The Donor’s Report  July 1, 2008 - December 31, 2009

8/14/2019 Donor Report 08-09

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/donor-report-08-09 2/12

This donor’s report is a transitional version o the seminary’s

annual report. It is dierent in three very distinct ways.

The frst way is that this is an 18-month report instead o the

usual 12 months. This is the result o an intentional desire to create

a more donor-riendly report in the uture by changing rom a fscal

year report to a calendar year report. Next year, plans are in place

to have a January-December 2010 report. Please bear with us as we

make the transition in our reporting to you and also keep in mind

that this report is or July 1, 2008 - December 31, 2009.

The second transition is that or the frst time, the report is

primarily an electronic publication available at www.ltss.edu. In

an eort to help save the earth’s resources, and the gits you have

entrusted to the seminary, the report is not being mass produced and

mailed. A limited amount o printed copies are available by calling

803-461-3296 or sending an email to [email protected].

The third is the separation o the report to donors and the lists

o donors. This separation enables you to download the documentsmore quickly and makes them more printer-riendly i you choose to

do so. The documents also have a search eature to help you easily

fnd the inormation that is most important to you. You may view

each o these documents at www.ltss.edu/donorreport.

 About the

Donor’s Report

Dear Friends,

Greetings in the name o Jesus, the Christ.

We could not have done it without you.

I am always careul about sentences like that since itis oten easy to overstate the case and overestimate thepresent at the expense o the past. But the sentence is true.Without your help, without your gits, without your wordso encouragement, without your advocacy or the seminary, without your invitation to others to be donors, I simply don’tknow how we would have been able to continue through thepast eighteen months.

During the past eighteen months, we have seen a decline in

synodical support and the yield rom invested unds has nearlydisintegrated. Our students continue to shoulder their portiono the load through tuition payments (oten made with studentloan money), aculty and sta have taken voluntary 10%salary reductions, and we deer maintenance to another time.

Your generous gits, though, have flled enough o the vacuum so that our mission o teaching, orming, and nurturing women and men or public ministry continues. And we are not just limpingalong – this mission continues in strength with proessors who are dedicated to preparing the best leaderor service and a sta that learns every day how to do more with less and work together to support thework o the seminary.

Thank you seems too small a comment to make, but I know no other words. You have made adierence: in the lie o the Seminary, in the lives o students, in the vocation o dedicated teachers o thchurch, and in the well-being o the church.

We trust God’s promises and this year you have been a part o the way in which the promise o 2Corinthians 8.9 has been ulflled or us:

“God is able to provide you with every blessing in abundance, so that by always having enough o everything, you may share abundantly in every good work.”

Thank you or being a part o God’s providence and may we learn rom your example how to shareabundantly with others.

In Christ,

Marcus Miller, PresidentLutheran Theological Southern Seminary

It’s no secret that the 18 months represented in the report

represent one o the worst global economic environments in almost a

century.

However, things are not all bleak or Southern Seminary.

Your gits enabled the seminary to make signifcant gains in key

areas, including overwhelming support o the New Lie Fund, the

seminary’s annual und or operational support. You helped lessen

the blow caused by the major decline in endowment income. Thankyou!

In the areas the seminary can most control, like Gits and Grants,

Operations, Tuition and Fees, you see stability and growth. It’s our

goal to keep this momentum going as we look orward to a more

stable and growing economic climate.

It is also important to note that the rise in tuition income in

2009 was not due to tuition increases (your seminary’s Trustees

acted boldly to reeze tuition and rent levels to lessen the burden

on our uture Christian leaders), but rather an increase in student

enrollment. Thanks be to God!

While it’s not all good news, please take a moment celebrate with

the seminary and the 1,960 other donors in the success that you have

enabled or this special place.

You make the seminary what it is today—a place to teach, orm,

and nurture the uture leaders o Christ’s Church.

From the Chair of the Board of TrustDear Friends o Southern Seminary,

In the 1970s Andrew Gold wrote a popular song entitled,“Thank You or Being a Friend.” His song captures mygratitude or your riendship with Southern Seminary.

The recent global economic crisis has proven to be awake up call to Southern Seminary’s Board o Trustees. Atour October retreat we suraced a number o issues needingattention. To address these issues, we directed “that the Pres-ident and Board Chair orm a uture’s committee to developa new economic model or theological education at LTSS.”This committee’s initial meeting was held on December 2. Afnal report is due to the LTSS Board at its March meeting.

Your continuing riendship will be vital to the implemen-tation o our new economic model, because we cannot counton increased support rom either churchwide or synodicalsources. Neither can we turn to large tuition increases.

How can you help? Here are some possibilities:• Increase your contributions to the New Lie Fund. Thanks to you, in recent years your gits have

grown this und to the $500,000 level. We need to double this response.• Make another riend o LTSS. Invite others to join you on an annual basis in designated support

o Southern Seminary.• I you are an LTSS graduate, encourage another graduate to become a riend through contribu-

tions to the Annual Fund.• Advocate with your congregation to add an LTSS line item in your congregation’s annual budget.

Help your congregation to become a more active riend o LTSS.• Include Southern Seminary in your estate plans.

“All This and Heaven Too” was the name o Andrew Gold’s album that included “Thank You orBeing a Friend.” The album title reminds me o God’s amazing grace that surrounds and empowers usin this lie and ushers us into the lie to come. I thank God or these and all good gits, even as I thankGod or your gits already given and your willingness to raise new riends o Southern Seminary.

Your seminary board is committed to these and other initiatives that will strengthen our seminary in

its mission “to teach, orm, and nurture women and men or public ministry in a context that is Christ-centered, aithully Lutheran, and ecumenically committed.” Thank you or being a riend o SouthernSeminary!

Your Friend,

William B. Trexler, ChairLutheran Theological Southern Seminary Board o Trustees

From the DeanTo All o Our Partners in Mission,

It is a privilege to pause and thank each o you or yourparticipation in this ministry we have at Lutheran Theologi-cal Southern Seminary.

Each o you help us daily as we “teach, orm, and nur-ture women and men or public ministry in a context that isChrist-centered, aithully Lutheran, and ecumenically com-mitted.”

As I gazed out my ofce window a ew weeks ago, Isaw the blue sunlit sky and the campus was airly emptyand quiet. The three J-term courses were nearing their end;some students were literally spread across the globe and thenation as they participated in cross cultural experiences; andaculty were reading and writing in preparation or the starto a new semester.

Now, this campus has come to lie again. The 70 stu-dents who were new in the all semester have returned withthe nearly 100 colleagues who walked with them through their frst classes. An invigorated acultywalks into newly arranged and reshened classrooms to do what they do better than many couldimagine. The sta and administration are once again reminded why we do what we do.

The sky is still blue and sunlit and the winter chill hangs on, but the spring semester is in ull

swing and the campus is once more ull o lie. Seniors just received their regional frst call assign-ments and middlers await internship site announcements.

Your contribution may have paid a portion o tuition or the junior who traveled to a Hon-duran village to assist in a medical clinic and help repair homes. The endowment und providedby your amily may have assisted one o our proessors as she researched the material that is nowpart o a brand new course oering. Your gracious git may have paid the power bill that kept thelights on and the computer running in my ofce. Your git may have helped control the cost o continued lunch service in the reectory.

Some o these things may not seem that glamorous to you, but to those o us who live, work,

play and pray here on campus, these gits are our lieblood.

Your encouragement, gits, and prayers make all o these lie moments possible or all o us.For you and your generosity, we oer out thanks to God.

Sharing in Christ’s service,

Ginger BarfeldDean and Vice President o Academic AairsLutheran Theological Southern Seminary
