With the exciting revitalization of downtown near completion,
NOW is the time for Kent City Council to …
City Council now needs to RE-FOCUS, RE-PRIORITIZE and RE-BALANCE city projects for future sustainability.
The robust and amazing revitalization of downtown Kent has brought together the city of Kent, Kent State University, PARTA and private business partners working with a common agenda. Using attractive architectural planning they have transformed downtown Kent into a hub of commercial activity reminiscent of a century ago. The final phase is in process and now it is time for council to re-focus, re-prioritize and re-balance other needed city projects and services. To coin a statement on page 10 of the 2004 Bicentennial Plan approved by council Nov 3, 2004 – “The search for a balance with economic, social and environmental aspects of our community will be neither easy nor simple. The challenge is in finding balance, achieving compromises, accepting trade-offs and having the wisdom needed to make and keep Kent a sustainable community”.

“The redevelopment of downtown has been the correct priority of Kent City Council and it will generate much needed tax revenue. With the emerging completion of the final phase, City Council and our administration must now turn their attention to tackling a number of infrastructure improvements that have been deferred for years. One of many of those items that appear on the cities’ capital improvement program as unfunded is the 90 year old Police Station. Kent voters said NO to a permanent income tax hike, which is evidence that Kent residents will not react to crisis financial management. They want better information and options on replacing the structure. Other city infrastructures such as streets, storm sewers and drain systems are in need of repairs, especially those in older residential areas. Council and our city administration working with citizens must find solutions to finance these projects.”
Recommend solutions for financing the construction of a new Police Station
Address neighborhood housing concerns with residents
Fund long overdue repairs to deteriorating streets, storm and drain sewers
Prepare for and address state cuts that may impact city funding of social services
Establish dialog with Kent State University officials over common concerns for public safety
Promote industrial development of the former RB&W and Ametek sites
DANIELSDANIELSDANIELSVOTE FOR DORIA
Encourage economic development of high tech jobs in cooperation with Kent State University
Determine and develop other funding sources for fiscal long range planning that will address the fact that the city can’t continue to fall back on “rainy day” funds established to bridge gaps in shortfalls.
