BLUE Beaches The Dominican Republic’s beaches are widely celebrated as being among the world’s best - and for good reason. Here, more than 1,000 miles of sugar-colored sand is gently lapped by warm waters so clear and blue one has to see to believe. Depending on location, the Dominican Republic’s beaches offer a gentle lullaby for an ocean side nap or enough wind to keep a Technicolor kiteboard adrift.

10 11

Fishing The Dominican Republic hosts several international billfish tournaments each year. For those who are not looking to become legendary anglers but would like to fight a marlin or reel-in a toothy barracuda, several charters are available throughout the country. Not as popular among tourists, but still a thrilling activity is freshwater lake fishing. In a country known for its ocean waters, the Dominican Republic also offers excellent fishing in crystal-clear mountain streams and rivers. One of the best locations is Lake Hatillo, near the remote town of Cotui. The lake is actually an attractive reservoir that holds large quantities of lake bass.

Wind Sports The Dominican Republic is known as the “kiteboarding capital

of the world” among those who travel the water sport’s circuit.

The city of Cabarete offers the perfect blend of wind, water

and waves to create incomparable kiteboarding conditions.

Windsurfers also flock to the water, coming out in large numbers

for the annual World Cup Windsurfing Competition held in

Cabarete every July. But, these are not the only boards to be

found in the Dominican Republic. Surf boards also hit the

waves in search of the perfect point break and to ride on the

barrels.

Kiteboarding

One of the fastest-growing water sports, this surfing-like activity

uses a huge kite to capture the wind as participants balance

on a board. Kiteboarding rentals are available all along Kite

Beach in Cabarete. Visitors looking to try the sport can easily

find experienced kiteboarders offering instruction.

Windsurfing

Equipment is available for rental through most hotels in the

area and lessons can be taken through a variety of vendors.

Scuba/Snorkeling The Dominican Republic’s underwater world offers

exceptional reef diving and snorkeling, incredibly clear

waters and a variety of colorful marine life. In fact, the

country is often listed as one of the top diving locations in

the Caribbean. Visitors have the opportunity to explore

centuries-old shipwrecks.

Marinas The Dominican Republic has one of the most expansive coastlines in the Caribbean with more than 800 miles (1,287 kilometers) of diverse ecological environments ranging from desert to tropical rainforest. Regardless of where visitors choose to drop anchor, grand mountain backdrops, white sand beaches and turquoise-blue waters are sure to meet them.

GREEN Golf A favorite golfing destination of former Presidents Bill Clinton and George H. W. Bush, the Dominican Republic has become one of the hottest spots to tee-off in the Caribbean, if not the world. Here golfers will find more than 20 golf courses, most of them with oceanfront fairways and swaying coconut palms. They will also find courses designed by legends such as Pete Dye, P.B. Dye, Jack Nicklaus, Robert Trent Jones, Gary Player, Tom Fazio and Nick Faldo. Visitors to the Dominican Republic needn’t worry about packing golf clubs or even knowing how to golf, for that matter. Each course offers affordable club rentals and internationally

Eco Adventure The Dominican Republic is one of the few countries in the Caribbean with nine life zones, or ecological zones. This diversity plays a major role in making eco and adventure tourism in the country so remarkable and exciting. The Dominican Republic has the highest and lowest sea level points in the Caribbean with Pico Duarte at 10,128 feet (3,087 meters) above and Lake Enriquillo at 144 feet below (43.89 meters). In between these elevations is a playground of environments from tropical rainforest to arid desert. These areas are matched with adventures and activities designed to get adrenaline rushing, hearts racing and senses bursting. There are several professional tour companies that offer a variety of activities in the Dominican Republic. The following activities are what the Dominican Republic offers for getting in-touch with primal instincts:Bird-watching

The Dominican Republic is a haven for birdwatchers with over 300 species of brightly colored birds that call the island home either permanently or as a migration layover. Twenty-seven species are endemic, meaning only found on the island of Hispaniola.Canyoning and Cascading

Canyoning is a blend of hiking, swimming, rock climbing, jumping and repelling and typically ends with a dip in a cool mountain pool. The Dominican Republic serves as an excellent arena for this relatively new adventure sport due to its multitude of mountain ranges. Adventure seekers staying on the north coast can easily find a tour or guide out of Cabarete, but the most popular access point is Jarabacoa in the central region. Cascading is a variation of canyoning that uses less equipment and involves waterfalls. It requires the partaker to climb one or more waterfalls in order to “cascade” back down by jumping off cliffs or sliding down water shuts. The Salto de

