From 2000-2004, the Downtown Dis-trict installed 65 vehicular wayfinding signs throughout Downtown Hous-ton. 42 artworks were commissioned in collaboration with the Cultural Arts Council Houston and Harris County (CACHH). In contrast to the vehi-cle-oriented wayfinding text on the message panels, the art located on the back panels is specifically direct-ed to pedestrians on the sidewalks.

The 2014-2016 refurbishment of the vehicular wayfinding system includes a new color scheme, stainless steel accents, LED lighting and updated vehicular and pedestrian directional panels. The updates also include the commissioning of 10 new artworks, curated and managed by the Houston Arts Alliance (HAA).

There are four basic signs: 5x11 ver-tical (gateway signs 2-5 with art on both sides of signage), 5x11 vertical (signs 6-14), 10x5 horizontal (signs 15-26 and 28-30) and 15x5 horizontal (signs 27 and 31-52). Sign 1 is new infrastructure on a two-way street with vehicular message panels and artwork on both sides of signage.
