Domestic Policies & Issues
Homestead Act Passed in 1862, it gave 160 acres
of public land to any settler who would farm the land for five years.
The settler would only have to pay a $25 registration fee.
Black Codes State laws that regulated the lives
of former slaves. They made it illegal for freed men
to hold public office, to travel freely or to serve on juries.
Reconstruction The Period 1867-1877 when the
federal government, through its military or local Republican gov’t , ruled former Confederate states.
Period of rebuilding in the South after the Civil War
Jim Crow Laws Regulations which enforced
segregation after the Civil War by discriminating against black people.
Dawes Act A law passed in 1887 that divided
reservations to give Native Americans their own land to farming.
Attempted to assimilate Native Americans.
Laissez-faire capitalism Used in government and
economics during the late 19th and early 20th centuries to mean a minimum amount of government regulation of business
Sherman Antitrust Act Approved in 1890, this act
prohibited monopolies by declaring illegal combinations of businesses that were “in restraint of trade or commerce.”
Clayton Antitrust Act Approved in 1914, this Act made
certain business practices illegal, increasing the federal government’s regulatory authority over corporations.
It exempted labor unions and farmer’s organizations from antitrust laws.
“Return to normalcy” President Warren G. Harding’s
term for the return to peace after WWI.
Nativism United States policy which favored
the interests of native born inhabitants over those of immigrants.
Chinese Exclusion Act An act passed in 1882, it excluded
Chinese immigration for 10 years and also excluded criminals, mentally ill, and other persons likely to become a burden to the public.
The Gentlemen’s Agreement Approved in 1907, Japan agreed
not to issue passports for laborers seeking work in U.S. , in exchange for T.R.’s persuasion of San Francisco Board of Ed to put an end to segregating Asian children.
National Origins Act Based on 1890 census Passed in 1924, stronger than
original immigration act of 1921. Congress banned immigration from
East Asia Reduced European immigration
from 3% to 2%.
Prohibition The prevention of the manufacture
of sale of alcoholic beverages in the U.S. after the passage of the 18th Amendment (1919)

Affirmative Action • A policy or a program that seeks to
redress past discrimination through active measures to ensure equal opportunity, as in education and employment.
Americans with Disabilities Act 1990- prohibits discrimination against
the disabled in employment, public accommodations, transportation and telecommunications.
The act guarantees that they be treated equally in the jobs & be given easy access to office buildings, stores, restaurants, stadiums, trains & buses.
Scopes trial of 1925 Scopes brought to trial for teaching
evolution. State law required that the Theory
of Creation be taught.
Dust Bowl 1934, series of droughts in 1930’s
led to dust storm in West. Many farmers left the land.
Internment of Japanese-Americans
After attack on Pearl Harbor, Japanese-Americans were forced to relocate to detention centers.
Supreme Court upheld the law in Korematsu vs U.S. (1944)
Miranda warning 1966- Required police to inform
suspects of constitutional rights to remain silent and have a lawyer present.
Outcome of Miranda v. Arizona
Watergate Scandal (1972-1974) Nixon’s men were caught
breaking into Democratic Party headquarters.
Nixon involved in cover-up. Supreme Court ordered Nixon to turn
over tapes. Led to resignation of Nixon. Lowered confidence of many Americans
in government.
School desegregation 1954- Brown v. Board of Education
declared “Separate but Equal” unconstitutional.
Impeachment of Clinton Charged with perjury and
obstruction of justice. Impeached by House, but
acquitted by Senate.
Manifest Destiny Belief of Americans that it was
their destiny to extend U.S. westward to the Pacific.
U.S. gained Texas (1845). 1890s- it was used to gain colonies
in the Pacific.
Initiative, referendum, recall Progressive reforms which gave
the people more democratic power
Protective tariffs Taxes placed on imported goods in
order to protect domestic industries
Baby boomers People born between 1946-1965,
when there was a dramatic increase in population growth after WWII.
Spoils System The awarding of government jobs
or the granting of favors or advantages by government officials to political supporters and workers.
The term was coined during the administration of Andrew Jackson.
Seneca Falls Convention The 1848 meeting of women and
some men in Seneca Falls, NY, called by Lucretia Mott and Elizabeth Cady Stanton.
It issued a Declaration of Rights and Sentiments and marked the beginning of the women's suffrage movement in America
Title IX Federal law that insists that
women be given the same benefits as men in extra - curricular activities such as sports.

pride in their heritage and creative achievements during the 1920s and 1930s through music, literature, and art.
Bonus Army A group of WWI veterans who
camped out in 1932 in Washington DC to demand early payment of bonuses.
Hoover sent army to clear them out.
