Welcome to Dorking FC and The New Defence, our home ground for the

2015/16 season.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mark Sale and his team at Horley Town FC for their hospitality and I hope that you enjoy your visit with us today.

This is our second and final season here at The New Defence, ahead of our exciting move back to our old home in Meadowbank, which will be transformed into our iconic new

home. As we continue our development at Dorking FC the new leadership team are very excited about this, their second season. Our vision remains focused on continuing to

rebuild Dorking FC as a respected football club but also as a social enterprise by re-establishing Dorking FC as an iconic club at the heart of its rural community.

The football management team have worked tirelessly over the summer and I would like to thank them for all their efforts. A big welcome back to our squad of players plus a number of exciting new players joining us. We have some bright young talent coming through our

club and once again I expect we will see a good number of our U18’s appearing for our first team.

A huge thanks go to my fellow Board members, all of our volunteer helpers, our football management team and of course our loyal supporters. We hope you will follow us on our journey, grassroots football is important to us all, and Dorking FC hopes to make its own

contribution to the benefit of everyone.

To keep up to date with developments and news at DFC join us on Twitter @dorkingfc and on facebook.com/dorkingfc.

Kind Regards, Grant Ashley, Chairman

MATCH REPORT:DORKING FC 3 - 1 ASH UNITED FC

31/10/15

Dorking continued their rise up the Combined Counties Division One table with a determined win over Ash United at their temporary home ground of The New Defence in Horley.

Manager Glynn Stephens was looking for a positive reaction after the Chicks’ unbeaten league run came to an end a week earlier, conceding a last minute goal in a game where they had created endless chances. Stephens wasn’t disappointed, as Dorking rode out a rough, scrappy first half with a gritty if not always attractive performance, before turning on the style in the second half to beat a resilient Ash side convincingly.

Glen Wright deservedly took the plaudits - and the match ball - as he turned now-traditional committed and creative performance into goals, netting a fine hat trick. The first goal came as early as the fifth minute as Wright scored from Dorking’s first meaningful attack, but Ash were unbowed by conceding so early and the Chicks were unable to take control as the visitors matched them, with half chances at either end.

Dorking started the second half as a more potent attacking force, with Jimmy Brazil delivering good crosses from the right and a glorious defence-splitting through ball by Sanchez Harris was met by captain Martin Smith, but his shot was dragged just wide of the far post.

There was still a sense that the Chicks had not yet matched their finest form, and The slender nature of the lead was exposed when Ash equalised just past the hour, a 30 yard strike crashing against the post and rebounding to Joe Pantony for a tap in.

But the goal just stirred Dorking into action. Immediately, a Glen Wright strike went just wide of the Ash goalpost, and it was Wright who restored the Chicks’ lead just a few minutes later, running in to meet Dan Huxley’s corner and powering a header into the back of the net.

Three minutes later and Dorking made the game safe. Defender Varron John hit a fierce strike which the Ash keeper could only parry into the path of Wright, who gratefully gobbled up the chance to complete his hat trick.

In front of sizeable crowd of all ages, the Chicks began to pass the ball with flair and almost increased the lead when a low strike from Brazil was just tipped around the post.

With three points secured, Glen Wright was presented with the match ball by Steve Barton, CEO of club partners, Coco 5, Dorking-based distributors of the all natural coconut water sports drink.

A strong second half performance was not quite enough for Dorking to get anything out of a difficult away match at second placed Worcester Park, but yet again the Chicks showed how competitive they have now become.

A visit to a team that have only lost twice in the league was always going to have its challenges for Dorking, but the difficulties started before a ball had been kicked, as players from both sides and the referee all got caught in traffic. Meanwhile, the assistant referees in attendance were concerned about water lying on one small area of the pitch.

With a need to get the game under way by 2pm due to the absence of floodlights at the ground, both teams agreed to a member of the Worcester Park coaching staff running the line, so that one of the assistants could stand in for the delayed referee and take charge of the game.

