Since its inception the Greenbushes Fun Run and MTB has raised more than $60,000 for charity with past beneficiaries being Breast Cancer Network Australia, South West Autism Association, Sock it to Sarcoma and Telethon Kids Institute.

Last year there were more than 300 participants across the categories with the 5km walk/run attracting the most competitors.

The 2020 event goes back to its roots with all funds raised being allocated to Breast Cancer Network Australia.

Art and Craft Centre NewsBridgetown Art & Craft Centre will be holding a Street

Stall on Saturday 21st March between 8.30 am and 1.30 pm at the Community Kiosk in Hampton Street.

Members will be selling varied items of craft and sewing articles that are produced at their centre; Home produce, edible treats, plants and Country Treasures will also be on sale.

A fabulous raffle, with a choice of a hand painted designer hand bag or a unique felted scarf or a Royal Daulton cup, saucer and plate will be available for you to purchase tickets in the draw.

All funds raised are going to assist the members with the cost of connecting Bridgetown Art & Craft Centre to the town’s sewerage.

The centre is always welcoming new members. So come along either Tuesdays or Thursdays from 10am to visit us, have a cuppa, chat and maybe you might then want to join our friendly group. You could even refresh your skills or learn that craft you always wanted to attempt.

Bridgetown CaresA small group of likeminded local people have joined

together to fund raise money for fi re and drought aff ected people and animals throughout Australia.

Earlier in the year we got together and decided what our purpose and goals would be and we chose a name, 'Bridgetown Cares'.

Bridgetown Cares is now planning to hold a swap meet function on an “event” scale, It will be held on March 29th at the Bridgetown Show grounds between 8am and 3pm.

We are inviting any member of the community from Bridgetown and surrounding towns to join in by having a stall, selling their goods and then donating proceeds or part proceeds to the cause. There will not be a charge to have a stall and entry to the showgrounds will also be free of charge.

It is hoped that community groups will join us; support is being off ered from groups such as CWA (Greenbushes) and Rotary who will assist us with the distribution of the funds raised. We will be holding raffl es and a silent auction and there will be entertainment, music and hopefully much, much more.

The four recipients will be Families of fi refi ghters who have lost their lives fi ghting fi res, The Kangaroo Island

Wildlife Park, the Burrumbuttock Hay Runners and the group Litres for the Land.

All funds raised will be divided equally between these groups with the assistance of Rotary (a licensed charitable organisation).

If you would like more information they can join us and like us our Facebook page, Bridgetown Cares.

To book a stall or donate items for raffl e or auction please call Diane on 0450428946. Christine

RED CROSS NEWSBlack summer – Thank God it is nearly over! It is an apt

phrase for what the country has been through since September of last year. Thirty three people have lost their lives. There have been 2639 houses destroyed and many more severely damaged. Millions of animals both wild and domestic have been wiped out. More than 13milion hectares of land have gone under fire. The worst damage has occurred in NSW.

The Australian Red Cross has been tasked to allocate the funds ($127million as of 3rd Feb) donated by people and businesses throughout the country for relief and recovery. Over the past 100+ years the Red Cross has developed into a highly regarded professional organisation which concerns itself with humanitarian issues. In many instances it is need due to natural disasters.

In the immediate response to the disasters the Red Cross provides 24/7 support including evacuations, relief centres and outreach services. Many trained volunteers are involved in these tasks. Although $5m had been allocated to assist with this, so far $12.8million has been distributed as emergency grants to people severely impacted by the fires.

There has been $50million allocated to support those whose homes have been destroyed and $10million to make structurally damaged homes safe to return to. $1million has been put aside for bereaved payments and $500k to support those hospitalised for injuries as a result from fires.

It will be a long road ahead for the affected communities. People will need help and support long into the future to be able to return to a valued existence. For the mid- to long-term recovery process $42.5million is to be allocated to further immediate and longer term bushfire assistance and $18million to support community recovery for a period of at least three years. Council Meeting 27TH FebruaryThe basis of this column has always been to encourage

Ratepayers to attend the monthly Council Meetings and at the February meeting it was heartening to see an attendance of nine well up from the usual two or three.

As happens periodically the meeting was mainly what I call `nuts and bolts` and not too riveting at that. However if anyone is thinking of putting a sea container on their property they had better check with the Council fi rst as the Council`s position has changed slightly, continued page 11

Celebrating 20 years!Come to the Cidery and help us celebrate our milestone

20th Birthday at our annual St. Patrick’s Day party on Tuesday 17 March from 11.00am to late.

If you have any Irish in you or simply enjoy a party, then make sure you don’t miss an afternoon and evening of fun, song and friendship!

Proudly owned by the Corrigan, Vowles and Lucey families since 2000 we are looking forward to sharing our 20th anniversary and success with friends and the valued Bridgetown community.

