the DPac studio encourages broad-based thinking about urban design and planning. AsLandscapeArchitectsandArchitectswecollaborateinaprocessofresearch, communityparticipation, urban and site inventory, analysis, programming, siteplanning, designandrecommendationsforprojectimplementation. Wetacklethedesignprocessatmultiplescalesasweconsiderregionaltrendsandcharacteristics, transportationissues, economicconditions, uniquedevelopmentandarchitecturalpatterns, localhistory, communityclimate, andcommunitygoalsviathestakeholders.

Thisyear(2012),theStudioreturnedtotwopreviousDPACcommunities—DoñaAnaVillageanddowntownLasCruces.Addressingthesecommunitiesconcurrentlythistimepresentedtheopportunitytoconsiderhowtheyareconnectedand the context they share.

IncooperationwiththeNewMexicoMainstreetProgramandlocalcommunityorganizations,DPACstudentsheldconversationswithlocalstakeholders, studiedthecommunitiesandtheirlarger context (in person and through secondary sources) to identify assets and challenges, and uncover strategies that build upon the region’s history and existing strengths, preserve and restorevaluableecologies, makethemostofscarceresources(water),andmakeplacesthataresaferandmorecomfortableforresidents, businessowners, andvisitorsalike.

while Doña ana village and the city of las CrucesliewithinthesameMesillaValley, emergefromthesamehistory, andsharethesamewatershed, theyareverydifferentplaces.
