BuilDings in scotland that are notnormally accessible to the public are opened
free of charge over weekends during septemberas part of the Doors Open Days scheme.Coordinated nationally by the scottish CivicTrust as part of the wider european HeritageDays initiative, Doors Open Days events aredesigned to stimulate interest in the builtenvironment and cultural heritage of an area.

THis year, five buildings are being opened aspart of the Falkirk area’s contribution to
Doors Open Days 2010. Two were constructedwith their public purpose informing the designbrief, and two were built as the private residencesof rich families and later converted for public use.The final venue was also built as a privateresidence, for hunting dogs belonging to theowners of Callendar House. To support theprogramme, Falkirk Council Archives will openspecially on the Doors Open Days weekend,providing the opportunity to look at familypapers, memoirs, plans and old photographslinked to all five featured venues.

rAnDOlPH Hill, home tostrathcarron Hospice since the
1970s, was built in 1912 by WilliamWallace, the general manager anddirector of Carrongrove Papermill.The building was designed by thearchitect e. simpson of stirling in thelatest style of architecture, and with anod to the Arts and Crafts movement.The Hospice will welcome visitors tothe site with a guided tour of thefacilities, and an explanation of thework of the organisation; withhospitality in the form of tea andscones available from the refectory.

the time, John Burnett andcompleted in 1900, was the privateresidence of the sherriff family.During the second World War thehouse was used as the offices of thePrudential insurance Company,evacuated from london. in 1946 itwas purchased by the Boys’ Brigade,and now houses their scottishHeadquarters and serves as atraining, conference and activitycentre.

THe Dobbie Hall, erected tocommemorate the end of the war
in south Africa, was designed by A.& W. Black Architects of Falkirk.Funded by Major Dobbie, theconcert and dance hall, alongside thelarbert Carnegie library, lay at theheart of the larbert andstenhousemuir communities. Manyoriginal features remain intact today,including fine tiled floors, the lavishproscenium arch and heavily cofferedceiling in the main hall, and originalplasterwork in the upper lesser hall.

BuilT alongside the Dobbie Hallin 1904 and to a design by the
same architects, A. & W. Black thatcomplemented the concert hall’s richexterior façade, the building that isnow known as the rotary Hall wasin fact larbert’s public library. Thebuilding still has many of the originalfeatures, with a mosaic floor in theentrance hall and panelled readingroom lit by an italianate window.

BuilT around 1840, the CallendarHouse Kennels building is
situated in Callendar Wood, somedistance from the big house so thatthe noise from barking dogs was not anuisance. Callendar Wood is nowowned by the Forestry Commissionscotland and a series of events arescheduled for the Doors Open Daysweekend, including guided walks.

THe panelled library in CallendarHouse, designed by David
Hamilton, is now home to the CouncilArchives. To support the DoorsOpen Days programme, the Archiveswill display material linked to each ofthe five participating venues,including posters and advertisementsfor Dobbie Hall concerts, the originalplans for randolph Hill, old blackand white images of CarronvaleHouse and the memoirs of one of thesherriff family members.

Participate in a costumed re-enactment which takes place in theAntonine Wall gallery, then outsideon the World Heritage site itself.