Jimenoa waterfall is a recommended spot, as is the pinnacle cascading course of Damajagua near Puerto Plata. While the Dominican Republic’s series of falls has more than 27 cascades each with a pool, only the first 12 have been approved by the government for exploring. By combining the rushing water of these 12, the right equipment and knowledgeable guides, this adventure is unforgettable. Water shoes are required and are available at the falls for rent. Hiking

Abundant trails line the countryside of the Dominican Republic with the most famous leading to Pico Duarte. Most paths are located within the national parks system and require permits from the government in order to be explored. Some trails also request that a certified guide accompany hikers. (Guides can often be secured near the entrances of the national parks.)

Horseback Riding

Many tours include horseback riding as the means of transportation to various points of interest. Several companies have one-day tours using the strong Creole mountain breed of horse that will take riders over the mountains, through rivers and will stop along the way for waterfall and cave exploration. Kayaking

Like whitewater rafting, kayaking is most popular in the central region along the Yaque del Norte and Jimenoa rivers near Jarabacoa. Both waterways provide a mix of white water with sharp turns and precipitous drops. Mountain Biking

Mountain biking is one of the quietest and most exhilarating ways to see the Dominican Republic. The bikes allow tourists to reach places not accessible to most visitors. Rock Climbing

The Dominican Republic is considered to be one of the world’s best rocking destinations among those who know the rope. With four mountain ranges, the country provides a great landscape for adrenaline. One of the best spots is Playa El Fronton, which is easily accessible by boat from Las Galeras in the North East in Samaná. Climbers hire a boat that takes them to a drop-off point and waits until their return. Whale Watching

From January through March, Samaná Bay is nearly taken over by humpback whales. For centuries, thousands of these humongous mammals make an annual trip to spend winter in the warm waters of the Dominican Republic. Tours from Samaná Bay are available during this time and most offer a 99 percent sighting rate. The Dominican Republic’s preserves and sanctuaries, like the Sanctuary for the Marine Mammals of the Dominican Republic, the first whale sanctuary in the world located along the coast of Samaná, are a vital tourism draw to the Dominican Republic’s fabled lush green surroundings.

Caving

There are hundreds of caves spread throughout the Dominican Republic, the majority of which are located in the country’s numerous national parks. The most visited are: Los Tres Ojos cave in Santo Domingo, Las Cuevas del Pomier, Fun Fun Cave and la Cueva de Las Maravillas. A new path is developing in the East National Park in Bayahibe called Padre Nuestro route, where scuba diving is also allowed at the cave.Whitewater Rafting

The hottest whitewater rafting location is on the Yaque del Norte in the central mountain area. This is the largest river in the Dominican Republic and has exhilarating class III to V rapids (using the universal scale of I to VI) including a 12-foot drop named “Mike Tyson.” For a whitewater experience, Rancho Baiguate and Rancho Jarabacoa, as well as several operators, offer one-day tours out of Santo Domingo, Puerto Plata and Cabarete and all include instruction and equipment. Most tours will only allow adults and children over 12 years of age who are in good health.

Tours are out of Samana, Punta Cana, Puerto Plata, La Romana and Bayahibe and often include horseback riding as an option.Waterfalls

For detailed information visit: www.GoDominicanRepublic.comThe honeymoon

One of the big advantages of marrying at a resort is that you can honeymoon right there. If you will be at a resort in the South, take time out to visit Santo Domingo, the first city in the New World. Have pictures of the two of you strolling through the 16th century Colonial City, an area dripping with romance. Visit the Alcazar where Diego Columbus courted his newly arrived bride, Maria de Toledo. The cobble-stone streets and yellow lamplight will inspire old-fashioned romance. In Santo Domingo, choose from one of the large chain hotels or a smaller colonial city hotel. Enjoy the Plaza de España in the Colonial Zone or the discos in city hotels or residential areas, as well as the many gourmet restaurants, cafes and bars. For serenity-seeking honeymooners, choose a small private hotel far away from the all-inclusive party atmosphere. How about a small mountain enclave in Jarabacoa, a guest house in Playa Grande or Las Galeras beach, Samana? Still stumped about which direction to take? Then make it a split decision - spend a week in the South or the East and a week in the North. Some destinations are only 3 or 4 hours apart so you won’t waste a whole day travelling. After all, it’s your honeymoon; make it memorable!

