Fuel choicesFuel conversions provide an opportunity for utilities to access lower cost fuels and lower carbon emissions. We have decades of experience in all types of boiler fuel conversions, on both our own equipment and on boilers manufactured by others.

Biomass

Biomass energy has rapidly become a vital part of the global renewable energy mix and accounts for an ever-growing share of electricity capacity added worldwide. Biomass produces a fraction of the carbon emissions of fossil fuels and, managed properly, can also provide a range of other benefits, including support for local industries and economies.

At Doosan Babcock, we have decades of experience in developing 100% biomass and biomass co-firing combustion systems, with large-scale project references across Europe and North America

We can provide full project execution or standalone project services such as detailed design, risk reviews, constructability reviews or physical fabrication and construction. Whatever your needs, you can rely on us to support you in safely and methodically delivering your project.

Our biomass expertise encompasses:

• Fuel handling and milling

• Combustion and dedicated burners

• Boiler heating surface optimisation

• A range of applications covering low to high-level co-firing and full conversion

• A range of designs for direct and indirect systems for fuel flexibility

• A range of boiler performance assessments to ensure optimal output and efficiency are achieved

• Modifications to existing milling plant, and introduction of additional milling plant

• Impact assessments of boiler condition and integrity

• Impact on AQCS equipment performance

• Integrated approach with steam turbine retrofit to optimise plant performance.

Our expertise includes

Coal to coal(changing fuel diet)

Coal to gas

Coal to biomass

and biomass co-firing

We supply and install new combustion systems and controls, make all the necessary modifications to boiler pressure parts and tubes, and address impacts in auxiliary systems, according to your fuel choice requirements.

Our conversion of France’s Gardanne coal-fired plant to biomass will reduce CO2 balance by 600,000 tons per year and extend the plant’s life by 20 years.

Our technologies are behind the world’s largest biomass plants.

The conversion of the lignite-fired boiler to 100% biomass at OPG’s Atikokan plant in Ontario will provide power for 15,000 homes a year.

Emissions reductionAn increasingly stringent regulatory regime is putting pressure on plant owners all over the world to deliver ever-cleaner power generation. At Doosan Babcock, we have the experience and the technologies to help you achieve regulatory compliance while simultaneously extracting the optimum lifetime performance from your plant.

Combustion system optimisation

Poor combustion can result in any number of performance issues, from corrosion and reduced throughput to an increase in harmful emissions. At Doosan Babcock, our optimised combustion systems offer you cost savings, improved performance and availability, while at the same time reducing emissions.

Our expertise covers:

• Fuel flexibility and conversions

• Milling and fuel handling and distribution

• Combustion trouble shooting

Primary NOx reduction

Our primary NOx reduction technologies focus on burner optimisation to minimise the formation of NOx during combustion.

• Low NOx burners (LNB’s) / Advanced LNB’s (aLNB’s)

• Over-fire air (OFA) / boosted over-fire air (BOFA)

• Over 45GW of low NOx burners supplied around the world

• Large Combustion Plant Directive (LCPD) Phase 1 compliance technology in UK and Western Europe

Secondary NOx reduction

Our post-combustion, or secondary, NOx reduction technologies provide compliance with the toughest emissions regulations worldwide and include:

• Selective Non-Catalytic Reduction (SNCR)

• Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) – Full SCR – Optimised SCR, a low-cost,

high-value approach to SCR – Hybrid SNCR/SCR

Leading innovation

We are dedicated to continuing research and development to provide customers with modern technologies that keep them at the forefront of clean power generation.

Our state-of-the-art research and development centre in Renfrew, Scotland has been leading innovation for the best part of a century. It was here that breakthrough developments such as the fusion welded steam drum were made.

Case study: Ratcliffe, UK

Customer: E.ON UK

Project type: SCR retrofit

Contract award: 2008

In 2008, E.ON contracted Doosan Babcock to retrofit the four 500MW boiler units at Ratcliffe with selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology to reduce NOx emissions. The contract required the duration of the four tie-in outages to decrease over time.

Achievements: Substantial phases of the project were completed ahead of schedule, with the project due to fully complete in 2014. Investment and integration of emission control equipment will deliver Industrial Emissions Directive (IED) compliance.

• Over 45GW of low NOx burners supplied around the world

• More than 2,700 low NOx burners in service on over 45GW of capacity

• More than a century of combustion experience

• First full SCR retrofit in the UK

• 36GW of SCR experience

Our upgrade servicesDegradation of equipment performance may occur due to wear and tear. We can repair and replace the necessary parts to recover lost performance and, in some cases, even exceed what was achievable when the plant was new.

Ageing plants rarely operate the way they were originally designed and fuels may have changed over the years. Our OEM and non-OEM boiler modeling capabilities can re-optimise heating surfaces for current fuels in terms of flue gas weight, heat transfer properties and fouling propensity.

Plant upgrades to components outside the boiler island can also have an adverse impact on operations. For example, a turbine HP rotor upgrade requires an increased boiler reheat duty to achieve the full effect, which may have other impacts on heat balance. Using our boiler modelling skills, we can re-optimise the boiler plant.

Efficiency upgradesIn today’s economic environment, we understand how important it is for you to achieve the maximum lifetime performance from your plant. However, we also know from experience the detrimental impact that plant ageing can have on performance. Thankfully, our expertise in boiler upgrade and retrofit is here to help.
