2017 Annual Catholic

Appeal

Each Year at this time, we

are encouraged to consider

the needs if our Church

beyond our parish

boundaries- to consider the

needs of our diocese as one

family in Christ. Just as we are one in the Body of

Christ, we must remember that we are one with

other parishes in our diocese. Once a year, we are

asked to make a commitment to support the work of

our diocesan program and ministries that provide

services that no one parish could provide on its own.

This effort is a means by which we can all work

together to share the wonders of God with all those

him.

Who is like You among the gods, O LORD?

Who, is like You, majestic in holiness,

Awesome in praises, working wonders?

Exodus 15:11

Thank you for your support and participation!

WE ARE THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD (5TH SOTY A)

God is light, in His light we see light. He made the sun, the

moon and the stars to provide light during the day and at night

in order to enhance our vision to carry out our daily tasks in

fulfillment of His gracious will. On the other hand God has also

given us the eyes of the mind and heart to as a spiritual vision

of faith to do Him homage. When this spiritual vision of life

became darkened by sin, God gave us His revealed Word and

the commandments to be as a lamp and guide for our steps.

During the exodus of His chosen people; the Israelites out of

the land of Egyptian captivity, at the crossing of the red sea, the

Lord preceded them in the day time by means of a column of

cloud to show them the way, and at night by means of a column

of light to give them light (Exodus 13:21-22). This light

symbolizes Jesus as the light of the world: The true light that

enlightens everyone was coming into the world (John 1:9).

To usher in the light of salvation; Jesus illumined the world

through His preaching and his saving works which are now

constituted into the luminous or mysteries of light by Pope St.

John Paul II. This light of salvation casts out the darkness of

sin and evil in the world on the holy night of Easter when

Christ rose victoriously from the dead. Baptism makes us

sharers in the divine life and bearers of the light of Christ. The

lighted candle from the Easter candle signifies that Christ has

enlightened the neophyte. In him the baptized are “the light of

the world” (CCC1243).

Hence, each of the baptized received a lighted candle from

the priest during baptism with the admonition: you have been

enlightened by Christ, walk always as a child of the light. Keep

the flame of faith alive in your heart. When the Lord comes, go

out to meet him with all the saints in the heavenly kingdom. In

a world that is full of moral decay, violence, corruption and

many other social ills, we as Christians are highly esteemed by

Jesus as the salt of the earth and the light of the world. The

punch question is, what difference have we made in the world

around us? Or to what extent do we positively impact

distinctively on the lives of others? The church as the body of

Christ has made more than a thousand distinctions through out

her over two thousand year history by building a civilization of

love and making the world a better place. She makes the saving

presence of God felt on the altar and in the other sacraments

through out the world on daily basis.

Through her preaching of the Gospel and heroic witness, the

saints have transformed the lives of many, in her ecumenical

dialogue with people of other faith, the church has changed the

hostilities that existed among adherents of other religious

beliefs and practices so as to enhance unity in diversity, the

catholic social teaching of the church has changed the

structures of injustice and ensured the promotion of human

dignity, peace, justice and development in the whole world.

But the continuous evidence of moral decay, corruption,

war, terrorism and other forms of man’s inhumanity to man in

the world has left more to be deserved. Every where in the

world, people are still spreading amoral philosophies like 419,

fraudsters and hackers, easy compromise with sin: if you go to

Rome do as the Romans do, politics especially in the

developing countries of the world is considered as a dirty game

in which one plus one equals to zero, in business, cheating and

dishonesty is heightened, in school, examination malpractice is

the order of the day, inside the church, majority put on a

pretentious attitude and practice the false doctrine of thou shall

not be caught and in a culture of survival of the fittest, there is

general man’s inhumanity to man.

Therefore, each of us must continue to bring the light of Christ

to permeate and change the world around us. We must bring

the truth to bear on falsehood, love to cast out hatred and petty

jealousies, peace to bear on war and misunderstandings, justice

to tear down structures of injustice, be the voice of the

voiceless and let the love God shine in our homes, families,

work place; school, hospital, business and government offices.

Teach us, O Lord, to Share the Joy of the Gospel,

understanding always, that generosity is shown in acts of friendship, respect, and encouragement. And that in every act of human kindness toward our brothers and sisters

in need, we can work wonders in the lives of others.

Guide us to be generous in our thought and actions and give us the grace to realize that in each measure

we give, we also receive. Amen.
