DOWICILTM QK-20 Good environmental profile

In aqueous environments, DOWICIL™ QK-20 decomposes quickly. Ultimately, only carbon dioxide, ammonia and bromide ions remain as end products. The entire process may take place with a half-life of less than one half hour, depending on the system conditions.

Safety

Equipment sanitization

Equipment could be a source of contamination. Biofilms especially, which are an organized community of organisms meshed in a carbohydrate matrix, could be hidden in pipes, pumps and tanks. They act like a continuous source of contamination with microorganisms transferred to end formulations. Biofilms are difficult to remove due to adhesion to surfaces and increased tolerance (up to 100x greater resistance) to preservatives (due to the organized structure with a matrix).

Dosing guidelines for equipment treatment Routine treatment - Recommended when no major microbial problems are

observed (no redundant contamination issue)

0.012% - 0.025% of DOWICIL™ QK-20 (24 – 50 ppm DBNPA) diluted in water with up to 4 hours contact time.

  Shock treatment - Recommended when contamination issues are observed.

0.1% -0.2% of DOWICIL™ QK-20 (200 – 400 ppm DBNPA) diluted in water for one hour contact time.

Process recommendations

Wash with water after treatment with DOWICIL™ QK-20. In the Personal care and Cosmetics industry, a thorough wash is needed to avoid contact or transfer into the finished products.

DOWICIL™ QK-20 is compatible with the following materials, but we recommend to verify compatibility with your specific equipment before use.

*316 stainless steel can be in contact with Dowicil QK-20 for short period of time but should be washed thoroughly after use to prevent general corrosion or pitting.

Decomposition

DOWICIL™QK-20 possesses two characteristics that make it unique among non-oxydising biocides:

- extremely fast antimicrobial action

- rapid degradation to relatively non toxic end products.

The dominant degradation pathway under use conditions involves reaction with nucleophilic substances or organic material invariably found in water.

Additional degradation reactions include pH-dependent hydrolysis, reaction with soil and breakdown via exposure to ultraviolet radiation.

Half-Life

DOWICIL™ QK-20 typically yields a 99.999% microbial kill before it degrades sufficiently to lose effectiveness.

At neutral and normal system operating temperatures, DOWICIL™ QK-20 exhibits a half-life of about 9 hours.

As pH increases, the rate of degradation of DOWICIL™ QK-20 increases, but virtually complete kill is achieved well before significant degradation occurs.

The pH profile for the hydrolysis of DOWICIL™ QK-20 at 10°C, 30°C and 50°C is shown in the figure below.

Storage conditions Analysis shows that 95% of the original concentration of active ingredient in

DOWICIL™ QK-20 is maintained when stored in appropriate containers after 9 months.

The active ingredient (DBNPA) in DOWICIL™ QK-20 is temperature sensitive and will decompose exothermically at elevated temperatures. In addition, its decomposition rate increases with increasing temperature once the exothermic reaction begins. Do not store under conditions where heat cannot be dissipated.

We recommend to store DOWICIL™ QK-20 in a dark, cool, dry well ventilated area below 30°C (86°F) in the closed original container.

A fast acting and broad spectrum biocide for treating raw materials, processing water and contaminated products

DOWICIL™ QK-20 is a fast acting, broad spectrum biocide that is ideal for reducing microbiological contamination in raw materials or products such as detergents and polishes.

Many manufacturers, who use biocides for in can preservation of finished products, use the same biocide to treat stored raw materials, wash water, recycle water and contaminated finished products. Although long term preservatives may eventually get the job done, they may take too long to work – resulting in costly production delays. In addition, the cost of long term preservatives can be quite high.

Dow offers a targeted, customized biocide that is faster acting and less expensive in these applications. DOWICIL™ QK-20 quickly and economically cleans up these potential sources of contamination without requiring you to shut down or delay production.

Please note that DOWICIL™ QK-20 is not INCI listed and not authorized for incorporation into personal care and cosmetics products. No contact allowed with final product or raw materials (including water coming into contact with final product) in the personal care and cosmetics industry. Rapid decontamination in household industry

As an effective microbial decontaminant to clean up contaminated raw materials and recycled wash water

Dosing guidelines for rapid decontamination

Treatment of process / recycled water- Between 0.012% to 0.1% of DOWICIL™ QK-20 depending on the water quality- Ex: 500 ppm product (100 ppm active)

  Recovery of contaminated raw materials / Finished products- Between 0.012% to 0.1% of DOWICIL™ QK-20 - Ex: 1000 ppm product (200 ppm active)

In both cases, allow at least 30 minutes of contact time with good mixing: the fast action minimizes production down-time.

Preservative enhancer in household industry As a preservative enhancer for finished products

DOWICIL™ QK-20 can be used to reduce the bio burden / pre-existing contamination before addition of long term preservatives

- avoid stress on the long term preservation system.

- minimize the likelihood of organism tolerance.

This can lower the chances for field failure, product recall, product rework and downtime. In some cases, overall preservative costs may also be reduced.

Dosing guidelines for preservative enhancement Initial bio-burden reduction - Between 0.012% - 0.025% DOWICIL™ QK-20 (25-50 ppm)- Add just minutes before the addition of the in-can preservative system

Process recommendations DOWICIL™ QK-20 is completely miscible with water and easily dispersed upon

introduction into your system. DOWICIL™ QK-20 could be added at any phase of production provided that thorough mixing is achieved.

If the manufacturing process involves heating of the product, it is advisable to add DOWICIL™ QK-20 after cooling down at the end of the process.

If DOWICIL™ QK-20 should be added at a pH > 9.5, then we recommend to check efficacy (as DBNPA could be decomposed at this high pH before killing microorganisms) or to add DOWICIL™ QK-20 at a lower pH.

Excellent compatibility with formulation components and other preservatives DOWICIL™ QK-20 is compatible with formulation components and preservatives.

Excellent formulation compatibility means that you can solve or prevent contamination problems without shutting down or delaying production and without undesirable effects on your finished product. DOWICIL™ QK-20 is also formaldehyde free.

Please note that the active ingredient in DOWICIL™ QK-20 will react with and may be inactivated by strong reducing and/or nucleophilic reagents.

Compatibiliy study should be conducted on your specific application.
