There is an increasing interest from school children in robotics which needs to be encouraged and channelized. As a University and Technical Institute it is our responsibility to take initiatives which support, recognize and reward young talent in this field. The Nirma RoboCup is the first step in this direction to bring the young talent in the country on one forum, to compete on innovative design problems thereby encouraging their interest in this field.

The Institute of Technology, Nirma University established in 1995 is a leading hub of education, ranked in the top 10 self-financed engineering colleges of India and amongst the top 3 in the State, by various ranking agencies. It offers undergraduate, post graduate and PhD programmes in Computer Science and Enginrring, Mechanical, Electronics and Communication, Instrumentation and Control, Electrical, Civil and Chemical Engineering. The institute is known for its excellent teaching-learning pedagogy, state of the art infrastructure, progressive curriculum and discipline.

Institute of Technology has proven expertise in Robotics. Team Nirma Robocon regularly participates in the International Robotics competition ‘ABU Robocon’ since its inception in 2002. Team Nirma has won the National Championship eight times so far and represented India at various countries like Japan (2002), Thailand (2003), Malaysia (2006), India (2008), Thailand (2011), India (2014), Indonesia (2015), Vietnam (2018). Team Nirma also participates in the National level HMI based automation design competition organized by Mitsubishi Electric, India and are consistent winners of the Mitsubishi Silver Cup three times in a row. Autonomous Under Water Vehicle is yet another competition where the team of Nirma participates at national and international level. The Institute is in the process of establishing a Centre of Robotics andAutomation as a central research facility in the field of robotics.

Every year, the Nirma RoboCup will have a new theme, testing the innovative skills of students to design and build a Robot performing different tasks of increasing difficulty levels. This year’s theme draws inspiration from Lord Krishna whose fondness for butter is well known. He was known to gather his friends, make a team, prepare a human pyramid to reach the butter pot hanging at a height and break it using his flute to get hold of the butter. The effort required hard work, strategy and teamwork to succeed. Through this theme students will understand the value of a well thought out plan, commitment and teamwork in reaching the goal.

The match will be held between two teams playing in the RED and BLUE zone respectively. Each match will last no longer than five minutes (after which the scores will be counted and the winner will be announced). Each team will have either a manual or an automatic robot. The robot will be designed to carry a long stick symbolizing the flute of Lord Krishna. The robot will have to start from the START zone named as ‘MATHURA’. It will follow the path on the game field in the respective RED or BLUE zone till the first butter cube is found. The robot will push the butter cube to the ‘FRIEND’ zone.

It will then continue on the path to enter the ‘GOKUL’ zone till it finds and passes the second butter cube to FRIENDS zone. Going ahead the robot will reach the ‘VRINDAVAN’ zone to reach the tree (symbolic) with a small butter pot placed on it. The robot will knock out the small butter pot from the top of the ‘TREE’ into FRIENDS zone and enter the final, ‘BARSANA’ zone. After reaching ‘BARSANA’, the Robot will climb a slope to reach the ‘BARSANA HILL’. The Robot will attempt its final task of hitting the hanging butter pot with its stick twice. The team which accomplishes the above task first will be the winner of the game and will be given the title of ‘GOVINDA’. More details on rules of the game are given in the rule book.
