How high have you seen ping pong balls fly? Grab your frenemy and volunteer, if you dare, for the Chain of Pain! See how shocking science can be. Shows last approximately 20 thrilling minutes and accommodate about 100 brave visitors. Whatever you do ... Don’t Try is at Home! JUNE 1—Senior Monday Lecture: Dr. Kimberly Cooper on What Can Evolution in Rodents Tell Us About Human Limb Development and Musculoskeletal Disease? �e three-toed jerboa is a bipedal rodent with “normal” arms and extraordinarily long legs. Dr. Cooper will talk about the specialized features of the jerboa, the strengths of mouse genetic engineering and the close evolutionary relationship of the two to help understand the mechanisms that shape limb form and function and provide insight into the mechanisms that generate diversity and the fundamental causes of musculoskeletal disease and birth defects. Following the lecture, catch a special screening of the IMAX film A�ica: �e Serengeti. �e first Monday of the month, seniors 65+ enjoy the Science Center at a discount! 10:30 AM lecture; noon theater show; seniors $8, adults $17.95.

JUNE—Tinkerers’ Club. Join us on Saturday mornings to learn new skills and work on fun projects that you get to take home with you. Advance registration is recommended. $12 members; $15 nonmembers (per project). 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Tinkering Studio. June 6, 13, 20 & 27.

Take a piece of the circus home with you, by designing your very own marione�e using recycled materials, PVC and wood, and using basic tool skills to bring your marione�e to life.

JUNE 9—Teacher Workshop: Spotlight on San Diego Science. A local scientist, engineer or researcher will share their passion for what they do and provide information that will be useful for teachers in the classroom. �is month's Spotlight on San Diego Science teacher workshop features Dr. Jeremy Long, who promotes awareness about the e�ect humans have on marine ecosystems. �is special hip-hop in�uenced presentation is geared for teachers but any interested community members ages 18 & older are welcome to a�end. Registration is required. 5–7 p.m.

JUNE 10—Suds & Science: Can Desalination be California’s Drought Solution? Get the facts on desalination, how it works and if the bene�ts outweigh the costs from Dr. Dan Cartamil from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. JUNE 13—Saturday Science Club for Girls: Circus! Explore the Fleet’s latest interactive exhibition—CIRCUS! Science Under the Big Top. Learn the science secrets that circus acrobats and performers use to wow their audience! Girls in grades 5–8 can join the Fleet on the second Saturday of each month to investigate exciting science topics. Noon–2 p.m.; members $12, nonmembers $14. JUNE 27—DNA Day with the Salk Institute: DNA Extraction. Get up close and personal with the polymers that are the blueprint of life. Join the Salk Institute to extract DNA from a cell and �nd out what color DNA really is. Recommended ages 7 and up. Activities free with paid admission. Noon–3 p.m.
