Hotel d’Angleterre

By Brad Beaty

This was my first trip ever to Copenhagen, and after 2 short

(literally, the sun went down by 3:45pm) and long nights, I cannot

wait to return. It is said that this is the happiest place on earth, and the greenest

city on our planet. I could not help but make the connection between the two while observing the people and lifestyle of this very cultural and vibrant city.Sitting as the centerpiece of Denmark’s capitol is the Hotel d’Angleterre. From the outside, it is majestic, classical, and during the Holiday Season, very impressive with its themed decoration, which this year was the Nutcracker. Stepping inside, one might expect a grand lobby with very traditional furnishings, but that is not so here. The reception was created to make each guest feel they are the only and most important. The entrance hall is full of life with the main bar full of locals and hotel guests alike, some waiting for tables at the Michelin-starred restaurant Marchal, others there to meet a friend at a stylish and vibrant “place to be” in the city center. The hotel was buzzing, and it felt good to be there! This was the happy part of Copenhagen. After checking in I was personally escorted to my grand suite (thank you Lucas and Ignacio!) where I was delighted to feel right

at home. The balcony overlooked the main city square and wrapped around the living area to the bedroom. Decorated in soothing tones of “Purple and Pistachio”! The lush comfortable linens, heated marble floor, peacefulness of being in this luxurious space while in the heart of the city made it difficult to decide whether to enjoy being so spoiled or get out and start exploring the city. Luckily, I had time to compromise and do both!Although Spring through Fall are Copenhagen’s busiest period due to pre-and post cruises and the long hours of daylight, I thoroughly enjoyed the energy, decorations, outdoor markets and great spirit of the people during the pre-Festive Season in early December. While there we took a tour of “Cool Copenhagen”, which took us into the real neighborhoods similar to Soho or Williamsburg areas of New York to see how the new generation is molding and caring for this small. Everywhere, it seemed that food was a central theme. From the low-key coffee houses to the creative food markets, it was evident that every generations socialization tended to be around food and all about trying something unique, but of significant quality. Copenhagen’s chefs have more Michelin stars than almost any other city in the world! To get to these different areas surrounding the city center, there were people walking and bicycling everywhere. Rarely did I see anyone walking down the street with their head

buried in their smartphone. Even atop the “bicycle parking lot” they city had planted grass to improve the air quality. It was becoming clear why Copenhagen was voted the “happiest and greenest” city.Although I could go on and on about this wonderful city, I wanted to share what I learned most importantly about the Hotel d’Angleterre. It’s difficult to put into words how this hotel’s owners and the management team, as well as every person working there, understand that being the centerpiece of Copenhagen comes with a responsibility to provide not only it’s discerning guests, but the locals who stop in for a coffee on and to warm up after shopping on the Strøget street, or unwind and socialize over cocktails at the trendy Balthazar Champagne Bar, that this hotel is so unique in that it feels like their own. It is part of the culture, and thus the service has had to be adjust to make everyone feel this “ownership”. It was so impressive how natural it all seemed.

BORNA STAR

By Sari Freeman

I was so excited to get back to St Barth’s and experience Le Barthélemy. I hadn’t visited

since just after my honeymoon in Bora Bora. I adored it, and in fact wondered, why I had gone half way around the world, when heaven could be found, so much closer! This time around, my flight to St Barth’s was

far smoother than the one I had remembered! I must admit I was dreading it, but Tradewinds via San Juan, was fabulous! We just seemed to float down between the hills and the sea like an autumn leaf. I was met by a charming driver who drove up and around the hilly roads by gorgeous seascape views, passing through the hubbub of St Jean, to the quieter Grand Cul-de-Sac. There she was, nestled to one side of the bay, our little piece of paradise, on 600 ft of beach front property, Le Barthélemy! As we drove up to the stunning “water wall”, we knew “we had arrived!”; I stepped out of the car, when my gaze was immediately drawn to the clear blue water beckoning me to walk down a short pathway, featuring a gorgeous fountain, opening to the beach and sea.

T h i s stunning resort, was a feat of love and determination. The private owners, spared no expense including tearing out and rebuilding whatever was not perfect. Within just a few months, we succeeded in being selected as one of the T&L’s “It List” hotels!Le Barthélemy was inspirationally decorated by Sybille de Margerie, a very accomplished French designer (of recent Ritz Paris fame)! The result is a mélange of French style and sophistication with the open air ambiance of St Barths, along with a touch of whimsy! Lucky for us, 80% of the rooms/suites face the sea. Each of the 46 rooms is an oasis of sophisticated comfort and relaxation. Starting from 600 and going to 1500 sq. ft., the rooms boast an amazing outdoor

