There are several positions which require walk- ing (shadows) and others were no walking is required. The equipment required is a 2M HT, spare batteries, ear piece] or headset, and possibly you may want to bring a hat, chair and water bottle. The operational frequency will be the club simplex, with talking on the DARC repeater. Please sign up at the July meeting or contact Buck Kerns, AE6DT or Rick Norwood, KD6KHJ. See you there. Tales From Field Day

Kent Savage, K6WCI, will be

presenting information on the

Club’s Field Day Activities.

Presidents Message, July 2015

I am generally encouraged by the recent growth of our club. While we are small in size we have a very active

membership. With June be-ing Field Day month, much of

our efforts are focused on mak-ing another successful effort setting up at Apollo Park. Our very ambitious plans are to run 6 or 7 alpha which will crowd us in pretty good in that little parking lot on Smallwood Ave. We plan to have stations run-ning CW, digital modes (PSK, RTTY) and phone. We will be using beam and wire antennas to cover the bands from 80 meters to UHF, and maybe even a dish or two for the microwave bands.

There were six who tested on June 20th. One earned their Technician class li-cense and four upgraded to Gen-eral. One of the people who up-graded to General is legally blind. Mary Carlson, KC6BBJ, read the questions to him and then recorded the answers given. This was a first for the DARC VE Team.

The next session is August 15th.

President’s Message continued from page 1

I got on the air about 6:30 PM with the intent of working all the bands I and 432 relatively quiet which is often an indicator of a 6 meter opening. Sure enough, 6 was open, I made about 30 contacts in 16 different grids during the end of the contest. I worked Iowa, Missouri, Texas and Colorado to name a few. It literally made my weekend. I hope to see you all at Field Day, stop on by and visit if you don’t feel like knocking out some Q’s.

Next T-Hunt August 29th

With the success of the first T-hunt in several years, sponsored by the Downey club, we are planning on many more in the fu-ture. The next t-hunt will be held August 29th at 0900 hours. Once again the starting point will be the top of the multi story parking structure behind the Krikorian theatre in Downtown Downey. James Nielsen, KJ6WZW, will be the one hiding the transmitter and we will be using the standard T-hunt frequency of 146.565. The boundaries will be expanded slightly this time to include the area from Telegraph road to Rosecrans and between the 605 and 710 freeways. The first person to successfully locate the transmitter will be the hider next time around. If you have never learned the skill of tracking down a transmitter, these are great beginner hunts. We can pair you up with someone more experienced if you like or just give you some basic tips and send you on your way. See you there, Dave Glenn, N6TEB

Dave asked for a motion to accept the Treasurer’s report as printed in the June edition of the Q5. The motion was made and seconded and passed unanimously. Announcements: Dave reported that the club held a beginner style T-Hunt on Saturday May 16

th. The start point was on top of

the Krikorian theater parking lot and the boundaries for the T-Hunt were the Downey city limits. James Nielsen, KJ6WZW won the hunt and will be the hider on the next T-Hunt, soon to be announced. Buck Kerns, AE6DT, announced that the Hawaiian Days Festival will be on July 18 – 19. A signup sheet is available. Bill Heather, KB6WKT, updated the group about the 2015 HAMCON plans and the Club’s role in the event. While technical difficulties were being worked out with the overhead projector, those in attendance reported individually on what they have been doing in Amateur Radio. Bill Heather, KB6WKT, 2015 Field Day Chairman provided the Club with a power point presentation on Field Day 2015. The presentation included old pictures of Club’s past Field Days. Also Bill reviewed this year’s plans for the event. After the presentation a short question and answer session took place. Following the presentation, the meeting adjourned at 20:43 hours with many of the members staying after en-joying the refreshments and visiting. Respectfully Submitted Bill Heather KB6WKT

Sometime on or about May 20, the next US Naval Academy satellites and Brno University PSK31 transpond-ers head into space from Cape Canaveral on an Atlas 5 launcher and into an approximately 50° orbit. The launch will include the Psat APRS satellite — a pair of identical 1.5 U cubesats (A and B) — as well as the

BRICsat and USS Langley (Unix Space Server Langley) nanosatellites.

“Psat is a Naval Academy student satellite project named in honor of one of our graduates, Bradford Parkin-son, of GPS fame, which contains an APRS transponder for relaying remote telemetry, sensor, and user data from remote users and Amateur Radio environmental experiments or other data sources back to Amateur Ra-dio experimenters via a global network of Internet-linked ground stations,” explained APRS developer Bob Bruninga, WB4APR. In addition to the data transponder, a secondary Brno University transponder will sup-port multi-user PSK31 text messaging. The APRS downlink will be 145.825 MHz (1200 baud AX.25 APRS).

“We welcome radio amateurs worldwide to tune into the downlinks and either IGate packets into the global APRS-IS system or to e-mail me,” Bruninga said. “After launch, the next several orbits will be over USA and Europe.” Bruninga said PSAT, including the PSK31 transponder, would not be available for use until all on-orbit checks are complete, a process he said could take “many, many days.” He also requested reports on any PSK31 (FM) heard on 435.350 MHz (the PSK31 uplink is 28.120 MHz).

The PSK31 multi-user FDMA transponder experiment on Psat, BRICsat and USS Langley is similar to the one on RAFT and PCSAT2. It will allow messaging among up to 30 modest ground stations simultaneously, Bruninga said.

Psat is one of five APRS-networked Amateur Radio satellites that will be in orbit during 2015, and all will appear on the live APRS downlink page. The others include PCsat-1, in orbit since 2001, QIKcom-1, set to launch in September,QIKcom-2, set to launch in December, and the ARISS packet radio system on board the International Space Station since 2007.

According to AMSAT-UK, BRICsat will carry an APRS constellation transponder with a downlink of 437.975 MHz and an uplink on 145.825 MHz (1200 and 9600 baud AX25) plus a PSK31 transponder with a 28.120 MHz uplink (2.5 kHz bandwidth) and a UHF FM downlink on 435.350 MHz. Gunter’s Space Pagedescribes USS Langley as “a proof-of-concept mission for providing global internet access via a nanosatellite constella-tion.” The satellite will act as a web server and router in space, using Internet Protocol and Linux. Downlinks 437.475 MHz (9600 baud AX.25 packet telemetry) with uplink at 145.825 MHz. The PSK31 transponder also will uplink at 28.120 MHz and downlink 435.350 MHz. The IARU coordination page said that while 28.120 MHz is not in the band plan as a satellite frequency, “the panel considered the motivation for this frequency as to give lower class license holders in the US the opportunity to participate in the project.”

Bruninga said satellite experiments such as Psat “serve our educational and outreach goals for student pro-

jects encouraging young people to be interested in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.” He said he

hopes other schools will build either additional 145.825 MHz relay satellites or experimental sensors. “We hope

that Psat will be the ‘egg’ in this chicken-egg conundrum,” he added.

Proof Readers Needed for Q5

Hello from the Editor, John Powell, KF6EOJ.

I’m asking for more volunteers to proofread the Q5. This position requires an eye for layout detail as well as spelling, punc-tuation, and grammar correction. I generally send out a preliminary Q5 towards the end of the month and as time is critical,

I try to send it to the proofreaders on a Friday with corrections needed by the following Monday, so this requires that you spend some time, usually on a weekend, to proofread and return corrections to me.

So if you are interested please email me directly via: [email protected]

Thanks & 73

John Powell
