WORDS FROM FRED

The 2014 grape harvest looks to be excellent. We have had one of the driest Septembers on record with many warm sunny days resulting in enhanced ripening of the grapes. This great weather combined with a smaller crop should result in outstanding quality wines from 2014.

We received over 100 gold medals this year in national and international wine competitions. The current inventory of wines also received many 90 + ratings. It is very gratifying to read the many accolades the winery has received this year. I believe our winery and the Finger Lakes wine region have reached a tipping point where the wines are now considered among the best produced in the United States. I am sure that Konstantin is smiling down from the heavens with pride over the progress we have made in continuing his legacy. There will be a book coming out early next year about Dr. Konstantin Frank. We will have a book signing by the author at the winery as soon as it is released. There is another book that already is available, “Circle of Vines” by Richard Figiel about the history of New York wine that I highly recommend you add to your reading list as well.

We have a number of family members contributing to Dr. Frank’s Winery success. I have been the president for over 20 years. My daughter, Meaghan, is now the general manager. My sister, Barbara, is our regional sales manager in the New York City area and consults with our sparkling wines. My cousin, Eric, is our vineyard manager, and is celebrating his 35th year here. We also have a great team of employees who share our family’s commitment for producing world class wines.

We were blessed with a great day for our Wine Club picnic this summer. It was wonderful to see so many fans of the winery coming from all over the country. I enjoyed speaking with many of them about stories of their meetings with Konstantin and Willy. Everyone enjoyed a barrel tasting with our winemaker and an educational cheese and wine tasting. The gourmet lunch was prepared by Chef Richard Lehrman accompanied by gold medal winning Dr. Frank wines on our deck overlooking the old vine vineyards and beautiful Keuka Lake. Please read all the other benefits associated with the Dr. Frank Wine Club in the newsletter. I hope you will be joining us at our next event.

As the holidays approach I hope you will share our wines with your friends and family. I invite you to visit us and taste our gold medal winning wines with our friendly and knowledgeable staff. Our wines are also available at many fine wine shops and restaurants or can be ordered online.

I wish you and your family all the best for a happy and healthy year.

Cheers,

Fred FrankPresident

2012RedsA Standout Vintage

2012 was a standout year for reds due to the length of the growing season, consisent sun and warmth throughout the year. We knew some truly special red wines would come out of that year and when we popped the corks on these wines for the first time this fall, our jaws dropped. These aren’t just good wines, but beautiful complex reds that show just how good red wine can be in the Finger Lakes under the right conditions.

2012 Pinot Noir - Medium intensity with red fruits dominant characters of sour cherry and strawberry, supported by subtle forest floor, smoke, clove and game notes. The elegant spiciness of the European oak en-hances the complexity of this well rounded wine.

2012 Pinot Meunier - Red fruit dominant characters of sour cherry and strawberry, supported by subtle flo-ral, menthol, clove and cinnamon notes. The light oak influence balances the delicacy of the fruit characters and enhances the texture.

2012 Merlot - Medium intensity with black fruits dominant characters of blackberry marmalade, plum and aniseed notes; supported by strong earthy forest floor and sage characters and complimented by a mocha undertone.

2012 Cabernet Franc - Blackcurrant and black cherry notes are supported by dried herb, chocolate , fennel, and subtle perfumed undertones. The combination of European and American oak adds layers of spicy flavors.

2012 Cabernet Sauvignon- Bold, earthy and struc-tured are just a few words to describe this wine. On the nose, sour cherry, green pepper and moss stand out. On the palate, this wine is tight up front with flavors of moss, black currant and anis.

In the Frank family, it has always been important for milestones to be celebrated. Konstantin Frank’s legacy has long been celebrated, but Willy Frank’s legacy is to be equally applauded. Like his father, Willy was a Finger Lakes wine pioneer. But rather than follow in his father’s shoes, Willy set out to pave his own path. Willy’s dream was to make methode champenoise sparkling wine from vinifera grapes in the Finger Lakes. At the time (early 1980’s), the Finger Lakes was not making methode cham-penoise from vinifera. Willy set out to make sparkling wine that would rival even the best French champagne using the three traditional champagne grapes: Chardon-nay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. Willy released his first sparkling wine in 1985 and over the past thirty years, the Chateau Frank brand has become one of the most prestigous sparkling brands in New York State. Chateau Frank sparkling wines have won many awards and have been featured in the White house, on the Today Show and much more.

Chateau Frank sparkling wines deserve every bit of pres-tige considering the labor intensiveness involved in the production of each bottle. All Chateau Frank wines are disgorged by hand and hand riddled. By the time a Cha-teau Frank sparkling wine reaches the market, it has aged between 2-6 years.

2015 will be a year to celebrate Willy and the beautiful sparkling wines still produced at Chateau Frank today. We will keep you updated on any special Chateau Frank releases and events in the year ahead.

In the mean time, we hope you’ll raise a glass (of Chateau Frank) this holiday season in salute of Willy, one of the Finger Lakes great wine pioneers. Cheers!
