.03.1991. Regular ward rounds and bedside case

discussions, weekly twice lecturers, preoperative discussions, surgical guidance, video-teaching sessions, journal

club, thesis guidance to DNBE students. The department has produced three neurosurgeons so far.

FELLOWSHIP TRAINING PROGRAMME

Fellowship training in SPINAL SURGERY was started in 2004 for young Neuro and Orthopaedic surgeons .The

period of training is for 6 months .During this period the trainees undergo hands on the utility of Operating

Microscope and spinal instruments, apart from case studies and observer training. Academic activities, paper

presentation and article publications in the field of spinal surgery are mandatory. Organisation skills on

workshops ,conferences, inter speciality disciplinary are compulsory in the programme. Teacher – Student

relationship and long term academic interests are the goals apart from imparting surgical skills to the fellows.