Religious Ceremonies

For those who like the idea of getting married in a tropical setting but still want a religious ceremony, it is possible to arrange a church wedding in the Dominican Republic. Since a church wedding needs more formalities than a civil service, the bride and groom must go slightly beyond the civil wedding requirements. Many hotels have experience with church weddings but a Dominican wedding specialist will be able to better assist the couple through the formalities.Ceremonies can be held at:

RED Nightlife/Dining From saucy nightclubs to enticing restaurants, there are no shortages of activities to fill the evening hours in the Dominican Republic. The only challenge is finding the time to squeeze it all in. After a day of sun tanning or sight-seeing, visitors can recharge by dining at the unique restaurants that sprinkle the cities and villages from coast-to-coast. Culinary specialties of the country vary from region to region, but the simple tastes and staple foods are sure to please even the most finicky

eater. Inspiration for Dominican cuisine stems from native Antillean and hearty Creole recipes and is prepared similar to the dishes of Central and South America with rice and beans, plantains, fish and other seafood, meats and vegetables. Light spices or coconut add depth and warm the soul. The island is also known for its vibrant nightlife, characterized by the pulsing music beats that fill the air. Carnaval

La Vega – Central Region of the Dominican Republic A quiet town with a rich history, La Vega was also blessed with fertile soil and precious gold. It is fairly quaint, with 385,000 inhabitants. However, when February rolls around, the city is anything but quiet and reserved. La Vega is the home of Carnaval, one of the oldest and most vibrant of Dominican traditions. With the colorful yet devilish masks worn and created by attendees, the Dominicans get rowdy and celebrate the victory of good over evil. A matchless celebration, both natives and non-residents freely dance through the streets to blaring, energetic music while sampling the finest food and drink the Dominican Republic has to offer. Carnaval is also celebrated in other cities like Santo Domingo and Santiago. Casinos

After a full day of sun, sand and surf, visitors to the Dominican Republic can spend the evening hours trying their luck at any of the island’s casinos. Colorful flashing lights, friendly card dealers and the sounds of winning cheers and falling coins are sure to draw even the novice gambler to a blackjack table or slot machine. Most casinos are conveniently located within major resort complexes and are open until dawn, if not 24 hours. Dominican casinos use Las Vegas odds, so the casino’s profits and player winnings are relatively the same and considered fair.

Merengue

A way of life on the island, Dominicans view dancing as an art and take pride in teaching their native movements to others. Salsa, Latin jazz and other types of dance music can be heard in the country, but are not as popular as their beloved merengue counterpart. Merengue is the country’s national dance, traditional merengue groups are comprised of a three-piece band including a melodeon (accordion-like instrument), a guira (a scraped percussion piece) and a tambora (double-headed drum); however, it has expanded to incorporate other instruments such as the saxophone, trumpets, violin, flute and piano. Today, merengue’s lyrics cover general topics including politics and current events. The music has become so popular, in fact, that it is honored with two regional festivals each year, one in Santo Domingo in the month of July and one in Puerto Plata in September.

AMBER Museums The Dominican Republic has a rich and storied history that traces back to the arrival of the Taino Indians. Following the island’s discovery by Christopher Columbus in 1492, the Republic had epic interaction with the Spanish, French, Haitians and Africans. It’s no wonder, then, how the Dominican Republic came to boast such an impressive collection of personal and cultural relics from centuries past.

Alcázar de Colón

The country has done a magnificent job of maintaining and preserving these artifacts as well as the historical structures in which they’re housed. Visiting the Dominican Republic’s major cities, especially Santo Domingo, tourists can easily become engrossed in the historical legends that accompany some of the oldest museums and archeological sites in the New World. The Dominican Republic also has a unique collection of natural rocks and gems that can only be found on the island. Near Barahona, a turquoise-blue pectolite stone known as larimar has been cultivated from the volcanic rock that once formed the island. The country’s most popular gem, amber, is the result of tree sap that hardened millions of years ago, sometimes capturing small plants, animals and insects inside. These two geological imprints are used in jewelry, sometimes together and other times in single pieces. The country’s museums and archeological sites intrigue adults and provide a historical lesson for children. From jewelry to religious artifacts, castles to caves, each venue showcases a vastly different aspect of the island’s colorful heritage.