“It has been an exciting journey with many highlights” said partner John Lucey. “One of our aims when we started was to value add to our community by promoting Bridgetown’s rich history and help develop our tourism industry”.

“It has been very rewarding to help grow our region’s reputation as a premier tourism destination over the last 20 years”.

“We are extremely proud of the fantastic Cidery team who have been an integral part of our success over the years.”

Celebrations include live Irish music starting at 12.00pm and an Irish themed menu for lunch and dinner to satisfy the most Irish of Irish, together with award winning Porter Ale and Irish Red Ale and Poor Man’s Black Velvet (Porter and Bubbly) as a great accompaniment!

There will plenty of room for dancing and there is always a chance of winning the prize for the Best Irish Costume!

St Patrick’s Day wouldn’t be right without great Irish music, great Irish food, great drinks and of course great friendship. So, make sure you join in for a day of fun, merriment and music on Tuesday 17th March at The Cidery.

Show TalkThe survey conducted at the 2019 Show, concluding on

20th December, resulted in 106 responses. Thank you to those who took the time to give constructive feedback. The Strategic plan/Funding Sub-committee will be reviewing the results with some participants receiving a follow up call. Rochelle Bell was the winner of the community voucher which was decided by using Google random number picker.

The secretary’s new email address is not on the website yet, as there are still some security issues. The email address is still transitioning to the new one and both are being monitored while we work on the problems.

Rabbit damage, while not usually an issue in town, has now become a big issue at the Showgrounds with the rabbits taking up residence under the Junior Farmers Hall causing paving to collapse and visiting dogs causing bigger problems trying to dig out the holes. The Secretary is following up with the Blackwood Biosecurity Group to see if they can off er assistance with the rabbit plague.

Dogs at the show ground will now be limited to the oval only. This might help reduce the number of dogs doing their business near our offi ces and sheds. Once signage is up it will also make it easier to tell people directly to move to the oval.

On behalf of a community group named “Bridgetown Cares” the show grounds will be the venue for a fundraising event (proposed Sunday 29th March) for those aff ected by fi re and drought. Markets/car boot sale, music, entertainment, drinks, food and much more. Look out for online posts and fl yers advertising the event. The organisers are looking for item donations and if you can contribute or assist in any way, they will appreciate you making contact. Continued page 14

Levelling the Accommodation Playing Field In response to issues raised by a number of regional tourism providers, last year I requested a Parliamentary inquiry into the short stay accommodation sector. This resulted in a report outlining the impact of online booking platforms and unregistered and un-hosted accommodation providers. I am pleased the government has accepted nine of the ten recommendations, with a working group developing a state-wide registration scheme. This will provide confidence to consumers that all properties meet regulated standards and operate on a level playing field. Early intervention needed for Mental Health It is important regional people with mental health issues have timely access to professional treatment. With the identified increase in drug use, related and non-related mental health issues, self harm incidents and suicide attempts in this region, it is vital resources are available to support people. The Government must do more in this space and address the need for psychiatric support in acute situations as well as long-term support strategies to keep people safe. I call on the government to increase funding for youth programs, early intervention programs, as well as ensure appropriately quali-fied staff are available to support people in crisis situations. Regional Impact of Coronavirus The Coronavirus is having an impact across the world, and whilst we can be thankful there are no cases here, the impact is still being felt in our region. The tourism industry has taken a massive hit with not only Chinese tourist cancelling visits, but many international tourists choosing not to travel. Our small businesses, wine industry and fresh produce export markets have all been affected. Industrial Manslaughter Bill The new industrial manslaughter bill will be scrutinised by a Parliamentary committee after I raised concerns regarding the unintended consequences the legislation may have on small business and the agricultural sector. I believe workplace injuries and deaths due to negligence should have strong consequences, but the bill as it stands needs further analysis.

Council Meeting continued from page 6Chatting to a group after the Meeting they were wondering what went on in the Behind Closed Doors section at the end of the meeting where the Gallery were requested to leave.

Basically it`s when the Council discusses matters such as sales or purchase of properties/legal issues/staff matters or personal aff airs of individual Ratepayers or any other matter considered confi dential.

What that means is a Ratepayer needing Shire guidance can go to the CEO or President to discuss the matter and be confi dent that, should the matter require further discussion with the rest of the Council it will be done Behind Closed Doors.Let`s try for twelve in March! Jann Barry aka The Watcher

Tuning In To Teens Parenting Workshop

Tuning in to Teens, is used as an intervention to prevent adolescent mental health problems. Parenting and parent-adolescent relationships have an important infl uence on adolescent wellbeing, and problems in either are closely associated with poorer emotional functioning in the young person. Tuning in to Teens aims to teach parents how to assist their adolescent in understanding and managing their emotions while also helping parents with their own emotional reactions to their teen. The program also aims to improve communication between parent and adolescent, especially around times of confl ict.

