JosephWhite, Oxford, 1800, text in Latin and Arabic, subscribers list atfront, contemporary mottled calf gilt, a little rubbed and scuffed, 4toEarly work on Egyptology by Abd al-Latif (1162-1231) which describesmonuments as well as a famine caused when Nile failed to flood, whilst theauthor was in Egypt, resulting in many corpses which Abd al-Latif examined(an early post mortem account). Shipley studied at Christs College,Cambridge, and stayed there for much of his life, being elected a fellow in1887, and master of the college in 1910. Principally specialising in parasitologyand morphology, his large academic output included many publications oninvertebrates, but also literary offerings of a more popular bent.
