Don’t miss the seven week sermon series starting on Sunday, June 10 entitled: “The Prodigal God.” We will explore Jesus’ best
known and least understood parable: The Parable of the Prodigal Son. We will gain new insight into the irreligious younger son, the moralistic elder son and the father who lavishes his love on both. The series will challenge the
devout and skeptic alike to see Christianity in a whole new way.
Welcome New Members!
This month Maria and Ray Hodges joined East Lake UMC after completing
the Compass class! They are excited about becoming part of the church
family and are looking forward to being in fellowship with you as they Offer
Christ, Grow in Faith and Serve Others. Please welcome them as they
become part of our community of faith.

Financial Report By The Finance Team
2012 BUDGET UPDATE You likely have seen in the weekly email blast called, Coming Up at East Lake, that your church continues to lack the funds to meet the 2012 budget which was approved in December. Everyone is working hard to keep our spending in line with the income that the church receives each week. The church council in April asked the Finance Team to recommend an adjusted budget for the year which reflects the reduced giving we have experienced yet supports the important ministries of our church. The Finance Team took an adjusted budget to church council that reflects what we believe this church is willing to support. The adjusted budget was approved by Church Council at its May 21 meeting. MEASURES TAKEN TO MANAGE FINANCES As was reported in above, we continued to ask the staff to be as judicious as possible with spending. We are keeping the air conditioning and lights on in all buildings, paying our staff, and paying contractual obligations. Since February, we are paying only that part of Apportionments which will be carried over from year-to-year if not paid. This includes the Episcopal Fund and Clergy Support Fund. As was reported in the March 2012 newsletter, in 2007 in addition to paying the apportionments, ELUMC started a program called the Tithe Fund. Our vision was to use 90% of congregational giving to church operations (including apportionments) and use the other “10% tithe” for UM special collections (i.e. Children’s Home), disaster relief, and to relieve suffering of others around us. The stewardship message was that if everyone would pledge a little more, we could give freely to others, have no special offerings and really make a big difference in the world around us. The vision and reality never matched. Yet we continued on a journey in faith that we could meet that vision.
Operational spending over income resulted on an annual basis. While for many the Tithe Fund has been a source of pride,
giving has never supported this vision. During the budget re-evaluation, the Finance Team has with great sadness
recommended that the Tithe Fund be eliminated for the foreseeable future.
"Long life to you! Good health to you and your household! And good health to all that is yours!" 1 Samuel 25:6 NIV Men can live healthier, longer lives just by knowing their health threats and how to work through these risks. Statistics show that heart disease is the number one threat with cancer, injuries, stroke, COPD (respiratory disease), diabetes, flu, suicide, kidney disease, and Alzheimer's disease, making up the top ten. By listening to your body and adopting good lifestyle habits, you can decrease your risk for life threatening health issues. A healthy, balanced diet will greatly reduce the risk for five of the top ten threats: heart disease, cancer, stroke, diabetes and kidney disease. Fruits, vegetables, and whole grains are heart healthy selections and can fight some cancers as well. They also help maintain a healthy weight which is necessary for the prevention of diabetes and kidney failure which is a complication of diabetes and high blood pressure. Risky behavior can cut a man's life short and is easily preventable. Accidents from automobiles, falls, and the use of chemicals can be fatal or seriously debilitating so wear seat belts, drive safely, use chemicals in a well-ventilated area, and use ladders carefully. Also lose the smoking habit as it increases your risk of heart disease, cancer, and complications with respiratory disease and diabetes. The three remaining health threats: flu, suicide, and Alzheimer's disease can be decreased by being proactive, eating right, and avoiding risky behavior. Exercise, get an annual flu shot, don't smoke, and eat a healthy diet to prevent illness and stimulate your brain. Avoid falls which have an apparent link to Alzheimer’s disease and avoid addictions to prevent suicides and self harm. Know your body, listen to its needs and see your physician when things do not seem right. Your families want a future with you so look at your life and see what can be changed. A simple adjustment can give you better health and a longer life. (Source: National Library of Medicine www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/menshealth.html)

Caregiving Ministry By Margie Marks
Caregiving Prayer Blanket Ministry: Jan. 2010- May 2012 ……362 blankets James 2: 26 says: “Just as the body is dead with out breath so is faith dead without good works.” The mission statement of the Caregiving Ministry is “To reach out in loving support to our church family and community in times of crisis and need by giving concrete expression of love and compassion through faith in action as taught by our Lord Jesus Christ“.
The Prayer Blanket Ministry is a wonderful example of our mission statement in action . The blankets are ordered as a gift of love, encouragement & support by members of the church family, community or by the Caregiving Ministry. They are given for various reasons such as grief, illness, birthdays, births, etc. Caregiving in addition to all those ordered, has given blankets to the families of fallen police officers, children fighting cancer, a three year old in Largo who came down with Spinal meningitis, a pastor in Oldsmar fighting breast cancer, the families of those lost in a mining collapse in Utah, a young man from Safety Harbor who was a victim of a hit and run, the Palm
Harbor high school teacher whose daughter was killed in an auto accident to name a few. Blankets have been ordered from Montana, Ohio, Illinois and California and most recently a blanket was ordered by the Sarah circle and given to Melissa Dohme pictured here, whose boyfriend stabbed her thirty-two times. I have witnessed first hand what the receiving of one of these blankets means to the person receiving it. My mother was given one which covered daily per her request as she waited to be taken to her heavenly home and she never let go of the holding cross that came with the blanket. She was buried with both, the cross in her hand just as she held it during her final days also per her request. The following thank you was recently received: Thank you for the beautiful prayer blanket. Leslie Devitz brought it to us and we had it on his bed the last two weeks, while he was in Hospice Care. Joe passed away on March 6. I know he was comforted not only by your special blanket, but all your prayers. Love, The family of Joe Billek Since we began keeping track of the orders in January of 2010, the Caregiving Prayer Blanket Ministry has made three-hundred and sixty-two blankets. These blankets are made by Tena Donahey, the Holding Crosses that are placed in with blankets are made by the ToyMakers and the personalized cards are made by Margie Marks. A huge thank you to Tena and to our ToyMakers.
Help Needed East Lake UMC has a team of volunteers who share communion with those unable to attend church. More volunteers are needed for this team. If you have an automobile and can spend a couple of hours on the first Sunday of each month going to area homes or nursing facilities to serve communion, you will be a great blessing to our Caregiving Ministry. For more information, please contact Margie Marks (727-786-0005) or Nancy Leewe (727-786-9154). Thank you so much!

Lead the Pack A Sack Project for
ELUMC
For the last couple of years we
supported children who might otherwise
not have enough to eat during the
weekend through a United Methodist
Cooperative Ministries (UMCM) program
called Pack a Sack. These children are
enrolled in the school breakfast and
lunch programs. but their families do not
have sufficient monies to keep their
children from being hungry on the
weekends. We hope to restart at the
beginning of next school year. We are in
need of a volunteer or two to coordinate
this program for our church. The
coordinator(s) would work with UMCM
staff and then arrange for volunteers
from ELUMC to provide the
non-perishable food items (fruit cups,
snack crackers, granola bars, etc.) to be
delivered to our assigned school each
week. Please contact Lynn Bianco
(727-935-5703 or
[email protected]) or Annie
