In Your Front Teeth Some celebrities are known for the gaps in their front teeth (David Letterman, Lauren Hutton, Condoleeza Rice), and while there are people who consider it fashionable, many others with tooth gaps are self-conscious about their smiles. If you’re reluctant to smile because you feel that your diastema (the medical term for a space between your teeth) detracts from your appearance, Dr. Courey can close the gap. Treatment options include veneers, composite bonding, orthodontics or a combination of dental therapies. The size of the diastema, the positions of both the adjacent and opposing teeth (occlusion) and the condition of the teeth are all considered in determining the most desirable treatment. When a space between teeth is relatively small, cosmetic bonding is often used to fill in the gap. To properly and effectively close larger gaps, porcelain veneers — or even dental crowns — may be required. While cosmetic dentistry can close tooth gaps to make a smile more attractive, there may also be compelling medical reasons to treat a diastema. When gum (periodontal) disease causes bone loss around teeth, they may drift out of position and affect the bite (occlusion), causing the teeth to move even further out of position. Dr. Courey asks our “gap” patients if they’ve always had a space between their teeth and if it has been increasing. A widening gap may signal underlying problems. Some teeth that have migrated out of position can be easily repositioned by treating any underlying periodontal infection and adjusting the interference in the bite. Over time, this may allow the lips to push the teeth back into position. Another reason to have diastemas treated is that they may act as food traps, which can cause both tooth decay and discomfort.

That Gap... In Your Front Teeth

Some celebrities are known for the gaps in their front teeth (David Letterman, Lauren Hutton, Condoleeza Rice), and while there are people who consider it fashionable, many others with tooth gaps are self-conscious about their smiles.

Dental ImplantsIn today’s world, crowns and

bridges made on dental implants should look and feel like your own teeth. Dental implants are a routine part of modern dentistry – no longer considered “experimental” or even “new.” They have revolutionized dentistry, and now they are tried and true.

Studies have found that the success rate for today’s dental implants is as high as 98 percent, regardless of patient’s age, with no or little discernable bone loss over time.

In the hands of a properly trained and skilled specialized dentist, like Dr. Courey, they are a safe, predictable and most often preferred alternative to old-fashioned bridges and dentures.

Placed in your jawbone, the implant (a titanium screw post) replaces the root

of the missing tooth and fuses with the bone in a process called

“osseointegration.” The implant is

then fitted with a replacement tooth. Multiple

implants can also be used to support

a permanent bridge (replacing several

missing teeth) which is cemented or screwed into

the implants.Today’s implants are

not susceptible to periodontal disease or tooth decay – the processes that cause breakdown

and loss of natural teeth. They are permanent –

and in most cases can last a lifetime.

In traditional fixed bridges,

the teeth

adjacent to a missing tooth are ground down and covered with crowns in order to support the false tooth (pontic) in between them. A dental implant used to replace a missing tooth is a more conservative, less invasive, more durable and more natural, comfortable alternative.

With a single-tooth implant replacement, your own teeth remain completely untouched and unharmed.

And there is good news for denture wearers; even complete dentures can now be supported by implants in what is called an overdenture. The advantage of an implant-supported overdenture is that it is completely stable, with no slipping, no rocking and no falling out. Speaking and chewing are unaffected.

With an implant-supported denture or fixed bridge, there is no longer any need to use adhesives or to be concerned about teeth that move.

Implants improve your appearance, your speech, the ability to enjoy your favorite foods, your comfort and your self-esteem. That’s more than enough to make you smile.

Gum disease is a chronic bacterial infection that is a major cause of tooth loss in adults and triggers an inflammatory response in your body. Scientists believe it may be linked to other inflammatory diseases such as heart disease and stroke, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, respiratory diseases, cancers, arthritis, and osteoporosis. As if this weren’t worrisome enough, research suggests that the incidence of gum disease may be 2-3 times higher than previously thought. This is alarming because only about 3% of those afflicted seek treatment.

The abutment is attached to the exposed anchor during the second surgery.

The anchor is placed into the jawbone during the first surgery. Over the next six months the bone cells grow closely around the anchor, holding it firmly in place.

If you, or someone you know, is a denture wearer, you should be aware that there is new evidence that denture adhesives may be hazardous to your health and that the Food and Drug Administration is taking action.

The culprit is zinc, which is found in a number of denture creams, and the risk can be avoided with dental implants.

Both ABC News’ “World News with Diane Sawyer” and “Good Morning America” recently reported that long term and excessive use of zinc-containing denture adhesives could result in “serious and irreversible neurological damage.”

The FDA, which has received hundreds of complaints that long term overuse of one popular denture adhesive containing zinc caused serious nerve damage, is urging manufacturers of all denture creams with zinc to remove it from their products.

According to the FDA, consumers most at risk include people using

excessive amounts of zinc-containing products over extended periods of time and people with poor fitting dentures.l l l The package labeling may not list zinc as an ingredient.l l l Users may not be aware that overexposure to zinc may lead to zinc toxicity, which may result in adverse health effects.l l l Adverse events may not manifest themselves for months to years while using the product and consumers may assume such events are caused by something other than the denture adhesive.

We have welcomed news for denture wearers who are concerned about the effects of zinc toxicity and who will appreciate no longer to have to use any adhesives: we can easily add as few as two dental implants beneath a denture – providing a level of retention, security and comfort impossible to achieve with adhesives.

These dental implants, which act as anchors to which the denture is firmly attached, can truly be life altering for long-suffering denture wearers.

If you’re in your fifties, you probably think of dentistry as the science of drilling and filling. But if you take a careful look at the dental office on your next visit, you’ll notice that a lot more time is being spent on the look of teeth than ever before. With modern dental care, teeth are staying healthier longer, and cosmetic techniques are getting faster, better and less expensive. That explains why a lot of people in their fifties and older are investing in esthetically enhanced smiles. Many of them are finding that altering the shape, color or position of teeth not only improves appearance and function, but also the way they feel about themselves.

There are a number of cosmetic services to consider. Bonding and contouring can deal with deep-rooted stains or patch up small cracks or chips and can even fill gaps and reshape teeth. Whitening can give just about anyone a brighter, whiter smile. For teeth that are