space, enclosed by an invisible screen, allowing you to leave your door open all day and night if you wished. These areas, 6 of which include private plunge pools have amazing loungers, combo bean bag and chaise lounge, a table with two chairs to enjoy a drink or meal. All rooms are gorgeous but the plunge pools add an air of romance. My facial by La Mer was

a superb e x p e r i e n c e , a 90-minute event that left me completely relaxed and my face and neck feeling like velvet! The 4 treatment rooms, are stunningly decorated with ceilings covered with tiny star-like lights and walls feature beautiful natural wood carvings. During the day and at night, everyone gravitates to the outdoor area of restaurant, where you are invited to overlook the water from the deck built above the beach. You almost feel like you are on a boat, as all you are seeing is the sea and surrounding bay. The interior of the restaurant is beautiful; with the star of the show being the crystal blue glass chandelier representing a school

ISof fish swimming. The drinks are wonderful; the signature is the “Ménage a Trois” where you create the drink yourself from three test tubes placed in a frozen block of ice. The stunning infinity pool overlooks the sea and ends in a small waterfall spilling down to the beach, you feel as though you are swimming into the sea. One night we had a fabulous BBQ, that was a feast of lobster and had a fire show on the beach - 600ft of white sand overlooking the bay. The designers, brilliantly created a boardwalk, with two levels, featuring the requisite lounge chairs and umbrellas, as well as day beds for two and a few rocking chairs, on the top level, all designed to relax and enjoy the view and beach. Claire Hillau, our DOS, organized an incredible day around the island. We started with Genevieve

the local “Spirit of St Barths“, who toured us around, but we can’t tell you everything, you must discover it for yourself! We then toured the island by sea on a stunning private yacht, sailing around fabulous coves, swimming and snorkeling. The picnic basket the hotel provided was a work of art and can easily be organized for those renting

cars to beach hop, which is a must on the island. St Barths is a dreamy combination of the South of France with the even more relaxed ambiance of the Caribbean. It is a little piece of exclusive heaven, and are very proud to represent the newest luxury addition to the island.

“Le Barthelemy Hotel & Spa is truly a perfected pristine paradise from their unparalleled

hospitality, unforgettable culinary excellence and top-notch service down to the details

of their ever-present signature sand dollar motif. The property’s hypnotizing blue hues are

truly memorable from the deep sapphire tea lights dotted across the dining terraces, vibrant aqua art displays, tranquil teal accents, crystalline pool waters and the cobalt Caribbean that seamlessly blends into an infinite indigo horizon at dusk.” - Julia Gregorian

One of the worst aspects of my job as an Owner of Passages of Distinction is arriving at one of our amazing hotels, being assigned a luxurious

suite, but being alone and having only one night to enjoy the luxuries…but, as they say, “somebody’s gotta do it”! Just after ILTM, I had to go see our new Hotel Metropole in Geneva for the first time, and as I was connecting

in Paris on the way home, why not go stop to see our good friend Severine and get an update on the Grand Hotel du Palais Royal!First stop – Geneva and the Hotel Metropole. The Hotel is owned by the city of Geneva, and recently the town council has decided that this hotel with its prime location should be to this city as the Hotel d’Angleterre is to Copenhagen…they center landmark and cultural highlight. Thus, who better to call on then Mrs. Remmen, the Owner of the Hotel d’Angleterre to bring in her management team, and her elegant personal taste to make this happen! It has been many years since I had the pleasure of visiting this great city. We often think of it as a corporate destination for financiers and visitors to the UN. However, there is much more to this city, most obvious it’s natural beauty surrounding the lake. The Hotel Metropole is located on the “right” side of the lake and is the only 5-star hotel with this privileged location. One side of the hotel is lake-front, while on the other is the famous Rue de Rhone, the 5th Avenue” of Geneva lined with every high-end designer boutique, along with ultra-high-end watchmakers only found in Switzerland. The rooms are not cookie cutter, but are not complicated in terms of categories. My personal recommendation is to start with the Lifestyle Lakeside category as these provide a combination of artful décor and modern bathrooms, and plenty of space. Junior suites are very nice with a designated sitting area, not just a sofa added to a room, and called a suite. The rooftop 5 Lounge is a highlight, particularly during the warmer months (April through September) for their chic, young clientele and unmatched views over the lake and the city. One of my favorite spots was the Mirror Bar, just off the lobby. In vibrant Red, but not overly ornate, the locals find this a welcoming place to gather socially, and the guests find it a comfortable place to meet and relax. After a wonderful dinner in the French inspired Gusto with my hosts Ignacio Gutierrez from the Hotel d’Angleterre and Bruno Tailly, Director of Sales of the

Metropole, I retired for a brief few hours until our morning tour of the quaint second property they manage, the Parc Hotel des Eaux-Vives, where plans are in the works for a wonderful extension of the guest experience at the Metropole. In the meantime, this gorgeous property is ideal for a lakefront wedding, event, and has 7 rooms on the upper floor should a family wish to privatize their stay in a “countryside” style setting just 5 minutes from the heard of Geneva. Off to the city of Lights and Love…. PARISAs I said above, nothing is more rewarding than checking into one of our hotels, and in this case, the Grand Hotel du Palais Royal’s “Palais Royal Suite” alone! This was my third visit to the hotel, and first time in one of the hotel’s top two signature suites.