The program provides parents with a greater understanding of their teen’s emotional experiences while teaching specifi c skills that can assist in being supportive, empathic and staying connected with the young person. It further aims to improve parent’s emotional awareness, regulation and communication style and provide them with an opportunity to refl ect on their own emotion socialisation experience

The timing of the program is intended to provide parents with necessary skills for responding optimally to the young person during times of confl ict. Enhancing these skills with parents at a time just before the peak period of parent-adolescent confl ict (around Years 7- 9), and before many adolescent mental health problems begin. It is expected that when parents use emotion coaching skills it will assist the young person in managing emotions, reduce family confl ict, and minimise the onset of mental health problems in the adolescent.

The workshop was designed after the success of the original workshop – Tuning in to Kids for parents of the younger age group.

Both programs generated from the Melbourne University after decades of research, are evidence based and used Australia wide.

Tuning in to Teens Parenting Workshop is a Free 5 Session Parenting Program for Parents of Children Aged 11 -16 and will be held on 9th March, 2020 and every Monday following, for 5 weeks. Refresher class early May, between 6.00pm – 8.00pm, the work shop is free, to register: call Lisa on 0400939266 or [email protected]

will go back in to the fund and no more than 10c in the dollar will be used for admin costs. Although many of our workers are volunteers, legal adherence and transparent allocation of funding requires qualifi ed personnel within a professional organisation.

Our local unit of the Australian Red Cross participates in the annual March Appeal. To this end we will be holding a street collection on Friday 13th March and our Annual Quiz nite on Friday the 20th March. We also run a footy tipping competition – books are now available from Bridgetown Meat Supply - and a business collection. This year the Bushfi re relief fund will be the recipient of the bulk of the funds.

The Quiz nite is a lot of fun. First prize is a dinner for six at the Bridgetown Hotel. Entry is $10, tables of 6, legendary supper included, bar in operation and lots of raffl e prizes! See you there.

Ant BlitzWant to know what your problem ants are and how

to control them? Or simply keen to contribute to ant surveillance in WA?

Our Department is running an Ant Blitz from the 24 February to 3 April 2020 and is encouraging samples and reports of unfamiliar ants in WA. If you have an ant problem in your property and have been struggling with control – why not collect a sample, submit it to our department and we will tell you what they are and how to control them (if needed).

Unless you know the species of ant, control can be guesswork, time consuming, and sadly you can waste a fair bit of money trying diff erent products. Sending in samples for identifi cation can help you choose the right product.

By submitting samples, you can also learn about the types of ants at your property and contribute to ant surveillance in WA. The recent detection of two exotic and problematic species; Red Imported Fire Ants (RIFA) and Browsing ants in WA, is testament to the ability of ants to arrive in WA via freight and cargo. Their rapid detection provides the best chance of eradication and preventing the economic, social and environmental impacts of these ants – so help with surveillance to keep the world’s worst ants out of WA!

Sampling InstructionsBrush ants into a sealed container or zip lock bag and

place in the freezer for 1 hour.Label samples with the collection location (e.g.

backyard, kitchen, bathroom, driveway etc.), your name, contact number, email address and postal address.

Deliver or post to: Ant Blitz, Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, Pest and Disease Information Service, 3 Baron-Hay Court, South Perth WA 6151.

Further information can be found at agric.wa.gov.au and search ‘ant control’ or contact our Pest and Disease Information Service on (08) 9368 3080 or [email protected] .

Calendar GirlsCalendar Girls Play is based on the true story of eleven

Women's Institute (WI) members who posed nude for a calendar to raise money for the Leukaemia Research Fund

It begins when Annie's husband John dies of leukaemia and she and her best friend Chris resolve to raise money for a new sofa in the local hospital waiting room

They manage to persuade four fellow Women's Institute members to pose nude with them for an 'alternative' calendar with a little help from shy hospital porter and amateur photographer Lawrence.

The news of the women's charitable venture spreads like wildfire, and soon hordes of Press descend on the small Yorkshire village, the calendar quickly becomes a huge success; But Chris and Annie's friendship is put to the test under the strain of their new-found fame.

Now this fabulous play has come to Bridgetown Repertory Club and will be directed by Robert Benson-Parry who describes Calendar Girls as a modern and worthwhile play.

This year, 2020 is also the twentieth anniversary of the Yorkshire WI producing the calendar.

Calendar Girls plays at 8pm on March 5th, 6th, 7th, 12th, 13th, 14th and matinees at 2pm on March 8th and 15th.

Tickets are $20 and $15 concession and can be booked through the Bridgetown Visitors Centre 97611740 or online at trybooking.com – follow the links on the Bridgetown Repertory Club website.
