The Ohio Aeronautics Campus & The Ohio State University Airport

Strategic Plan and Facilities Development Program Executive Summary

Ohio Aeronautics Campus The Ohio Aeronautics Campus is the primary teaching and research laboratory for the Center for Aviation Studies, and home to the nation’s leading university-owned and operated airport at The Ohio State University. The campus serves to enhance Ohio State’s core academic mission through hands-on learning, interdisciplinary research and discovery, community outreach, and economic development in fields related to aviation.

Strategic Initiatives - Preparing students to manage the fbo at a local, general aviation airport through the airport management co-op program, a real-world, hands-on experience. - Advancing aviation research, such as the study of environmentally safe aircraft de-icing at smaller, general aviation airports. - Serving as the permanent home of the national intercollegiate flying association’s safecon national collegiate flight competition. - Managing and operating a university air transport service. - Implementing direct bus service between the aeronautics and columbus campuses.

Development Initiatives - A new terminal building and academic center to bring the academic and business functions of the airport together in one central location. - An updated aircraft training fleet of roughly nine new aircraft, including jet aircraft. - The creation of a research and development park on the north side of the airfield. - The acquisition of 145 acres from the board of trustees. - The development of student housing. - A north runway extension to connect local companies with the global marketplace. - The development of hangars on the south side of the airfield to accommodate a waitlist of more than 100 aircraft.

Campus at a Glance • Owned and operated by the ohio state university college of engineering • Four runways and associated facilities • Located on 1,200 acres in northwest columbus, seven miles from main campus. • Eighteen university-owned aircraft, 2 simulators, air navigation systems, and a weather station • 312,000 square feet of office space, classrooms, hangars, and a simulation lab—with an additional 65 acres available for the new offices, r&d center, and hangar space.

A Real World Learning Lab Each semester, nearly 300 students are engaged in learning at the Ohio State University Airport. They study airport management and airport planning, enroll in flight labs or associated ground courses, and participate in professional development courses on the Aeronautics Campus.

A few highlights: • Staff teaches 75 percent of all aviation courses • Home to the university’s flight education program • Provides on-the-job training for future aviation professionals • 1/3 of all airport employees are students • Facilities are used by students in others disciplines, such as Aeronautical Engineering, Geography, City & Regional Planning, and Civil Engineering • Training for Ohio State Public Safety in receiving and protecting dignitaries, and responding to hijackings, drug smuggling, and bomb threats. • Home of the National Intercollegiate Flying Association • Host site of the Safety and Flight Evaluation Conference (SAFECON)

A Runway for Research and Discovery The Ohio State University Airport is more than one of the nation’s premier airfields. It is also a hub for multidisciplinary disciplinary research.

Students in Aeronautical Engineering, Civil Engineering, City & Regional Planning, Industrial Design, Geography, and Chemistry all use the facility to enhance their programs of study.

A recent survey of the College of Engineering Faculty revealed that at least 20 different research projects from various disciplines are currently being conducted on the Aeronautics Campus. This research includes:

• Design of aircraft systems and propulsion at the Aeronautics and Astronautics Research Laboratory and the Gas Turbine Laboratory • Safety Management Systems for Small Commercial Service Airports • Understanding Airspace, Objects, and their effects on Airports • The Economic Impact of Corporate Aviation in the State of Ohio.

Many of the findings associated with these studies are tested at the facility, making the Aeronautics Campus where the theory of the classroom meetsthe practice of the industry.

A Proud Partner in Central Ohio The Ohio Aeronautics Campus is one of Ohio State University’s engaged campuses, and welcomes more than 2,000 Ohio school-aged children each year for community initiatives and partnerships. These include many students from Central Ohio’s at risk populations. In this way, The Ohio State University Airport helps provide a pathway to the American Dream.
