Additional Details
Edmund came from the middle lower class of the society. His father was a taxi driver and his mother was a cleaner. However, this wasn’t an excuse for him to stay low. He had been trying his way out of the poverty cycle since young. He started his working life when he was only ten years old. His first job was a labor in a printing factory, earning a mere RM 5 per day wages. He started his own career after secondary school, at the age of 19, it was a greeting card business. However, the first venture flopped. He was loaded with debt, yet he faced the challenges and took the responsibilities to settle the debts. He got the support from the creditors. From the greeting card venture, he went into magazine publication business. After 5 years in business, a miscommunication broke out among the shareholders. He faced the hardest hit of his life. He was kicked out from the company he formed. His wife left him, took along with her their only daughter who was merely 1 years old back then. That was double hit, a breakdown that most people would find it hard to handle. Indeed, he even thought of suicide at some point of time, yet the love for his daughter saved him from that bad choice. While it may seems like the end of the world by losing both the career and the family at the same time, he was able to stand up again within 1 year with the support from family and friends. He published his second book “The Death Road”, jolting down his failed life journey and how he managed to get out from all the troubles. He hoped to share his experience with other people, encouraging those looking for a way out that there is always hope in life. From there, he repicked up his publishing business, instead of magazines, he produces books. And through an incident at a local bank, where he met an old lady who happened to have to stand on her own feet even at a very old age with a few children, he decided to do something bigger. Something that add values to people’s life. Awards and Honors

Authorities Quotes Edmund’s vision is exceptional and his integrity to walk his talk amazed me. By building his network of charity activities and social services from planning to execution, his community leadership showcased his adaptability to serve the orphanage homes, old folks homes, handicapped homes and various community centers. He never lose focus to ensure that he led by example in his personal involvement with these homes by providing recognition to stakeholders like myself and photo evidence of what sponsors have provided or donated to these homes on behalf of Panda Group. ~ Aw Wen Hoe (Alwin) Chairman Malaysian Buddhist Cooperative Society (MBCS) (Bil. Particulars
This is an inspiring real life story of the youngest publisher in Malaysia born in a poor family, made his own way through to riches, being kicked out from his own company, and made a comeback via social enterprise. While losing both the career and family at the same time might be a big knockout to most people, it didn’t work that way for Edmund Lee. From there, he started his writer and social worker’s career. He decided to write a book about problems faced by the elderly. He wanted to have 100,000 books distributed to the market, planting the good seed of filial piety among the readers and the community. From there, a social enterprise* was born. A team was formed throughout the journey. Declining Years is a social enterprise project. There are 2 major activities ongoing, with the aim to raise awareness of the public about the problems faced by the elderly. Through the visits to schools and related charity bodies, we are able to spread the caring spirit upon those involved. We would be inspiring life through life, as we walk the talk. 1) Book Donation to Schools (Target: 100 schools) To date, 20 schools across the country had been visited, with a total of 3,593 books being given free to students, thanks to the supporters and contributors of this social campaign.

2) Social Services at Old Folks’ Home (Target: 100 old folk homes) To date, 23 old folks home had been visited, with services carried out through the help of hundreds of volunteers. Web log: http://decliningyears.com/oneporridgeonelove/ (kindly refer attachment for more info)
The progress and achievements of Declining Years project proof that social model works. Therefor, project “Starry Starry Stars” was born another social project aims to raise awareness about problems faced by children (specifically orphans). The movement also led to the creation of project “101 Charity”, where 101 stands for “one for all and all for one”. All in all, these projects (spanning from Declining Years to Starry Starry Stars to 101 Charity) are all started with a simple and sincere aim, which is to help the needy and the weaker component of the society. With more and more aspiring progress and achievements being made, we can grow from serving not only the community in Malaysia but towards other countries in the region (South East Asia as a whole), or even the world as well. * Social enterprise is an organization that applies commercial strategies to maximize improvements in human and environmental wellbeing—this may include maximizing social impact alongside profits for external shareholders.
