Dr. Michael D. Maloney Dr. Michael D. Maloney is a board certified orthopaedic surgeon. He is the director of the University of Rochester Medical Center’s (URMC) Orthopaedics' University Sports Medicine, and a professor of orthopaedics at URMC. Dr. Maloney earned his medical degree from Georgetown University and completed his surgical residency at URMC Orthopaedics and the Sports Medicine Fellowship at the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic in Los Angeles. Dr. Maloney serves as a medical consultant for several professional and regional sports organizations and teams, including the National Hockey League Players’ Association, PGA, LPGA, the Buffalo Bills, and the Rochester Rhinos Professional Soccer Team. He is also the team physician for the Rochester Red Wings AAA Baseball Team. His research interests overlie his clinical practice treating orthopaedic injuries sustained by juvenile to senior and casual to master athletes. Dr. Maloney’s ongoing research includes the treatment of muscle, tendon, ligament, and cartilage injuries through novel stem cell and tissue engineering techniques; the evaluation of the cellular link between meniscal injuries and progressive arthritis; and the rotator cuff healing models relative to treatment modalities. He has authored numerous medical journal articles on topics such as the biomechanics of the injured and uninjured knee and experimental gene therapy for cartilage repair. He has also given nearly 100 presentations across the globe on advances in orthopaedics and sports medicine. Dr. Maloney also participates in several professional organizations that focus on orthopaedic and sports medicine, including the Magellan Society of Traveling Sports Medicine Fellows, the American Orthopaedic Association, the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