Our dear Severine welcomed a small group of top travel professionals who had been there for the day touring their way through Paris. She is always the perfect hostess making certain that each of us felt as if we were her own personal guest, and that we were. (Plus, she never forgets my personal love of Maison du Chocolat, and there was a box set on my bed at turndown!) We were treated to a fantastic dinner in the hotel’s Le Lulli restaurant with the twinkling lights of the courtyard providing our ambience. I must say that for a boutique hotel in a sea of competitors, this hotel never has ceased to exceed my expectations each time, and that included the food at our private dinner. Every detail is looked after as if it were the

private Palais of a Royal. Thus, a very fitting name it has, indeed. Having such a small amount of time to enjoy, I wanted to spend it all in my beautiful suite, so there was no need to see anything in Paris I could not see from my private terrace. What a life it is to be sitting on my private terrace overlooking the rooftops of Paris with the Eiffel Tower glimmering in the background. I remember thinking to myself, it’s no wonder at all why every agent we hear from has guests that love staying at this gem…the serenity of the location on a quiet street 2 blocks from the Louvre Museum, and warm, not invisible, service is a perfect combination. As a final note, thanks to our friends Julien Pieve and Moatez Khalek at Deluxe Drivers for supplying my transfers throughout France with handsome chauffeurs and stylish Mercedes-Benz vehicles! We can always count on these guys to be there, on-time, and with big smiles!

We are thrilled to have recently added a new hotel in Switzerland to our Collection, The Park Gstaad. Gstaad was a place I dreamt about visiting as I grew up, since my father would tell

stories about traveling there and skiing with the Olympic skier, Jean Claude Killy!  It wasn’t until I had the chance to attend Virtuoso Symposium, about 20 years ago, that I finally visited for the first time!

Gstaad, Is a charming picturesque Swiss town in the mountains, yet very sophisticated at the same time.  With it’s gorgeous country-side setting, this exclusive yet laid-back ski town is equally popular in summer and winter. It attracts a very chic young and vibrant European and international crowd ……Yet, being Swiss, they are very proud to say that Gstaad, has as many cows as people!  There is another wonderful coincidence here that has come into play and that is during my stay, so many years ago,

we met an impressive young Sales Manager, named Daniel Ziegler, at the Grand Hotel Park where I stayed.  Well, as fate would have it, Daniel re-cently returned to the newly relaunched Park Gstaad (the former Grand Hotel Park) as the General Manager, and we are now working together! The hotel is owned by one of the most prominent women in Switzerland. A member of Leading Hotels of the World, the hotel has been renovated in a very understated and elegant way. The ideal home away from home for those who prefer to remain anonymous.  We are very proud to represent the newly recreated Park Gstaad and hope to make you and your discerning clients welcome there very soon!

Located amidst the true countryside of Portugal, only about an hour from Porto,

in the town of Vidago, resides a Palace. Commissioned by King Carlos the 1st, who set out to create a luxury spa resort to take advantage of the waters in the area, which at the time were of great national importance. The Vidago Palace officially opened its doors in 1910, the same year that established the Portuguese Republic. From the start the hotel exuded an ambiance and atmosphere that was

worthy of kings. In 1936, a 9-hole golf course was added by the famous architect Philip Mackenzie Ross. This addition along with the state-of-the-art accommodations, and advanced thermal treatments quickly put the Vidago Palace among the most prestigious European Resorts in the world at the time. The legend of the hotel only grew during the post war years due to the exclusive and famous events and parties that were held there, attracting the elite from all over the world. In 2006, the hotel closed its doors for a four-year

renovation, to modernize amenities, renovate and redesign rooms, and restore the hotel’s glamour and architectural heritage to a level that is equal to its historic stature. The hotel reopened in 2010, exactly a hundred years after its original debut. Guests were treated to an authentic journey back in time. With 70 magnificent rooms and suites, a majestic gastronomy program, a modern thermal spa where the mineral waters of the town are still central to its appeal, an expanded 18- hole golf course, hiking and biking trails - a living legend was reestablished! Discover the Vidago, a hidden palace in the woods.

36 Hours of Luxury in Geneva & Paris

Hotel d’Angleterre
