Plans to transform EastKent College’s campus

at Dover have beenunveiled during a visit tothe district by MatthewHancock, Minister forSkills and Enterprise,

accompanied by CharlieElphicke, MP for the

town. The vision for the campus includes creatingspecialist vocational space for studentsstudying engineering, logistics andhospitality – industries that are consideredvital to the local economy. The Minister also took the opportunity tomeet a small number of local businesses, including Dover Harbour Board, LondonFancy Box, Meggar and Morgan Jones, andthe Channel Chamber of Commerce.During the meeting the Minister got thebusinesses’ feedback on the redevelopmentplans and heard firsthand about skills issuesfacing the district and East Kent.Minister for Skills and Enterprise MatthewHancock said: “East Kent College is drivingefforts to build a bridge between educationand the world of work in Dover. I amdelighted to have had the opportunity tosee first-hand the college’s strong bid forimproved facilities and to have met localemployers keen to engage with the collegeand its students.“Supported by the tireless efforts of localMP Charlie Elphicke, youth unemploymenthas fallen in Dover by 30 per cent over thelast year. There is still more to do toensure that every young person can realisetheir potential but, as I have seen today, things are moving in the right direction.”East Kent College formally takes overresponsibility for the day-to-day running ofthe Dover campus on August 1, followingthe demerger of the Dover and Folkestonecampuses from K College. The campuscurrently has 240 students but East KentCollege plans to double that number tocater for 500 learners and apprentices inthe future.Charlie Elphicke MP commented”It was areal battle to secure the future of the DoverCampus, yet we succeeded. Now we need

to make it a more modern campus that learners will be proudof. I will be taking these exciting plans to the Local EnterprisePartnership for funding. Dover is seeing a lot of investment - andinvesting in our future with a modern campus is a key part ofthat.”Graham Razey, Principal of East Kent College, added: “It wasgreat to share our exciting vision for the Dover campus with theMinister, local MP and business community, and explain whatthey mean for the local economy.“We want to create a campus that Dover can be proud of, andwhere its young people want to train and develop their careers.Since the transfer of K College’s Dover and Folkestone campuseswas agreed in February, our team has been focused on ensuringthat the courses on offer match the needs of students andbusinesses.”East Kent College recentlyannounced that it is establishinga new centre at Discovery Park, which will see the sciencecurriculum being taught at theSandwich site, and will also behome to its 70 strong corporateservices team. The designs for the new developments at the Dover campuswere created by leading further education designers, Tonbridge-based Richard Hopkinson Architects.Plans to transform East Kent College’s campus at Dover havebeen unveiled during a visit to the district by Matthew Hancock,Minister for Skills and Enterprise, accompanied by CharlieElphicke, MP for the town.

Science Jamboree atRiver Primary

School!!!Year 6 classes have enjoyed theopportunity to participate in the EastKent Science Jamboree this weekwhich has really challenged them toapply their science understanding toreal life contexts. It was a real ‘handson’ experience which they are likelyto remember for some time. Theywere commended on both theirbehaviour and enthusiasm andwillingness to rise to each challenge.Well done Year 6.

Science Week at Sandwich Junior School:We had an incredible week of scientific discovery and learning. Allyear groups excelled themselves in not only delivering the sciencecurriculum in a creative way, they all undertook enrichment projects.I am convinced we have some budding dentists in Y3 and futureengineers in Y4 following their kite building.Y5 brought smiles to the staff’s faces with their food art - wecompeted to identify the children from their food art self-portraits.Y6 designed, made and tested their flying machines – inspired by thework of Leonardo da Vinci. The whole school enjoyed watching MrDyson launch their ‘flying machines’ from the roof of the school. Thehighlight of the week was the investigation day with our Pfizer andSTEM volunteers. To say the pupils enjoyed the experiments andextended their understanding of scientific concepts would be anunderstatement!
