try something different this holidayseason. Spray pumpkins, acorns andbranches. For something truly unique, place journals and pencils at each placesetting for each guest to write down whathe or she is grateful for. Going natural canbe beautiful and economical plus thinkingoutside of the box is fun!

Shopping can be made simplethis holiday season with thehelp of Garfinkle’s Fine Jew-

elry located in Downtown High-land Park, which carries a particu-lar item that owner Jill Garfinklecalls ageless and timeless.

Monogram necklaces offer apersonal touch and can be en-graved with initials or meaning-

ful abbreviations.Garfinkle herself has worn an

initial monogram on her neck forsix years, if not longer, and hassold name necklaces for 40. Themain appeal is their appropriate-ness for every occasion.

“People don’t dress like theyused to,” Garfinkle said. “Ev-erybody’s casual and jewelry hasbecome more casual because ofthat. You don’t see the heavy, hugediamonds. Our grandmothershad all these very big, expensivepieces. That’s not going to hap-pen today because of the cost ofgold and silver but also becauseit’s not in style to do that.”

The most popular monogramselection is the interlocking scriptinitials where the beginning letterof the last name is prominentlycentered between the first andmiddle name letters. Garfinkle’sFine Jewelry offers hundreds ofstyles and sizes, including barnecklaces and block print. The

Heather Moore line of initial jew-elry is a customer favorite. A smalldisc encircled by diamonds andengraved with three initials startsat $135.The price can rise into thethousands depending on the ma-terial requested.

“This is a totally afford-able item. That’s another rea-son that the girls like it, becauseit’s something they can have. Alot of things they might like tohave, but they’re out of reach,”Garfinkle said.

Recently, a grandmother cameinto the shop and bought a mono-gram necklace for her granddaugh-ter’s bat mitzvah. Another womanmade a monogram out of a specialsaying that her daughter said.

“It’s nice things like that thathappen in all jewelry,” says Gar-finkle, adding that men’s initialpieces are also available. Cufflinks, tie bars, and a new-age typeof money clip called a grand bandcomes in a sterling or gold plate.

Monogrammed orders arecompleted in approximately twoor three weeks and will take lon-ger closer to the holidays — “it’snot just me ordering it; it’s therest of the country.”

“It’s an old thing come back,”Garfinkle said of monogramjewelry. “No trends last foreverbecause styles change, but this issomething that could be forever.”

The staff at the store has gone all outthis season to offer warm, stylish coats forall ages, starting at $50.

“We really pay attention to thetrends, but also like to stay true towhat we have seen as great sellers over

the years,” Pedowitz said.Though past favorite colors

Holidays can be a timeto come together, re-lax and eat your heart

out. Unfortunately, it’s yourheart that you need to keep aneye on. Cardiovascular diseaseis the No. 1 cause of death formen and women in the UnitedStates, and heart attacks areprevalent over the holidays.Navigate the season with thesetips in mind.Exercise often

“Heart disease occurs year-round, and the best therapyis to be physically fit andhealthy and as close to idealbody weight as you can,”said Ian Cohen, MD, medi-cal director of cardiology forNorthwestern Medicine LakeForest Hospital.

Just 45 minutes of moder-ate cardiovascular exercisefour or five times per weekhas major beneficial impacts,so stay in an exercise routineover the holidays or while onvacation. Bring your work-out indoors to keep fromexposing yourself to extremeweather temperatures.Eat smart

It’s tempting to ditchthose diets during the holi-days, but it’s important tostay disciplined when facedwith more food, alcohol andstress. Portion control is a

must. Watch alcohol andsalt intake, especially if youhave hypertension. If you’rediabetic, curb your desirefor sugary foods. Read foodlabels to find low-salt andlow-cholesterol options.

“I can’t stress enough theimportance of fruits and veg-etables as a big part of yourdiet,” Dr. Cohen said. “Aprotein-based diet with fewercarbs and less fat is good forthe heart.”Stress less

While it may warm yourheart to spend time withloved ones, it can also be acatalyst for anxiety. “Embracethe positive aspects of theholidays, but understand yourown triggers,” Dr. Cohen said.

Determine stressful situa-tions and weigh your prioritiesto figure out which environ-ments to avoid, or find a wayto make them more positive.

Be heart healthythis holiday season

What is your risk?Even if you’ve never felt symptoms such as chest pressure, shortness of breath, an irregular heartbeat, swelling or fluidretention, you may be at high risk for cardiovascular disease.Find out your risk level using Northwestern Medicine’s simpleonline Health Assessment Tool at www.healthcheck.nm.org.
