June 2020 Volume 62 Issue 2 June 2020 Newsletter From the Driver’s seat (No seat cushion) How many times have you heard this, “What a weird time”. Seems like we’ve haven’t had a club meeting in years. The last time we met was in February. I and the board have been making our decisions based on the information presented by the health department and government officials. The club was scheduled to have our Spring Picnic at Deerfield Golf Club the end of April. With the events happening in the world I contacted Deerfield in early March to discuss our options for the Spring Picnic. At the time no one knew where things were gong and I don’t think at this time any of us know the exact course for the future. Deerfield was gracious to offer different options. As you know the RCC Board decided to cancel the Spring Picnic for 2020 and move it to April 25 th , 2021. Trying to head off future issues with scheduling because of COVID-19 and not waiting until the last minute I contacted Shadow Lake Golf Club in early April to discuss options for the RCC Summer Picnic. The Summer Picnic was schedule for July 19 th . So not to cancel this event at this time we discussed options for the RCC Summer Picnic. The RCC Summer Picnic has been reschedule for August 23 rd . At this time, I’m hoping that we can still hold this event but only time and recommendations from the health department and government officials will tell. I know that Sheila and I would like to say we’ve been driving our Vettes on a number of events with the club but that hasn’t happened. Like many of you we’ve had the Vettes out only a couple of times to just get away from the house even if only for a short drive. I know that some members put together cruises for Memorial Day while observing the new everyday term “Social Distancing”. There was also a parade of Corvettes to help a young man celebrate his 9 th birthday. Currently I’m planning on have a June 29 th meeting. Usually we have the meeting at a restaurant, but plans have changed like many things around us. As of this writing the plan is to have the meeting outside at the church, WEATHER PERMITTING and bring a chair. Barton Hots will be there early for you to purchase food. Trying to do something close to what we’ve done in past years. Watch your email for the status of this meeting. What’s the future hold? My crystal ball is really really foggy and not giving up any answers. The only thing I can say is I hope all are staying healthy and safe until we get to meet again. Doug Rigerman 2020 RCC President

A young man’s birthday surprise. Club members Patty and Pasquale LoMascolo reached out to the membership to help make a young man’s birthday special. Ryan Moroni was turning 9, loves parades, especially the part where he got to see his favorite car the CORVETTE. He is disappointed that many if not all the parades in the area have been cancelled because of current world events. Patty and Ryan’s mom Kelly came up with a way to give Ryan a birthday surprise he wouldn’t forget. This would also be a great way for club members to do something special, give back to the community, practice “Social Distancing” and allow them to drive their Corvettes. The plan was to have a private parade of Corvettes along with family members driving their personal vehicles. The date and time was set. Now all that was needed was good weather and some Corvettes. May 26th arrived with great weather, 17 Corvettes and many family members. The group lined up in the parking lot of St. Cecilia’s Church on Culver Rd. awaiting go time. At 630pm the caravan of vehicles headed a couple blocks down the street to Ryan’s home. Ryan got the best surprise for his birthday, a private parade of Corvettes. Happy birthday Ryan.

Corvette jokes:

A man was very fond of his new Corvette. So, he invited a Rabbi, a Priest,

and a Pastor to come and bless it. The Priest sprinkled the car with holy water and

chanted in Latin, the Pastor invoked the name of god and led everyone into silent

prayer, and the Rabbi sang a hymn and cut of the tip of the car’s tailpipe.

What do you call a Corvette following a Camaro at high speeds?

Chevy Chase.

R.I.P. Roy Gallo – we will all miss you.

Thanks Carmela for organizing a RCC send off with Roy’s family to Riverside Cemetery on March 26th. George, Nadine, Tim and Mary Ann Glasow joined Carmela and Siggi to say goodbye to our old friend, a former club member. Roy had a 1979 Pace car and had won the Gene LeDoux award in 1999.

A Veterans Day Ceremony at Riverside Cemetery Veterans Memorial The Rochester Corvette Club did it a little different this year due to the Covid 19

Pandemic, but it was still very effective and poignant. Normally, we have hosted our veterans, in and outside the club, at Frontier Field on Memorial Day but due to the

fact that George Werner wouldn't let the tradition die, he coordinated the honoring of

the veterans at the Veterans Memorial at Riverside Cemetery. There were over 20 cars and several members present. George did a great job putting together an agenda

for the ceremony. Don Andrews and Gene Cameron were also honored for their service and their dedication to RCC. We were able to listen to our National Anthem but

some of the other songs were not heard due to technical difficulties. The ceremony

was shorter than normal but very meaningful. The day was cool but very sunny which warmed our hearts. After the ceremony some

of us caravan-ed to Tom Wahls in Avon for lunch. Thanks again to George for a very meaningful and needed day together. George also thanked Ed Steier and Bob

Hoffarth for their assistance for all their help with this event.

The dark side of the early Corvette... I sent a note to our esteemed and knowledgeable car

buddy Ken Yanez in Michigan. His company has

been building concept cars for GM, Ford and

Chrysler for many year and knows the industry as

well as anyone.. his reply below.

So, I venture to say it wasn't just the Corvette that

had a dark side.

Re photos: those mahogany bucks would be

something special to own today... works of art.

Hi Dr Bob, yes this is true. In the 40s and early 50s

they used plaster and wood to build models for

tooling. Of course plaster was dusty like wood, both

bad for you. That’s why they started to use clay

because there was no dust and it was easily

changeable. It was special clay from Red Bank NJ.

The problem with clay was the sulfer that gases out

when it was being heated up to apply on a model. It

took years to find a way to remove the sulfur and

still be usable. Whole sides would just fall off a clay

model because the layers wouldn’t stick to each

other without the sulfur. Some way they found a

formula that works and is safe

Just learned that the bucks used to create molds for

the body of the first gen Corvette were made of

mahogany. This practice led to the discovery of

mahogany dust as a cause of nasal cancer. GM kept

employment records that demonstrated that as little

as 18 months work shaping mahogany could result in

cancer 45 years later.

On Memorial Day Steve Finn organized a cruise in to the Charcoal Corral in Perry. Seventeen cars cruised along on that beautiful day. We all self distanced, phoned in our order and wore out masks while picking up our food. Thank you Steve for a great outing. It was so good to see everyone.

Members Corner (looking for more members to do this)

By Nadine Jopson

Gary and I bought our first Vette in September of 1997. When we went to the car show at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center in March of 1998 we came across RCC’s table and talked to the then president, Bob Myers. We were impressed with the Club and went to the March meeting. We decided to join. There were under 100 members at the time. We found out that our car was originally owned by Charlie Koch who was a member. The following year I became Secretary to the Club. This was a great job and I got to know many of the members. I continued as Secretary for 8 presidents. Gary and I bought our current Vette, Misty, a 1991, in 1982 from Turner Automotive. We found out it was also originally owned by former RCC members who had moved to NC, Dave and Mary Seccombe. Gary passed away in August of 2010. Dave Kuchman detailed the car for me and put it in the Bob Johnson car show. I once again became secretary with the passing of then secretary, our beloved Judy Capurso, in 2011 and served through 2018, George and I married in 2014 and he takes fabulous care of Misty. We have a fabulous Club and I sincerely hope people will step up to the run for offices.