Having lost the toss, Dorking found it hard to control the ball as they kicked down the infamous Skinners Field slope, with passes being over hit and the ball skidding off a greasy surface. However Worcester Park, more familiar with the conditions, settled quickly and the warning signs of a goal were there as they were caught offside three times in quick succession. They finally broke the deadlock through Chris Burke on 21 minutes and doubled the lead five minutes later courtesy of Gary Knowlden, as the Chicks saw out a scrappy first half performance.

Within minutes of the restart, a heavy knock to right back Michael Fowler forced Dorking into a change, bringing on the ever-versatile Jimmy Brazil. Now playing up the slope, the Chicks began to find their shape and shorten their passes to build play in the final third of the pitch.

Although the conditions meant that much of the football played by both teams continued to be untidy, Dorking were back in the game mid-way through the second half when a long diagonal ball from Brazil found centre back Russell Hartt out on the left wing. Hartt was able to cut the ball back to the advancing Glen Wright who, with his current form in front of goal, was never likely to miss.

As both teams tired on a heavy pitch, Dorking looked the more likely to score again and draw level, winning a number of corners and dominating possession. But even when Theo Campbell and Daniel Bransbury came off the bench to make their Chicks’ debut the equaliser refused to materialise and Worcester Park held on to go top of the league.

Despite the defeat, Dorking remain in ninth place with better recent form than many of the clubs above them.

A depleted Dorking team fell to defeat at Eversley & California FC, but can take encouragement from having the best of the first half against the promotion favourites.

The failure to score when on top and the absence of a number of key players conspired against the Chicks, who ran out of ideas after half time.

With a number of players missing through injury or unavailability, manager Glynn Stephens looked to the future and took the opportunity to give senior experience to two of the town’s up-and-coming youth team players. Ryan Lunn and Joe Teague, both just 16, are the latest players to emerge from Dorking’s Under 18s as the club commits to developing locally-based young players through to first team football.

Lunn started the game at right midfield and looked lively in attack as Dorking enjoyed early possession, creating chances and restricting the hosts to a handful of long attempts on goal, in the swirling wind and rain.

As the half wore on, there was a sense that Dorking would have to be more clinical in the final third if they were to upset the odds against their free-scoring opponents who have found the net, often multiple times, for twelve consecutive games. The first warning came after 35 minutes, when only a point blank save from the feet of Dorking keeper Andrew Osei kept the scores level, when a goal had appeared inevitable.

The opening goal arrived just a few minutes later when Aaron Voller met a free kick from deep and took the Dorking defence by surprise, diverting the ball into the net at the near post with a volley on the spin.

If the Chicks felt the goal had been a little against the run of play, Eversley went on to show why they have been a match for most teams, finishing the half much the stronger with further chances to extend their lead.

There was an element of misfortune in the way Dorking conceded a second goal on 54 minutes, after some positive play in an open start to the second half. With Osei diving at the feet of an onrushing striker, he appeared to have his hands on the ball before it went under his body and into the path of Matt Griffiths to tap into an empty net. The Dorking players appealed that the ball had been knocked out of their keeper’s hands by the collision with the Eversley player, but the referee was un-persuaded.

The second goal effectively ended the Dorking resistance. Two good combinations between Martin Smith and Theo Campbell were as close as the Chicks came to getting back into the game – the first a flick on by Smith that set Campbell free in the penalty area before poking the ball wide, the second a dangerous low cross from Smith on the right, that Campbell just failed to connect with as he raced unmarked into the six yard box.

If the result was a disappointment, Dorking can take some encouragement from the early days of its local youth policy, and know that returning players will make the team more competitive in the upcoming fixtures – tonight at home to Staines Lammas in the Southern Combination Cup on Tuesday (KO 7:45pm) and away to a revitalised Cobham in the league on Saturday.

