Aim of investigation:

The increasing job-related and private stress in population leads to many CMD patients in dental surgery. The BC can help to produce a relax-splint without deflective occlusal contacts. The grinding pattern is usually evaluated by putting the BC on top of the natural arch. The new aspect in this case is the placement of the BC on the relax-splint.

Material and Methods:

The BC acc. to Prof. Sato is a one sided red color coated foil which can be used by the pressure moulding technique.Dimension: 0,1 x 125 mm rd.Chemical data – foil: polyvinyl chloride, coat: dinatrium-2-benzoate Splint: Durasoftfoil ® 1.8 x 125 mm rd. , acrylic

Silicone impressions, a check bite and the arbitrary determination of the hinge position with a face-bow (e.g. SAM-System) are necessary.

The BC is put on top of the bite splint by using the pressure moulding technique. (lower right)

The patient wears the bite splint with the BC on top for one night. Premature and unwanted contacts can be found and eliminated on the following day. We used Durasoft foil 1.8 mm for the bite splint and acrylic for the occlusal plane.

The thickness of the BC after moulding is less than 0.1 mm. EMG test showed no difference of effects on masticatory muscles neither with nor without Bruxchecker. (Onodera,K.

Results and Discussion:

By using the BC you can abandon an occlusion foil or spray to find premature contacts.

Instead of guiding the patients lower jaw, contacts can be found in a relatively “relaxed” position while sleeping. Eliminating of the unwanted contacts is easy.

Conclusions:

Instead of guiding the lower jaw by hand, the premature contacts will be marked by the BC under circumstances of the habitual dysfunction.

With the BruxChecker® it is possible to visualize interferences with the splint during sleep-bruxism.

BC simplifies the adaptation of an accurate bite splint and shows the success of treatment.

A happy patient after using the BruxChecker®.
