Our Story Starts With Your Donation...Like a T-shirtTo you, it’s just a T-shirt. One that you no longer wear, or maybe no longer fits. But to us it is much more than just a donation. It’s the beginning of a cycle that results in better lives for individuals and families in the communities we serve.

When Is A T-shirt More Than Just A T-shirt?When you donate it to Goodwill.

You donate a T-shirt to Goodwill

Goodwill sells the T-shirt in one of its stores

The sale of the T-shirt helps fund our mission

People with barriers find meaningful employment

Here’s How It WorksThe sale of your donated T-shirt (or sweater, or coffee pot, or basketball) helps fund these services in the communities we serve:

Independent Living

Life SkillsIt’s never too early to learn about the power of work. Through our youth programing, we strive to provide young people with the opportunity to earn money and gain meaningful work experience; learn and develop the skills, attitudes, and commitment necessary to succeed in today’s world of work; gain exposure to various career industries and interact with dynamic working professionals in a positive work environment.

Marion Goodwill fosters independence through housing, clothing and transportation. When you don’t have a place to call home, suitable work clothes, or a car to drive, gaining the confidence and self-sufficiency you need to obtain a job can seem impossible. Through Goodwill’s Housing, Emergency Clothing, and Wheels-to-Work Programs, individuals are able to find help in three key areas that can lead to success on the job front.

Stores & Donations

Job PreparationWe give people who want to work the tools and the confidence to seek, secure and keep a job. Our PIES Program offers free classes where participants learn essential skills for today’s workplace, as well as how to search for a position, create a resume, complete an application and prepare for an interview.

Our Workforce Development Department helps individuals with disabilities and other barriers to employment explore possible careers, prepare for the job market, and find appropriate employment opportunities within their community. This is a referral based program and we work one on one with our consumers.

In addition to providing quality merchandise at affordable prices, our retail stores, donation centers and warehouse provide jobs and on the job training. Many of our employees receive services from Goodwill at some point. We invest revenues generated by our stores and donation operations back into our mission services.

Stories of GoodwillKayla is a freshman at Ohio State University – Marion Campus. For the past two summers she has participated in our Summer Youth Program. Recently she worked at the Municipal Court – Clerk of Courts Office. Through the program she is gaining work experience, developing skills and earning a paycheck.

In the 7 1/2 years that Terry has worked in the Goodwill Retail Store he has seen a lot of donations come through the door (including T-shirts). His passion and knowledge for music and books has enabled him to excel in the store’s media section. Terry takes great pride in his job and in being an employee of Marion Goodwill.

Nicole was unemployed prior to successfully completing the PIES (Preparing Individuals for Employment Success) Program. This free class assisted her with her job search and employability skills, including gaining the confidence she needed with interviewing, which helped her land full time employment. She now feels she has the assurance to succeed.

Austin is a 16 year old high school student. He participated in our Summer Youth Program for the first time. The program allowed Austin to develop skills, gain work experience and earn money. Proving … It’s never too early to learn about the power of work!

Through our Housing Program, David is able to lease one of our accessible apartments. The units are designed for persons with physical disabilities by providing lowered sinks and countertops, accessible appliances, easy roll-in-showers, and accessible parking.

Repurpose With A PurposeAt Marion Goodwill, we’re committed to repurposing with a purpose. We use donations of your stuff (like T-shirts) to help individuals with barriers to employment. Together, we give goods and people new life. This year we brought new life and new purpose to some buildings in the communities we serve.

We purchased an old bank that sat empty for about three years, in a distressed neighborhood, and repurposed it into the Goodwill Education & Training Center. Marion Technical College offers GED testing through their ABLE program at this location while we offer classes that prepare individuals for employment success.

We purchased another building in the same area and repurposed it into offices and additional warehouse space.

Three donated houses were repurposed into low-income homes for our Housing Program and a drycleaners was repurposed into the Olentangy Attended Donation Center. All of the building projects were specifically tailored to meet the needs of the local community and to fulfill Goodwill’s purpose.

Dear Friends,Our business still begins with your donations and ends with our mission to support individuals with barriers to employment find and keep jobs. You donate a T-shirt. T-shirts are practical, they are universal in their appeal, and they are one of the most common items donated to our goodwill locations. It’s amazing to watch all those donated T-shirts (or sweaters, or coffee pots, or basketballs) change a life. An unemployed adult develops new skills that lead to a job. A teenager learns about the power of work through our youth program. The more you donate the healthier and productive the communities we serve can be. As we maintain our focus on our mission, we continue to seek ways to be more efficient, to serve more people and to make an even bigger impact in the communities we serve.

On behalf of all of us at your Goodwill, thank you for your support. Your donations and purchases in our stores drive our ability to help so many of our neighbors.