THE HISTORY OF DORKING FCFootball has been played in Dorking since the 1830’s. It was first played in the street, and an annual ‘match’ took place every Shrove Tuesday in

Dorking’s High Street. Those on the east of St Martin’s were one team known as the East-enders and those to the West, on the opposing team, were the Westenders. The “pitch” extended all the way from London Bridge Road to the Washway Bridge in Station Road.

The match was preceded by a procession led by a band and men dressed as women collecting donations and carry-ing a cross inscribed with words “kick away both Whig and Tory, wind and water, Dork-ing’s glory”. On the left of the cross was a red, white, and blue ball representing the Union, on the top a gold ball representing the winners, and on the right a red and green ball representing the ‘cockerel colours’ of Dorking. Celebra-tions went on well into the evening when pre‐match collections were first distributed to shopkeepers for window damage and the balance con-sumed in beer at The Sun.

This tradition continued until 1905 when it was outlawed after ten years of suppression, and by which time Association Football had defined formal

rules for the game in 1863 (dic-tating kicking only) when rugby went one way with hands, and “soccer” (abbreviation for Asso-ciation Football) went the other with feet. By now Dorking Foot-ball Club had formed in 1880, establishing itself as the second oldest football club in

Surrey and one of the oldest in the country. The club originally played in green and red striped shirts with white shorts – the three colours representing the famous Dorking cockerel.

The cockerel was also very apparent as the main feature of the club’s badge, and hence the club soon became affec-tionately known as “the Chicks”.

The team first played at a site on West Bank before moving to a pitch off Fairfield Drive and then later to Pixham Lane in the 1920s. The Chicks didn’t move to its current location at Meadowbank until 1953 when their success demanded better facilities and a new ground was built on an old dumpsite.

The new Meadowbank had a capacity of 5000 and a stand that accommodated 700. The ground was opened by the then FA Secretary Sir Stanley Rous and was inaugurated by an exhibition match against Corin-thian Casuals. Dorking’s most successful FA Cup run followed in 1955 when they beat Folkestone 3 – 1 in front of a home crowd of more than 4000 before going out in the next

round to local rivals Epsom. In the 1950s annual spectator club membership stood at more than 1000.

EVERSLEY & CALIFORNIA:CLUB HISTORY

California Youth Football Club was formed in 1975 when a group of parents brought together an Under 8’s team based in the California area of Wokingham, Berkshire and from where the Club takes its name. The Club played in its early days in the Bracknell & District Boys League, and was one of the founder members of the East Berks Youth

League formed in the 1990’s.

Providing football for all age groups, the Club expanded to become one of the largest youth soccer clubs in the area, and in the year 2000 it was the first Berks & Bucks FA

affiliated club in the area to be awarded the FA Charter status, also winning the South of England FA Charter Merit Award in 2002; it is currently an FA Charter Development

Club.

California FC introduced girls’ soccer to the area in 2000 and with over 30 teams began a search for a new headquarters. This culminated with the award of the largest ever grant from the Football Foundation for grass roots soccer in 2006 to enable the

Club, as part of the ESA, to develop 15 acres of reclaimed land and construct superior playing fields and facilities at our current base in Fox Lane, Eversley, North Hampshire

where we commenced playing matches in the 2008/09 season.

The Club operates a structured progression for youth players in the local community from a soccer school for the very young, through the age groups from Under 7’s up to and including Under 18’s, providing soccer coaching and matches for all abilities. The

Club runs an annual tournament taking the amount of teams in the club to 38.

We are also a partnership club with the Championship Division club Reading FC. Eversley & California FC teams currently play in the East Berks Youth and North East

Hants Youth Leagues and the Club is actively and progressively introducing the new FA Development Guidelines for grass roots soccer.

California FC established strong links with local senior club Eversley FC and when the senior club, originally formed in 1910, returned to play in Eversley in 2008, the clubs

merged in 2012 to form Eversley & California Football Club.
